Side by side. Every step of the way. CANCER SERVICES OF NORTHEAST INDIANA DECEMBER 2015 VOL 72 ISSUE 4 Baby Ira was just five weeks old when her parents, Alicia and Drew Fackler, received devastating news. “Ira was born healthy,” said Alicia. “But at her five-week checkup Dr. Mary Pat Veerkamp felt something hard in her belly. She told us she wanted an ultrasound ‘just in case.’” It was cancer. A trip to Riley Hospital for Children for a biopsy confirmed it was an inoperable neuroblastoma tumor connected to the abdominal aorta. The only treatment option for their tiny girl was multiple rounds of aggressive chemotherapy and prayers that the tumor would shrink. “I thought we were mentally prepared for it – the chemo,” said Drew. “But when I saw them prepare her for it, that was something that I don’t ever want to have to feel again. My heart hit the floor seeing my baby hooked up to poison.” Cancer upended the busy family’s life as Alicia and Drew struggled to get Ira the medical treatment she needed while still caring for their three older children, Kiersten, 8, Ryan, 7, and Hayden, almost 2. “Aside from the diagnosis itself, that was the hardest part, figuring out how to handle the day-to-day family logistics,” she said. “It is difficult to get up and keep the same routine and make sure all the kids feel just as important – and they are! But I feel myself spread too thin.” To meet the new challenges of taking care of her family, Alicia had to give up a job she loved at Matilda Jane Clothing. Resigning her job meant Alicia could focus more time on caring for her children, but it also meant less money com- ing in at the same time the medical bills began to mount. Alicia called Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana for help. “Everyone has been just wonderful through this whole process, which is great because I felt pretty alone,” said Alicia. “Danielle has been amazing. It’s great to have someone – outside of family – to talk to and I feel like I can talk to her about anything.” Danielle Peterson, the Fackler’s client advocate at Cancer Services, has “My heart hit the floor” Alicia and Baby Ira share a giggle equally glowing things to say about Alicia. “She’s just really good at asking questions, looking at the options, knowing when they needed help and reaching out for it. She is an exemplary parent who is always putting her kids first.” Because of generous donors, Cancer Services is able to help the Fackler family with transportation expenses for the many trips to Riley and financial support to help with the cost of medication for Ira. The whole family also participates in the Kids Surviving Cancer programs, including a Tincaps game in August, Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo day in September and the recent Christmas Party organized by the amazing teachers and students at North Side High School. “All the activities are incredible,” said Alicia. “Because our other kids are invited and included, this is so important because Ira’s illness affects them a lot too. This gives us all a chance to have fun together as a family. It makes them all feel special.” Now, the family is waiting for Ira’s next scans and hoping the tumor remains in check. It will be something they have to watch for the rest of her life. But they have a strong support system and know they will get the help they need because of the many people in our community who care about families facing cancer and generously support Cancer Services. eCareLines facebook.com/CSNI Subscribe to our e-newsletter 6316 Mutual Drive • Fort Wayne, IN 46825 P. 260-484-9560 • Toll Free 866-484-9560 F. 260-484-9572 • www.Cancer-Services.org Connect with us “...seeing my baby hooked up to poison.”

Baby Ira was just five weeks old when her parents, Alicia and DrewFackler, received devastating news.

“Ira was born healthy,” said Alicia. “But at her five-week checkup Dr.Mary Pat Veerkamp felt something hard in her belly. She told us shewanted an ultrasound ‘just in case.’”

It was cancer.A trip to Riley Hospital for Children for a biopsy confirmed it was an

inoperable neuroblastoma tumor connected to the abdominal aorta. Theonly treatment option for their tiny girl was multiple rounds of aggressivechemotherapy and prayers that the tumor would shrink.

“I thought we were mentally prepared for it – the chemo,” said Drew.“But when I saw them prepare her for it, that was something that I don’tever want to have to feel again. My heart hit the floor seeing my babyhooked up to poison.”

Cancer upended the busy family’s life as Alicia and Drew struggled toget Ira the medical treatment she needed while still caring for their threeolder children, Kiersten, 8, Ryan, 7, and Hayden, almost 2.

You know that canceraffects the entire family. For many years, CancerServices has had asuccessful program calledKids Surviving Cancer tohelp families with childrenwho have cancer.

However, there areother children who needhelp too – children with aloved one who has cancer: a parent or a belovedgrandparent.

A cancer diagnosis requires the family to focus on the cancerpatient. Too often, the effects of cancer on children in the family –sadness, fear, grief, stress and anxiety – can be overlooked.

Every day Cancer Services’ client advocates hear from parentswho are concerned about how to explain cancer to their children.Worse yet, they need help telling a child they might lose a lovedone to the disease.

Advocates would help families through these crisis, but there was no program to help families on an ongoing basis.

Recognizing this unmet need in our community, CancerServices researched the issue and developed the Courageous Kidsprogram. It provides children affected by cancer with emotionalsupport, educational tools, and group activities (art and playtherapy, recreational activities and family day camps). Theprogram ensures families are better equipped to deal with theimpact of cancer.

Thanks to your generous support, Cancer Services launchedCourageous Kids in October. This program, coupled with KidsSurviving Cancer, ensures every family touched by cancer receivesthe support they need.

Small But MightySomeone recently said, “Wow, Cancer Services has lots of donors!

The list in your newsletter is huge.” Our response: “Yes, and it takes all of them and more to help nearly

3,000 local cancer patients every year.”We have amazing donors. If we didn’t, all of these families wouldn’t have the

help and support they need. Cancer Services doesn’t receive any state or federal support so your gifts are

essential. The organization is entirely supported by charitable contributions. Some ofthat comes from local foundations. But it is individual donors, like you, who make themost impact. They send regular checks, buy tickets to fundraising events, and walk toraise money with friends.

These gifts, which come with “no strings attached,” mean we are able to fundinnovative new programming and balance resources so people can get what theyneed when they need it.

So the next time you look at the list of amazing donors in Carelines and wonderif your gift matters, please know that the organization would not exist without it.

AAUW Trust shares messages of hope

When a family is touchedby cancer, it is crucial that theyknow they are not alone andthat there is a community ofcaring people who supportthem.

To this end, the womenof the Fort Wayne Division ofthe AAUW Trust generouslyprovided a $3,000 grant toCancer Services. This funding ispaying printing and postage costs for carefully designed cards that share messages of support to clients.

The AAUW grant allows Cancer Services’ client advocates to send birthdaycards to clients and bereavement cards to families after the death of a loved one.

Not only did local AAUW members support this valuable effort financially, AAUWboard member Monette King lent her considerable creative talent to designingthese beautiful cards.

We are grateful for this valuable partnership with the local AAUW Trust.
