Siddhartha

The Brahmin’s Son

• Growing up as a boy, Siddhartha’s mother and father are extremely proud of him.

• Although Siddhartha is handsome, brilliant, and strong, he feels as if there is more knowledge in the world waiting for him.

With the Samana’s

• With his loyal friend at his side, Govinda, Siddhartha seeks the knowledge he has been looking for by living with the Samana’s.

• Siddhartha gives up everything he has been living with his whole life, and he entends to reach Atman.

Gotama

• Once Siddhartha and Govinda hear about “The Illustrious One”, they leave the Samana’s to try to reach enlightment from Gotama.

• Siddhartha feels good about reaching Nirvana through the Buddha because he is the only one who has reached enlightment before.

Awakening

• After Govinda decides to become a follower of the Buddha, Siddhartha is alone on his road to enlightment.

• Siddharhta begins to look at the world in a different way, realizing it was foolish to destroy himself (like he did with the Samana’s).

Kamala

• Siddhartha is in awe of what the world has to offer, and he realizes he has not experienced the art of love.

• Once Siddhartha meets Kamala, she said she would be with him if he had riches, but Siddhartha tells her that he can think, wait, and fast.

Amongst the People

• Kamaswami, a wealthy merchant, is interested in Siddhartha as an assistant.

• Siddhartha tell him he can think, wait, and fast, but Kamaswami thinks all these traits are useless.

• Siddhartha is given food, clothes, and a home to live in while working with Kamaswami.

Samsara

• Siddhartha begins to get caught up in the life of fine living, and he obtains the same luxuries as Kamaswami.

• Although Siddhartha tries to accomplish the art of love,his path to enlightment is on hold.

By the River

• Siddhartha realizes what he has become and nearly commits suicide by drowning himself in the river.

• He begins to get back on his journey when he recalls the word, “Om”.

The Ferryman

• Siddhartha decides to stay by the river, and a ferryman, Vasudeva, agrees to let Siddhartha become his assistant.

• Vasudeva teaches Siddhartha about the many ways of the river, and also teaches that time doesn’t exsist.

The Son

• Kamala is bitten by a snake and passes away. Although Siddhartha mourns her death, he is also happy because she has given him his son.

• Siddhartha tries to raise his son through values and respect, but Young Siddhartha is spoiled, and runs off through the woods one night, to never return.

Om

• Siddhartha feels the longing pain after his son leaves, and he realizes he had done the same thing to his father when he left as a boy.

• Vasudeva and Siddhartha listen to the river closely, and they hear everything come together as one. Siddhartha reaches enlightment.

Govinda

• Govinda has been following the Buddha for many years, and Govinda and Siddhartha encounter each other by the river for the first time in many years.

• Siddhartha treats Govinda as a guest in his hut, and he tells Govinda the unity of all things as they come together in peace.
