M A R V E L at the mosaics of Monreale Cathedral, one of the greatest examples of Norman art and architecture in the world.

When I first visited the remarkable isle of Sicily, I realized that only then could I

call myself a true Italophile! At the crossroads

of Mediterranean trade routes, Sicily has been

occupied for more than two milliennia by waves

of foreign invaders, from the Phoenicians,

Greeks and Romans to the Arabs and Normans.

Each succeeding civilization has left its artistic

and cultural legacy, a confluence of styles and

traditions that we can witness today. Traveling

over land and by sea with our faculty leader

Barbara Pitkin and historian Peter Watson, we

explore the legacy of these past conquerors

while savoring Sicily’s bounty of olive oils, wines

and i dolci during our al fresco picnic lunches.

Buon viaggio!

Arrive at Catania airport on Sunday and transfer to our hotel in the center of Siracusa where we spend our first three nights. This evening, gather at our hotel for a welcome recep-tion. DES ETRANGERS

Admire the wonderful baroque buildings on the tiny offshore island of Ortygia, an-cient Greece’s main settlement in Sicily. Back on the mainland, visit the Greek theater, Roman altar and Orecchio di Dion-ìsio (or “Ear of Dionysus”), a

limestone cave carved out of the hillside and shaped like a human ear. DES ETRANGERS (B,D)

has its own private beach. HOTEL VILLA SANT’ANDREA (B,L,D)

W A L K O P T I O N SIn order for you to fully enjoy this remarkable region of Italy, we’re offering two options for many of the countryside walking days. All walks are led by experienced leaders.Option I is a relatively easy walk of between three and six miles over gentle terrain that allows you time to enjoy the scenery at a more leisurely pace.Option II is a longer, more strenuous walk, or hike, of between five and 12 miles that allows more ad-venturous walkers to explore the higher areas and to see the wilder parts of the countryside. These walking trails can be rugged, rocky and steep, and have altitude gains and/or losses of between 1,000 and 3,000 feet. On some days Option II walkers may be asked to carry their own water, supplies and packed lunch.

W H A T T O E X P E C TWe consider this to be a moderately strenuous and physically demanding program, depending in part on your choice of the two walk options offered on most days. Walks range from approximately three to 12 miles in length. Several of our daily excursions might be considered by some participants to be hikes rather than walks, but we make every effort not to schedule any hikes that are beyond the aver-age ability of our walkers. If you are in good shape and active, you should have no problem keeping up with the group. Walking routes in Sicily are rugged and steep with elevations reaching approximately 3,000 feet. The weather in this region may be overcast at times, and rain showers are a possibil-ity. Sturdy, well-fitting and broken-in hiking shoes with ankle support are essential. To participate fully in this walking tour, you need to be physically fit, agile and used to moderate exercise. All participants must be able to navigate rocky paths without the assistance of handrails or tour staff. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

When asked what she enjoys most about traveling with Stanford, Barbara, who has served as faculty leader on several European Travel/Study programs, replied, “I love the lively conversations I have with fellow walkers about our shared experiences. Preparing for previous trips, I learned so much about the history of places we visited. I enjoy sharing my new passions with Stanford alums and friends.” Barbara’s lectures during this program will focus on antiquity’s rich and shifting religious landscapes in southern Italy; Jewish, Christian and Muslim encounters in the ancient and medieval Mediterranean; and the relationship of religion to art, architecture and commerce in Sicily from pre-Christian times to the present.
