On March 20, Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana’s staff began working from home to provide the services and support that families dealing with cancer depend upon. Hospital beds still got delivered, nutritional drink and wound care supplies were staged for “contact-less” pick-up. Counselors met with people over Zoom and phone calls. People mailed and faxed their financial needs. It wasn’t easy, but I am so proud of how the Cancer Services team responded. The board and staff all focused on the best ways to safely serve the mission of Cancer Services. Because of their commitment, there were no unmet needs during this time and most programs continued to experience a participation level of 90% of the rate before coronavirus struck. Not having the usual assistance from volunteers remains a monumental challenge. This mission depends on their help (and we really miss seeing their faces). We have begun the process of returning to the office and are hopeful that later this summer the massage therapists will be able to resume the relaxing and healing touch they provide. We know how much our class participants miss tai chi, yoga, meditation and seeing each other. With the guidance of our physician liaison Dr. David Trenkner, we are monitoring the coronavirus statistics and the advice of the CDC. We will continue opening up classes and programs as soon as we know it is safe to do so. In the midst of all this, some good news almost got missed. The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics reported that cancer death rates decreased every year from 1999 to 2018, leading to a 26% drop overall. Lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer death, but those death rates decreased 37%. Death rates also decreased in 15 other common cancers including colorectal, female breast, and prostate. Cancer Services is entirely supported bycharitable contributions. Some support comes from local foundations, but it isthe individual donors who make themost impact - sending regular checks, buying tickets to fundraising events, andwalking to raise money with friends. These gifts come with “no stringsattached,” which means we are able tofund innovative new programming andbalance resources so that people canget what they need when they need it.

When you read this list of amazingdonors and wonder if your gift matters, please know that the organizationwouldn’t exist without it.

MEMORIALS & HONORARIUMS CONTINUED Thanks to all who gave to Cancer Services between 3/1/2020 - 5/25/2020

Remembering Linda Bewley

The Cancer Services family recently lost a colleague and friend. Long-time outreachcoordinator Linda Bewley passed away unexpectedly in April. She retired a littleover a year ago and was promoted to the role of volunteer. She recently helped planCancer Services’ 75th Anniversary celebration and continued to tell people aboutthe organization at health fairs across the region. Linda’s gift of gab and love forpeople made her a fast friend to everyone she met. She always had time to hearsomeone’s story and offer words of encouragement. Her co-workers mourn her lossalongside her husband, son and daughter, their spouses and two grandchildren sheadored. We will miss her passion and spirit of caring with families fighting cancer. We will miss the comradery of being her coworker and friend.

The hallways aren’t the same without you. Cancer Servicesis looking forward to gradually opening our doors to selectclasses and programs in July.

While we haven’t been able to gather in person, I hopeyou felt a part of Cancer Services in spirit. Our staff andfacilitators remain committed to offering online resources toour clients and the greater community.

We developed the Survivor Academy Online – a cache oftai chi, nutrition, yoga and guided mediation videos onCancer Services’ website for you to view at home.

As classes resume, we are keeping everybody’s safety at the forefront.

Beginning July 6, new policies are in place based on CDC guidelines:1. All participants must wear a face mask at all times.2. A temperature check may be required for entry.3. All classes and programs require pre-registration to comply with social distancing guidelines.

The number of attendants for each program will be limited to ensure socialdistancing. Priority for class attendance will be based on:1. Those currently in treatment and their caregiver.2. Those out of treatment and their caregiver.3. Those attending for general health benefits.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate this “new normal.” You can keep updated on class dates and times by visiting www.cancer-services.org.
