Religion is among the top ten topicssuggested never to discuss withcasual acquaintances, so I had amoment of hesitancy about

adding a “faith” issue to the 2011 editorialcalendar. However, with nine churchesholding weekly services in SiennaPlantation-owned property, and more tocome, clearly, religion is deeply rooted inthe landscape of Sienna Plantation.

The King James Bible, in Hebrews 11:1, states that “faith is the substance ofthings hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” I see the very existence of SiennaPlantation as an act of faith. From my perspective, only faith would emboldendeveloper, Larry Johnson, to buy over 10,000 acres of partially wooded land in theextraterritorial section of Missouri City, believing that one day it would become hometo thousands of residents and commercial establishments.

Over a century earlier, I believe only faith would propel Thomas Howe Scanlanto purchase the land that would eventually become Sienna Plantation, move fromNew York to Houston, believing his new career in the mercantile trade would besuccessful.

I see it as an act of faith when the remaining heirs of the Scanlan family, Lillianand Stella, set up the Scanlan Foundation, believing that beyond the grave their wealthwould help others. The Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence, the first MexicanAmerican order of religious women in the United States, is just one of manyexamples of the fulfillment of their hopes.

Faith is powerful.Faith is transformative. In this month’s cover story, Pastor Charles E Perry, Jr. of Word of Restoration

Christian Fellowship, shares how for Christians, faith is the prescription by which lifeought to be lived.

People of all faiths should mark the 2011 National Day of Prayer (NDP), May 5th,on their calendars. Throughout the country people will gather to pray for our nation.Mary Cook, Fort Bend County’s NDP organizer, working with several area pastorshas secured Sienna Plantation as a prayer site. I’ll share more details next month.

What are you hoping for in 2011? To lose weight? To pay off your mortgage? Torun a marathon? Whatever your desire, to bring it to fruition, unleash your faith.

Until next time,

COMMUNITY PROFILE

The Missionary Catechistsof Divine Providence(MCDP), founded in1946, is the first Mexican

American order of religiouswomen in the United States.Currently, their ministries takethem throughout several statesin the southwestern UnitedStates. They work as hospitalchaplains, Parish Administrators,Clinical Social Workers, SchoolPrincipals, and in DiocesanOffices. It was in the late 1940’s,however, that Father JeanJoseph, an Oblate of MaryImmaculate, working at OurLady of Guadalupe Church inHouston, made the first requestof the Archdiocese of SanAntonio for Catechists to workin and around Houston, Texas.

Since 1911, Father Josephwas in charge of the Catholicsin the surrounding area of theHouse Plantation, the 500-acreproperty owned by the twosurviving Scanlan sisters, Lillianand Stella. (This land would laterbecome Sienna Plantation. For moreinformation on the history of SiennaPlantation, please read the April2010 issue of Sienna PlantationNews. The decade of the ‘50’s wasa time of expansion and growthfor the Missionary Catechists ofDivine Providence. From thevery beginning the Scanlansisters became strong benefactorsof the M.C.D.P sisters. Afterobtaining the necessary per-

mission of His Excellency Christopher Bryne,Bishop of Galveston, Sister Benita Vermeersch, foundress of the MCDPs, took two MCDPSisters to start the catechetical work in andaround House Plantation. The Catechists livedin a small four-room frame cottage about twomiles behind the Scanlan mansion. Everymorning they traveled 17 miles to Sugar Land toattend 7:00 am Mass then teach the children whowere not in school. The requests of so manyyoung ladies to enter the MCDP Society were ananswer to Sister Benita’s prayers. Like the pathshe had chosen for her life, the MCDP sisterswanted to devote their lives to the work ofteaching religion to children not attendingCatholic school.

Of Belgian ancestry, Sister Benita wasorphaned at the age of 12 and educated inMexico by the Sisters of Charity of the

Incarnate Word.Sister Benitia established the MCDP

Motherhouse in San Antonio, TX. The firstbuilding to be constructed at the Motherhousewas the chapel. Built of cream-colored brick, thesimple 290-seat structure was made possiblethrough the generosity of Stella Scanlan. Thededication and blessing of the chapel took placeon September 8, 1949. It was called Stella MarisChapel, in honor of Our Lady, Star of the Sea,and in memory of Stella Scanlan. The ScanlanFoundation was also awarded the BenitiaHumanitarian Award by the MissionaryCatechists of Divine Providence in 2004.■

For I say, through the grace givenunto me, to every man that isamong you, not to think ofhimself more highly than he

ought to think; but to think soberly, ac-cording as God hath dealt to every manthe measure of faith. Romans 12:3.As Christians, we have been

called to live by faith, and faithhas been designed to bring aboutresults in our lives. We have beengiven all things to live a life that ispleasing to God. According tothe scripture above, God hasdealt, allocated or distributed tous the measure of faith. When someonebecomes born again, it is at that momentthat God makes the deposit of faith intotheir heart. NowGod,Whose desire is thatwe please Him, knows that faith is requiredin doing so.

For without faith it is impossible to pleaseHim.Hebrews 11:6.Faith is what God has prescribed for

Christians to live by. The Word of Godsays the just (those who have been declared right-eous through faith in the blood of Jesus) shallLIVE BY FAITH. So then faith is morethan just ameans of getting fromGodwhatwe want, need or desire. Is it incorrect touse faith to receive from God? Absolutelynot! But one is incomplete in their thinkingto believe that’s all there is to faith. When aChristian has the proper understanding offaith, it is then that he or she can experiencethe fullness of life which God has prom-ised and provided for them through JesusChrist.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal (bytaking the Word from you), and to kill (by rob-bing you of life), and to destroy (by keeping youignorant or void of knowledge): Jesus says, I amcome that they might have life, and that theymight have it more abundantly. (in all its full-ness; to the full) John 10:10.

In order to become a partaker of this“God-Kind of Life” one must understandand develop in the “God-Kind of Faith”.The abundant life is available for all ofGod’s children; however, it is accessed andlived through our faith in Him. When youhave a relationship withGod through JesusChrist, faith in the Word of God andknowledge of the covenant of God, thereis nothing that can keep you from living theabundant life.Faith has everything to do with the

Word of God. First, faith comes byhearing, and hearing by the Word of God.Secondly, faith is acting on the Word ofGod. Thirdly, faith is released by speakingGod’s Word out of your mouth. I submitthat faith is important. As Christians, ourvictories in life are connected to our faith.According to I John 5:4, faith is the victorywhereby we overcome the world. I believethe Word of God gives clarity on howsignificant, vital and imperative faith is fortheChristianwhich is why it is referred to inthe bible as beingmore costly than gold thatperish. If youwere to ask the average Christian

whether or not they have faith in God, theanswer would be yes. But faith inGod is totrust God and depend on Him as your

source and only source. God’sgreatest pleasure is to be trusted whileHis worse pain is to be doubted. Faithis necessary in bringing thewill ofGod to pass in your life andthrough it you can changeanything in your life that is not inline with the will of God for yourlife. What Is Faith?Faith is acting on what you

believe. For Christians, since webelieve the Word of God, for us,faith is acting on the Word ofGod.

Faith is confident trust that moves onebeyond believing to acting. Whenever youbelieve God has done something, that be-lief must be backed up with your conductin order for it to be faith.Faith is resting in what God says as

truth.Faith is being confident of what you

hope for and convinced of what you do notsee.Faith is the title, deed and proof that

what’s not perceived with the senses doesexist.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,the evidence of things not seen. For by it the eldersobtained a good report. Hebrews 11:1-2.It doesn’t matter where you are in life,

through your faith you can obtain a goodreport. Out of all the reports youmay havereceived, there is still the report of the Lord. His report says you’re healed. His reportsays you’re free. His report says you’reblessed in the city and in the country. Hisreport says you have peace. His report saysyou have been made the righteousness ofGod. His report says God shall supplyALL your needs according to His riches inglory by Christ Jesus and His report saysyour children are delivered. I could go on

In the spring of 2001, Stephaniewas 18, beautiful and finally oldenough for the surgery to repairthe leaky valve in her heart that

had held her back from fullparticipation in activitiesthroughout her childhood. Surgerywas scheduled for after graduationand went perfectly.

Sunday morning, a few daysbefore she was due to go home, whileresting comfortably, Stephaniebecame a “Code Blue” emergency.

The “Code Blue” team gatheredquickly and worked on her.

Her parents prayed and calledtheir church and asked for prayer.

The “Code Blue” team continuedto work for 45 minutes, long past thetime that they would usually continueto work. They finally got a heartbeatbut a cardiac arrest had resulted in amulti-organ shutdown. The heart, liver, kidneys, and brain had all shutdown. The doctors told Stephanie’sfamily they would never have their

People prayed.Stephanie’s condition worsened as her beautiful

fingers and toes turned black with gangrene. Doctorsconsidered amputation.

Again, the Lord's people prayed. The fingers and toes pinked back up again. After three

and a half weeks in a coma, Stephanie woke up legallyblind. She knew her family but had forgotten all the otherthings she had learned in her 18 years of living. As herpeers went off to their first year at college, Stephanie wentto rehab to learn again how to walk, and feed herself, andall the other things she had forgotten.

People prayed.Stephanie regained her sight and the lost information

in her brain. A year later, she entered college, only a yearbehind her peers. She graduated four years later in 2006and married in 2007.

Here are a few examples of those who by their faith broughtabout great results in their lives.

Woman from Canaan…daughter vexed with adevil…great is YOUR FAITH, be it unto thee as thou wilt.

Ten Lepers…have mercy on us. Go show thyself tothe Priest…as they went…go thy way THY FAITH hasmade thee whole.

QMy son is currently receiving private speech andlanguage services twice a week. We get homeworkassignments from his Speech Therapist, but I was

wondering what else I could do at home on a daily basis toincrease his understanding and use of language.

ARead to him daily (e.g. stories, poems, nursery rhymes,etc.).Teach him songs with repetitive words (e.g. Old Mac-Donald had a Farm, Head and Shoulders, This Old Man, etc.)

and have him participate by using gestures and short, repetitive phrases. When you have his attention, give him time to listen and provide sim-ple directions for him to follow. Take advantage of language opportu-nities in everyday events. Talk about what you are doing, what you see,and where you are going. (e.g. We’re buying groceries. I hear a noisycar. Look at the silly dog chasing his tail. We’re going to the playground.)When talking about stories or activities, try to ask detailed questions orask him to predict what will happen next in the story/activity. Incorpo-rate prepositions (e.g. on, under, in, out, beside, etc.) in play time and ac-tivities. You can play with toys by taking them individually out of thebox or clean up by putting all thetoys in the box. Or you can play“Follow the Leader” by crawlingunder the table, hiding betweenthe chairs, sitting on the big chair, etc. Use snack/meal time to in-crease descriptive vocabulary bytalking about how things taste(sweet, sour, salty, etc.), how theyfeel (soft, hard, crunchy, slimy, etc.), what action you use to eat(drink, sip, chew, gobble, etc.)

QMy son is 9 years old and he wants a "six-pack". Is hetoo young to work out with weights?

AUntil recently, children were not recommended to beginweightlifting, a form of resistance training, until they reachedadolescence (age 12 for girls, age 14 for boys.) It is now well ac-

cepted by physicians that pre-adolescent children may start resistancetraining under adult supervision. More important than age is the child’semotional maturity and ability to understand the risks and benefits asso-ciated with this activity. If a child is able to participate in sports, then heor she can begin resistance training. I would encourage parents to allowchildren to participate in supervised strength training at an appropriatelevel for their physical abilities. It is better to underestimate the child’s abil-ities and focus on technique to avoid injury. The potential benefits of re-sistance training extend beyond buildingmuscle or obtaining a “six-pack”as it may increase bone mineral density and improve motor performanceskill to better prepare children for the demands of competitive sports.

QMy son is 18 months old and still not talking.Sometimes we can get a string of “mamamama”,but not where he acknowledges me as “mama”. He

makes noises and grunts, but he doesn’t have any real words. When I ask him questions, he shakes his head “no” to everyquestion and I don’t think he’s responding appropriately. My husband and I try to sing songs and play peek-a-boowith him, but he doesn’t try to imitate sounds or gestureswith me. He had a history of ear infections, but his ears havebeen clear for the past 6 months. I’m worried about hisdevelopment. Should I bring him to see a doctor or specialist?

ABabies typically go through language milestones of re-peating single syllables over and over between 6-8 months(e.g. bababa), using alternating consonants and vowels be-

tween 8-10 months (e.g. babigadadu), using strings of syllablesthat sound like the stress patterns in adult speech between 9-12months, and producing first words at around 12 months. I amconcerned that at 18 months he has not moved out of this stage

of single-syllable babbling. Iam also concerned that he isnot engaging in interactivesongs and games like peek-a-boo. While it is possible that ahistory of ear infections couldinterfere with his speech de-velopment, peek-a-boo is a vi-sually engaging game andshould not interfere with thesetypes of activities. Based onyour observations, I woulddefinitely recommend takingyour son to a speech-languagepathologist for an evaluation.

QHow do I teach my 3-year-old not to interrupt me whileI'm on the phone?

AThis is a common complaint from parents; the moment youpick up the telephone, your 3-year-old magically appears byyour side in dire need of your time and attention. Although,

ideally, he could learn the fine art of leaving-you-alone when you're onthe phone, in reality, the accommodation will have to come from you.A technique that is very effective is utilizing sign language. Teach yourson the sign for “wait” which is wiggling his fingers with his palmfacing up. So, the next time your son interrupts you when you are onan important phone call, instead of the “can't you see I'm on thephone?” speech, show him the sign for wait. This communicates tohim that you have acknowledged his need for something from you,and allows you to carry-on with your conversation without anydisruptions. Using the sign for “wait” is also very effective when youare disciplining one child and another child tries to interrupt you.

scious mind is engaged in your weight loss ef-forts, success is not sustainable over the longterm.

The principles guiding the lessons are four-fold:

Your body itself is neutral. It is an effectnot a cause.

Neither poor diet nor lack of exercise is thecause of your excess weight.

The cause of your excess weight is fear, which is a place where love is blocked.

Fear expresses itself as subconscious urges, which then express themselves as either ex-cessive, and/or unhealthy eating habits and/orresistance to proper exercise.

Through lessons learned in the course, fearcomes to be replaced with love, and your bodylets go of excess pounds.

Sienna Plantation is a 2011National Day of Prayer Site

Since 2004, Mary Cook has worked to co-ordinate National Day of Prayer (NDP) eventsaround Fort Bend County. Local observancesstarted with six people and have grown tonearly a thousand individuals in locationsthroughout the county. A devoted Christianwho gave her life to Jesus Christ in 1985, Cookhas added Sienna Plantation to the 2011 list ofFort Bend County prayer sites.

The 60th Annual National Day of Prayerwill take place Thursday, May 5, 2011. Thetheme, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”, isbased on the verse from Psalm 91:2 which

states: “I will say to the Lord, my refuge and my fortress, my God inwhom I trust.” ■For more information or to offer support, contact Mary Cook at: (832)651-7771 or [email protected].

2011 National Prayerby Joni Eareckson Tada,

Honorary Chairman

Almighty God, you are our Mighty Fortress, ourrefuge and the God in whom we place our trust. Asour nation faces great distress and uncertainty, we askyour Holy Spirit to fall afresh upon your people —convict us of sin and inflame within us a passion topray for our land and its people. Grant the leaders ofour country an awareness of their desperate need ofwisdom and salvation in You until sin becomes a re-proach to all and righteousness exalts this nation.

Protect and defend us against our enemies andmay the cause of Christ always prevail in our schools, courts, homes, and churches. Lord God, send aspirit of revival and may it begin in our own hearts.

Remember America, we pray. Remember thefoundations on which this country was built. Re-member the prayers of our nation’s fathers andmothers, and do not forget us in our time of need.

In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen. ■

can get results in your life and situa-tion by faith. If the Word of God istrue and it is, and if it was written togive us hope or expectation then ac-

cording to your faith you can behealed, get out of debt, get that pro-motion and live victoriously.

Although we walk by faith and

not by sight, faith is not living life blind. Faith is walk-ing by the Word of God, therefore the Word of Godis the eyes of faith. To walk by sight is simply walkingby what is perceived by the senses. The reason so manyChristians struggle to live a lifestyle of faith is becauseto walk by faith, one must leave the sense realm.

While we look not at the things which are seen (perceived withthe senses), but at the things which are not seen: for the things whichare seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eter-nal. II Corinthians 4:18.

If you are a Christian, you are under direct orderfrom God not to look at things which are seen but atthe things which are not seen. It’s easy not to look atsomething that is seen but how do you look at some-thing that is not seen. There are things that exist but arenot visible to the physical eye however they can be seenthrough a telescope. There are other things that existand are visible only to the physical eye through a mi-croscope. Likewise, for the Christian, the promises ofGod exist and many times they may not be visible to thephysical eye but they can be seen through the Word ofGod.

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst ofthine heart. Proverbs 4:20-21.

Many fail because they allow the Word of God todepart from before their eyes. Instead of seeing them-selves as God’s Word says they are, they keep looking atthe wrong things – at the conditions, at the symptoms,at themselves –so they walk in unbelief and destroy theeffects of their faith. Many even listen to others aroundthem instead of listening to God’s Word, and they allowthe Word to depart out of their heart.

You must determine to walk in the light of God’sWord. Once you’ve settled in your heart that you’regoing to follow God’s Word rather than your senses, you must continue to feed upon it until you have a set-tled assurance of God’s will concerning your life andcircumstances. You must immerse yourself in the Wordof God until it becomes a part of you and is more realthan what you perceive with your senses. As a Christianwho walks by faith, the Word of God must have firstplace and be the final authority in your life.

Settle the Word of God in your heart and get yourmind on the answer and then you will see yourself ashaving received what God has promised you. Say whatGod says and keep walking by faith. ■
