Page 2: SIDE EVENT INTERPOL-UNODC

Over the past few years, INTERPOL and UNODC have been promoting a model of coordination between law enforcement agencies and specialized prosecutors to combat the smuggling of migrant and trafficking in persons. This cooperation unfolded in the context of INTERPOL-facilitated operations in the Americas, such as Operation Andes and Operation Turquesa, and has led to reinforced operational action between the ISON (the INTERPOL Specialized Operational Network against migrant smuggling), and REDTRAM (the Ibero-American Network of Specialized Prosecutors against trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants). A recent example of this collective and inclusive approach against crime in the Americas is Operation Turquesa II, which resulted in the arrest of 161 suspects and the identification and assistance of 95 victims of human trafficking, thanks to the joint efforts of authorities in 32 countries. In light of UNGA resolution 75/10 (November 2020) on the cooperation between the United Nations and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), this Side Event will aim to present the results of the partnership between both organizations in countering trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, look at synergies within their respective mandates, and discuss ways to take this cooperation forward through structured, long-term initiatives that will promote international cooperation. This event will also represent a unique opportunity for representatives from Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic and Spain to discuss and share experiences, best practices and international strategies to fight the criminal organizations engaged in smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons.
