The annual MSO Sidney Myer Free Concerts are a long standing gift of the Myer family and an iconic event in our city.

Each year our MSO takes its talents outdoors to the stunning Sidney Myer Music Bowl to share a series of concerts featuring acclaimed Australian and international conductors and performers.

This years program will take audiences on a journey across the ages and around the globe from the works of Tchaikovsky and Gershwin, to the sounds of Spain and South America.

The second concert coincides with White Night Melbourne, an all-night creative celebration of the city. What better way to start your exploration than with glorious music under the stars by the MSO.

The concerts herald the MSOs new season and the wonderful program of music that it will perform in 2016.

Whether you are a regular or a first-timer, pack a picnic, gather with friends and family and enjoy a quintessential slice of Melbournes summer at the 2016 MSO Sidney Myer Free Concerts.

Martin Foley MP Minister for Creative Industries

    WELCOME

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the Land on which we perform The Kulin Nation and would like to pay our respects to their Elders and Community both past and present.

The Sidney Myer Free concerts are an annual tradition for Melbourne and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Every February, thousands of music-lovers gather to watch some of the finest Australian and international conductors and soloists perform with our orchestra, against the beautiful backdrop of sunset at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

This year is no different. We are delighted to welcome American conductor Joshua Weilerstein to conduct the first two concerts in his MSO debut. For the first, Dvok Under The Stars, he is joined by Melbourne local, pianist Stefan Cassomenos who performs Gershwins American classic: Piano Concerto in F. Joshuas second concert, Summer Carnival, features Barbers Violin Concerto performed by our very own MSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop. This program also includes works by Dvok and Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 5.

The final concert of the series is The Tang of the Tango, conducted by one of our finest local talents, MSO Associate Conductor Benjamin Northey. He is joined by the brothers Grigoryan Slava and Leonard in a Spanish-South American program that is the perfect way to end our summer concerts at the Bowl for 2016.

We hope you enjoy these performances and that you will join us again throughout the year.

    Michael Ullmer Chairman

On behalf of the Trustees of the Estate of Sidney Myer, and all the members of the Myer Family, welcome to the 2016 Sidney Myer Free Concerts.

Sidney Myer died over eighty years ago, but his legacy lives on in the Sidney Myer Fund, the many business interests of the Myer Family, and the business and philanthropic activities of a very large family. His story mirrors the early development of Victoria: migrants entering the country in search of opportunity and a better life; the commitment to hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit; a passion for innovation as seen in the groundbreaking retailing strategies developed in the early years of Myer Stores.

The Bowl has woven its way into the life of Victoria and is registered on the Victorian Heritage List for its cultural importance and architectural significance as the largest purpose built permanent outdoor venue in Australia.

For Sidney Myer, the reward was in the giving. I hope you enjoy the 2016 Sidney Myer Free Concerts and know of the pleasure that he would have in seeing these concerts bring such joy to all who attend.

The people of Victoria are truly indebted to the foresight of Sidney Myer and the ongoing support of the Myer Family and the Victorian Government for this iconic place of adventure. 2016 marks the 57th year of the three-way partnership which produces magnificent free outdoor concerts each year. Interestingly, the deed which established the Trust in 1937 noted that while Sidney Myer would prefer outdoor concerts, there was at that time no suitable venue, and Outdoor concerts in Melbourne might be possible if a proper shell were built, of the Hollywood type...

That shell came to life in 1959, and, thanks to the generosity of Sidney Myer and under the aegis of the University of Melbourne, the MSO has been able to provide wonderful music each year since then for the

enjoyment of music lovers of all ages. Since the era of the FJ Holden, the billy-cart, the Hills Hoist and The Everly Brothers, highlights have been many and varied. These include the opening in 1959 by then Prime Minister Robert Menzies, through the 1967 appearance of The Seekers supported by players from the MSO, in front of a then record crowd of 200,000 10% of Melbournes population to the marvelous MSO and John Farnham concerts in 1989.

In our 2016 series we present a varied mix of music from across three centuries and four continents, and showcase some brilliant home grown talent. We hope you will remember Sidney and enjoy another marvelous concert under the stars in this unique shrine to music.

A GIFT TO MELBOURNE THE SIDNEY MYER MUSIC BOWL

Thanks to our wonderful MSO Supporters.

Ticket sales account for only 33% of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestras revenue. The Orchestra is deeply appreciative of the support it receives from Federal, State and Local government funders, corporate partners, individual donors and trusts and foundations.
