I’m inside, again it’s raining and ourpoor fairgrounds haven’t dried out sincelast fall. The fairboard has been maintain-ing the grounds this spring and we are con-fident it will be in great shape come Au-gust 3.

We just finished a Holstein show thatused all but two buildings on the grounds. This turned out to be a great shake-downfor the fair.

We pride ourselves as having one of, ifnot the largest animal shows of any countyin the state. Our numbers have held orgained for many years. Once again, we ex-pect normal gain for 2011.

This year, we have brought back someproven acts anchoring the entertainmentbuilding free stage each night. Blurred Vi-sion starts off Thursday night, followed byHillbilly Mafia on Friday night. DeepFried Tweeters will pack them in Saturday, and Lost Cause will close out Sunday.

If you are leaning toward more excite-ment, try our grandstand presentations wehave put together for you. Wednesdaynight, free ATV pulls make their first ap-pearance.

On Thursday, Night of Destructionmakes its annual appearance, wreckingeverything in sight. Friday night, Red

Neck Drag Races makes their second ap-pearance, after a great success last year.Saturday night, Arlington Raceway racesagain put on a fantastic show. Sunday af-ternoon the annual Demolition Derby willpull together the best demo drivers around.

Many families are pressed for fundsagain this year so we are trying to provideboth free and reduced price events for thewhole family. On Thursday, the Bake-and-Taste event takes place with prizes of $25

for first, through $10 for fourth. There willbe adult and youth divisions.

This year’s category is muffins. Therules are in the newly designed ExhibitorHandbook, along with information aboutthe many contests open from experts toklutzes, like me.

Other free offerings include Miss SibleyCounty Queen Coronation on Wednesday,Karaoke night Thursday, Sheephead tour-nament Friday, Polka church service Sun-

day morning, Sr. Citizen day Friday, cen-tury farm presentation Sunday, and last butnot least judging, judging, judging: 4-H,open class, adult, children, and probablyklutz class for people like me.

I forget each year to highlight our horsepresentation, a program that grows everyyear. Off and on throughout the fair wewill present draft horse demonstrationsand tours of the draft horse barn in build-ing 18. The group of volunteers has gra-ciously donated time and equipment foryour enjoyment. Please let them know howpleased you are when you visit them. OnSaturday, at 8 a.m. the Sheriff’s Possepresents their annual payback game showin the horse arena, east of the race track. On Sunday, the WSCA Open Horse Showstarts at 8 a.m. at the horse arena.

For Kids’ Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.,we present our Kids’ Day program with ananimal petting zoo, video racing, pedalpull and drawings for fabulous prizes.

Our arm band days, where kids can rideall the carnival rides during a time span forone arm band price will be available againthis year. Watch for more informationcoming soon.

I hope this snapshot starts you thinkingabout the great Sibley County get together. It’s right around the corner and coming onat a lightning speed. I’ll see you there.

Poor eyesight can affect a child’s ability to learn, athleticperformance and self-esteem. In fact, undetected visionproblems are often mistaken for learning disabilities. Youcan protect your child with routine professional eye exami-nations. Children should have an eye exam before enteringschool and periodically thereafter to detect the presence ofexisting or developing vision problems.

By Joy CohrsSibley County Fair Board Member

I recently visited the Thies farm near Ar-lington, also home to Kathleen’s Gardens. The Thies family lives on dad, Kevin’shome farm of 400 acres which they oper-ate along with Kathleen’s Gardens wherestrawberries are the main commodity.

Kevin, a former member of the GoodCheer 4-H club in Sibley County and inaddition to the farm, works part-time at theWinthrop Post Office.

Mom, Kathleen also a former 4-Herfrom Pipestone County, keeps busy withthe strawberries and other garden crops. She served as a Sibley County ExtensionAgent from 1984-88. Kathleen’s Gardenshas been in operation for 19 years.

Kevin and Kathleen have three sons,Eric, Andrew and Sam.

Eric the oldest, a 2007 graduate is a for-mer 4-Her. He attended the University ofNebraska, Lincoln and received his Mas-ter’s degree in accounting from the Univer-sity of Minnesota, and is now employed byAgStar and will be working in Mankato.

Andrew is a 2011 Sibley East graduate, where he was a member of the FFA, stu-dent council, and participated in track, cross country, and basketball. He has beenin 4-H for 13 years, a member of the HighIsland Clovers and is currently the Presi-

dent of the Sibley County 4-H Federation. He also participated in the 4-H FoodShow, Job Interview Contest, Share theFun, Arts In, softball, and livestockdemonstrations, at the county and statelevels.

Andrew served as camp counselor at 4-Hcamp for 4 years. Summer of 2010, he hadthe opportunity to serve as a volunteerworker at the Minnesota State Fair FFAMiracle of Birth Center. He worked prima-rily with poultry and rabbits.

It proved to be a very rewarding experi-ence, educating the visitors, and also an-swering some very funny questions.

Like many, Andrew said his favorite partof 4-H is the fair. His livestock projectsthis year include: poultry, rabbits, pigs, and goats. He will be showing chickens, ducks, geese, and guinea hens for his poul-try project. He has shown pigs since hestarted in 4-H, and rabbits for 6 years, goats for the past 2 years. He will alsoenter fruits, vegetable gardening, potatoes, and in the wildlife project. This fall, An-drew plans to go to South Dakota StateUniversity to study pharmacy.

Brother Sam, has been in 4-H for 9years and will be in ninth grade this fall.He is in track, cross county, basketball, and FFA.

He has participated in DemonstrationDay, Food Show, Job Interview Contest,

Share the Fun,and is currentlythe club Treasurer.

Sam’s livestockprojects this yearinclude poultry, rabbits, pigs, andgoats. He’s also invegetable garden-ing, and potatoprojects. Sam sayshis favorite proj-ect is the Boergoats he shows. He is also takingcrop sciences.

Both Andrewand Sam alsoenter their proj-ects in the openclass division atthe fair.

As the County Fair rolls around, ourcommunities take time to remember thosethings which bring us together. The sim-ple joy of seeing old friends and enjoyingtreasured foods is without compare. How-ever, some fairgoers find an even greaterjoy – the chance to show off their best andsee the efforts of others acrossthe county. For youth in the4-H program, yearlongprojects and experi-ences culminate intheir best work beingshown and judged forall to see. 4-H youthtake pride in theirwork and gain a de-sire for quality in allthey do. These samelessons are learnedwhether participating incitizenship, consumer ed-ucation, gardening, photog-raphy, crafts, fine arts, live-stock, nutrition, leadership, or one of thenumerous other project areas in 4-H.Preparing fair entries gives youth the satis-faction of seeing a project from start to fin-ish.

While these fair entries are an importantpart of the 4-H experience, opportunitiesfor youth to grow and learn new thingscontinue after the county fair ends. Pro-

grams and activities abound, includingcommunity pride, demonstration day, theambassador program, exchange trips, shooting sports, leadership conferences, judging teams, and more. Unique pro-grams such as these offer the chance togain lifelong skills such as leadership, self-discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, public speaking, critical thinking, and timemanagement. This makes 4-H a program

with benefits that have lastingimpact on children’s lives.

The wonderful effectsof 4-H would not bepossible without thecontinuous efforts ofparents and other vol-

unteers. Whether theyare helping withevents at the fair, or-ganizing club meet-ings and activities, or

just simply encourag-ing their children, these

dedicated individuals en-sure that 4-H runs smoothly.

Thanks to all of the parents, volunteers, and organizations

who support 4-H. To find out more information about be-

coming a member of 4-H, and adult leader,or a volunteer, please contact the SibleyCounty Extension office at (507) 237-4100or visit the Extension website at http://ex-tension.umn.edu.
