There were the shouldn’t-have-missed short putts, heartbreaking lip-outs, inexplicable stray drives and occasional hostile opponents. But there were also clutch

putts, miraculous chip-ins, intimidating drives, remarkable sand saves and most of all, an incredible team spirit which was infused with a never-say-die fighting attitude throughout the league season. The ladies’ league team shared only one goal - to win the ladies’ Division title. The competition was intense and the pressure unbearable sometimes, and yet as a team, we showed that we had the mental fortitude to play fearless, inspired golf not for ourselves but for the club.

What had started as frustrating first rounds - no thanks to the weather which appeared to have conspired with our opponents - ended with a nail-biting finish with a margin so narrow, we were holding our breaths as we waited for confirmation of our win. We were half a point behind the Keppel ladies who were the leaders after the penultimate round. We knew that to secure an outright win, we needed to win all three matches on our last round and then ride on the condition that the Keppel team lost at least one match. The euphoria which broke out on the 18th green at OCC was in fact premature as the Keppel team’s round against NSRCC was not over. The wait which transpired for almost an hour was agonizing. When news finally confirmed that our nearest rival had only managed to win one match and squared another, we broke out in cheers on a well-deserved, hard-fought victory.

There were four rounds which we could have won, but could only square as they were called off due to inclement weather. But once the course stayed dry, we were a dominating force - with easy victories and some unexpected come-from-behind wins even as there were tight matches that were pushed all the way to the last hole. The final tally - seven wins, four AS and only one loss for a total of 23.5 points - one point ahead of first runner-ups, Keppel.

What was new this year were the round robin matches against all the golf clubs and playing without any stroke allowance. We had to field only our best players who could play off the stick against our opponents. For the A Div, the toughest matches were against the junior national players. For the B Div, they were the veteran players whose games stayed as sharp.

There were new friendships forged within our team and with our opponents - a camaraderie built over a long season. Before and after every round, there were exchange of words of encouragement or congratulatory messages. Then, there were the celebration parties, high-fives, showers of beer on our heads and warm hugs to each other. Even if the season was almost too exhausting - 12 rounds played on alternate Sundays over a period of almost 6 months (there were only 5 rounds previously under the SLGA league), the experience was exhilarating - the overwhelming adrenalin rush, the tears of relief, the chemistry of good partnerships and ultimately, the thrill of the final triumph.

Our league captains, Meg Koh and Margaret De Luna believed in us and we did not want to disappoint them. They were there at every round, delivering not only the much-needed words of encouragement and pats on our backs but also surprise snacks. In return, we delivered what they knew we could for SICC - the glory of being the ladies’ champions in our inaugural SGA Inter-Club League 2013!

What was the key to your success? It has to be the commitment of all the players. Despite their own busy schedules, everybody on our team managed to stay committed by coming for regular training sessions and games throughout the five-month long tournament.

How confident were you about winning the game?We were pretty confident in the beginning because we had some of the best senior golfers in Singapore with us, and we won last year.

What were some of the challenges you faced during the match?Due to a slightly smaller pool of talents we had to draw from this year, we were a little shorthanded. Last year, we had the help of two guys who were in very good form, unfortunately, they have both returned to their home countries.

Was there anything special you did to prepare yourself for the game? There was no special preparation, but we did put in a lot of effort into training and were committed towards winning the game.

Do you feel that the team performed well throughout the entire game?We performed well, but there were couple of games where we let ourselves down.

What happened? We expected to perform well but it did not turn out as well as we hoped. It didn’t help that we had bad weather at the start of the series – which we could not control. During the series, the first three to four games were washed out; there was an instance when we were playing at Jurong Country Club and we were seven up seven to go when heavy rain and thunderstorm came, causing the game to be called off for the day. There were two to three games where we were leading by a good margin before the game was called off because of bad weather. As per tourament rules, since the game was called off, our points were reduced by half.

Are you happy with being the first-runner up?Yes, we will come back next year and put our best team forward. There’s a great camaraderie and excitement that comes from overcoming every challenge we face as a team - which is why we keep coming back for a great game every time.

Kucz MATEuSz – Stroke Play

ChamPion

Despite juggling between intensive school schedules and golf practices after school hours and on the weekends, Kucz Mateusz managed to clinch the

Stroke Play Championship 2013 trophy. He made sure to have comprehensive golf training and personal gym time to ensure that he was fully-prepared. He might have a slow start in the beginning but nonetheless he gained back his pace and momentum and performed to the best of his ability for the rest of the match. He may be the champion, but he thinks that could have performed better, we spoke to him to find out why.

What was the key to your success in this championship?Playing golf regularly, trying to make as few mistakes as possible and big numbers are all key factors. It is easy to earn a big score but it is tedious and time consuming to make up with birdies. I made some key putts on Bukit in the fourth round to keep my momentum and my lead up. To stay at the top of the game. I made sure to keep my tee shots in play on the third and fourth rounds which were the tougher courses and made sure that each of my shots was in focus. The short length of the game was another key that kept me afloat for the remaining rounds.

How confident were you about winning the tournament?I practiced and played golf consistently so I was confident in playing in the Stroke Play Championship. I knew that I would encounter bad holes in my rounds but I kept my spirit up despite every swing. I know it is essential to focus on the next shot and post a good score hence I do not want to make a bad swing that will ruin my game.

NOveMBeR GOLF FIXTuRES

What were some of the challenges you faced during the game?My first two rounds of performance did not meet my expectation; I was hitting the golf ball quite poorly, especially off the tees. This caused wayward tee shots and stressed me a little. Unfortunately, my putting, especially the short putts were not good. I missed a few putts inside eight feet and this made me lose confidence. During the first two rounds, I was able to post reasonable scores by using a conservative strategy. I played much better during the third and fourth rounds mainly due to a better tempo in my swing. I hit my driver and irons better, albeit a few miscues in both rounds. Unfortunately I could not get the putter hot otherwise it could have been a couple of low rounds.

What inspired you to learn to play golf?My father first introduced me to the game but I now push myself to be better. I also enjoy playing against friends who are good players to test my limits. I really enjoy the individuality of golfers, competitors, the uniqueness of the sport, the competitive and exciting nature of the game.

How did you do to prepare yourself for this tournament?I try to play or practice every day, around three or four hours on weekdays after school and ten or eleven hours on weekends. As practice, I did try to play at least all four courses, especially at the New and Bukit courses to familiarize myself and formulate a game plan. It is always important to have a good game plan or an idea of how you will play a course on the day of the tournament. I also went to the gym twice or three times a week because it is important to keep yourself strong, flexible and healthy to play good golf.

Did you feel any stress to perform well?I wanted to perform well on my home courses so there was definitely some stress. It was great that I was playing against my good friend Jesse Atlas for all four rounds, which helped to keep the pressure off.

Any advice for other golfers? Some golfers spend too much time on the range and rarely go out and play. If you want to play good golf you have to spread your time between practice and play. You can never practice your short game enough. With regards to playing, you must always keep a confident positive attitude and have a good tempo and rhythm to your swing.

SIcc VS ROYAL SELANGOR INTERpORT

On Saturday and Sunday, 19 and 20 Oct, our friends at the Royal Selangor Golf club came to play at the SICC courses. Unfortunately because

of the bad weather, much of the game on Saturday was washed off and the game came to a draw. Sunday’s weather picked up a little and SICC came in as the winning team. The bad weather failed to dampen spirits and that weekend was a particularly memorable and fun one.

Do you ever wonder why you hit it way better on the range than on the golf course? It probably has

as much to do with how you practice as with what you practice. Most people I observe come to the range, get their bucket of balls, warm up with hitting some irons but with no target and then start bashing their driver for the remainder of their practice balls - that is not practice. That is closer to a cardio workout than practicing the movement patterns of your golf swing.

pRAcTIcE LIKE YOu pLAYBy Tim Ressa, USPGA CP, TPI Certified

Here are four suggestions to get the most out of the time you have to practice:

1. Practice picking out a target and going through your pre-shot routine with each shot.

Going through your routine will make it similar to the golf course and let you re-focus in between shots. Have a target and change it repeatedly. Never aim where the mat is pointing. There are no mats on the course so you will not be able to rely on them. Take ownership of your practice environment and pick a target and align to it.

2. Work on your weaknesses, not you strengths.

Don’t be afraid to look bad and work on what you have trouble with. Real improvement comes with stepping outside the box and working on your weaknesses.

3. Make more practice swings than actually hitting balls.

If you are working on something in your swing, practice making really deliberate movements or work on the position you are trying to achieve. The mirror gives you feedback visually and the deliberate movement helps you build myelin in your brain to be able to repeat these movements. For every five deliberate swings you make, you can try it once with a real golf ball. So in an hour of practice, you only need to hit forty actual golf balls. That’s 200 swings for learning a new pattern of motion and forty actual golf balls.

4.Take breaks.

People can only focus intensely for a short amount of time, before they lose focus and go back to what feels comfortable. After every five minutes of high intensity practice, don’t forget to take a break - get a drink or check your phone. After your break, refocus your energy on what you have set to accomplish and get back to it.

Most of us have a limited time to practice, but if you use the time wisely, you can and will improve.

SICC JUNIOR NEWSLETTERBy Stuart Holmes

GOLF

THE BIG DAYHave you ever noticed how you

feel before the “Big Game”? Players often feel a wide range of

emotions, which can affect how the body reacts once you start your competition. Determining factors may include the weather conditions on the day, which course will you be playing, your playing partners, your recent form, or even parent pressure. All of these factors can make or break your day.

Feelings of anger, frustration, nervousness or even resentment towards other players can cause overwhelming stress to the player. Rarely do these feelings produce strength, confidence, determination or offer any other positive effect…except perhaps if you are a world class players.

When a player enters a competition they must want to challenge themselves and achieve a higher standard. During a competition the mind can think up some crazy scenarios, however as a player you have to embrace these feelings and learn to overcome them or learn to ignore them. During a normal round of golf the player’s brain is more at ease, allowing itself to think that this is just a casual round, but once the competition word is mentioned the brain fires off signals to stay focused.

Becoming mentally stronger is not often talked about since it often seems like a sign of weakness to admit that you are scared or not confident. The turning point starts with how you think and what you tell yourself when playing.

Here`s a scenario for you: during the last two months that you’ve played in the Junior Medal, you’ve been paired with the same person each time, and guess what? He has beaten you on both occasions. Once again the big game comes around and can you believe it - you are paired with that same person that you can’t seem to beat. After five holes you are two shots behind him and your mind starts to think, “oh gosh, here it goes again, he is going to beat me yet again!” Before you panic, breathe in and try and plant a positive seed in your mind by saying, “ there are still four holes to go and, as the saying goes, third time lucky for me!” Believe that beating them can be done. It’s your turn to win today, and you deserve it because you’ve put in extra effort for this game.

Whatever the end result, a player must thrive in the competitive arena and love being able to take on a challenge on the golf course.

Remember: when playing out in the hot sun and facing a difficult game, smile and think ‘its better than…’

Robin on Rules

THE GROuND uNDER REpAIR RuLE cAN BE TRIcKY

EXTRACTS FROM THE RULES OF GOLF AND DECISIONS PRINTED WITH KIND PERMISSION OF THE R&A.COPYRIGHT 2013 R G LANGDALE. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Members are welcome to email Rules queries to [email protected] to stimulate more interesting articles.

This situation, which arose during a social game at the Club, is covered under Rule 25, Abnormal Ground

Conditions, which includes the Ground Under Repair (GUR) rule; under Rule 25-1.b, a player may take a free drop within one club length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.

But in this situation, the other player is referring to the Exception to this which says, “A player may not take relief under this Rule if interference by anything other than an abnormal ground condition makes the stroke clearly impracticable …”

For the solution to this, we need to refer to the definition of GUR in Section ll, Definitions, at the front of the Rules book, which includes “All ground and any grass, bush, tree or other growing thing are part of the GUR”.

Therefore the offending bush that is holding the player’s ball is part of the GUR; the Exception does not apply and the player is entitled to free relief.

There are 22 decisions about GUR situations and some of the more interesting are:

25/7 A fallen tree in the process of being sawn up and stacked is “material piled for removal” and hence GUR.

25/8 A tree stump that is not marked as GUR and is not in the process of being unearthed or cut up for removal does not constitute “material piled for removal”, and so is not GUR.

25/9 A tree that has fallen onto a fairway due to a windstorm and is still attached to the stump, is not GUR unless so marked. However, a player could request relief from the Committee, which would be justified in declaring the area covered by the tree to be GUR.

25/10.5 A player’s ball is found through the green in a tree that is rooted in an area marked as GUR. The spot on the ground directly under where the ball lies is outside the white-lined area

My ball is stuck between those branches but I can take a freedrop under the GUR rule.

No, the ball is clearly unplayable. so you will have to take a penalty drop from the unplayable lie

defining the GUR. The player is entitled to free relief because according to the definition, the tree, being rooted in the GUR is part of the GUR.

25/10.7 A player’s ball lies against a root, outside the GUR, of a tree that is within the GUR. The player is not entitled to relief from the GUR because according to the definition the margin of GUR extends vertically downwards, but not upwards, so the root, at or below ground level is not GUR.

25/13 If an entire bunker, under repair, is designated by the Committee as GUR, it loses its status as a hazard and is automatically classified as “through the green”, and is treated as GUR.

25-1a If a player’s ball is outside GUR but a tree within the GUR interferes with his swing the player can take free relief from GUR.

Wine Fair season is just in time for the end-of-year season. There is no better time to stock up your wines for the merry-making. Don’t miss out on the great deals!

Grand Bateau Blanc 2009, AOC Bordeaux

75% Sauvignon, 25% Sémillon and harvested 100 percent by hand. A whiff of this will fill your nose with notes of buttery vanillin-oak and exotic fruit. Palate-wise, this offers powerful flavours but does not overwhelm your tastebuds, thanks to the nice balance between oak and fruit.

Grand Bateau Rouge 2010, AOC Bordeaux

75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet and harvested 100% by hand. This offers a nose of ripe red fruits, spices and an elegant touch of new oak. The round fruit flavours such as those from the ripe tannins meld together in tasteful harmony and leaves a lingering savoury finish on the tongue.

BowLing

38 islander November 2013

Mr. Christopher Yeo and Mrs. Wendy Neo both emerged winners on 14 September at the Men & Ladies 3-6-9 Bowling Tournament. We spoke with them find out what goes behind a winner’s mind.

Thinking like a winner

Men’s winner: Christopher YeoWhat was the key to your success at this bowling tournament? During this tournament, I went in really relaxed and tried not to expect anything, so I guess that helped a lot. I just concentrated on throwing good shots and nothing else.

How confident were you about winning this game?I was pretty confident but really didn’t think about it.

What were some of the challenges you faced during the game?As with any bowling competition, changing lane conditions are always the biggest challenge. Knowing when to adjust the target or when to change bowling balls is a skill that bowlers should learn to master.

What inspired you to pick up bowling? My father introduced me to bowling at the old Wan Tho bowling alley at a very young age, and I have loved it ever since.

What did you do to prepare yourself for this game?I didn’t do anything special to prepare myself. I bowl quite often usually, so I just thought of it as any other day.

Did you feel stressed during this game? No, I didn’t feel stressed at all. Perhaps towards the end, when I noticed the young guns were bowling very well, but I took it as a challenge and seeing that just spurred me on to bowl better.

Any advice for fellow bowlers? My advice to fellow bowlers would be to just relax and enjoy the game!

Ladies winner: Wendy neoWhat was the key to your success at this bowling tournament? I told myself to stay focused, relaxed and forget the stress of the tournament.

How confident were you about winning this game?I didn’t expect to win anything. As per usual, I treat all games like a training or leisure session.

What were some of the challenges you faced during the game?I was afraid that I would let stress take over my thoughts and I was a little worried about losing focus as well.

What inspired you to pick up bowling? My family. Bowling is a game we all enjoy playing. We will make it a point to get together to play at least once a week.

What did you do to prepare yourself for this game? It’s all about practice and more practice.

Any advice for fellow bowlers?Practice make perfect. Have an open mind and try to take in others’ comments on your mistakes.

The heavy downpour on the afternoon of 20th October 2013 failed to dampen the spirits of some 45 tennis players from the Royal Bangkok Sports

Club (RBSC) and our members. Our visitors from Bangkok were very glad to find that our club has three covered tennis courts so that the games could continue despite the rainy weather. Many were impressed with the design of the covered courts and even urged their committee members to consider building one in RBSC. The official score of the Interport match was 7-3, which was in favour of our club. A number of social matches were also arranged so that there could be better interaction between members of both clubs. After the games, the players came together to have dinner at our Tennis & Squash Complex. Old friends caught up with each other and new friendships were made.

Fit vibe or Vibrogym fitness is a form of vibration training that works by transferring vibrations to muscles causing them to contract 30 to 60 times per

second. The vibrations also creates a reflex contraction of the muscles that produces higher levels of muscle activation than can be achieved in normal exercise.

It also provides an array of muscle relaxation, massage and circulation building functions. It is highly recommended for Golfers and rehabilitative candidates.

Research shows that 15 to 20 minute workouts on the WBV deliver benefits equivalent to one-hour of conventional training and can improve body toning, accelerate fat loss, reduce cellulite, flatten the abdominal, create muscle relaxation, improve circulation and improve flexibility.
