Program Setting I Novosibirsk-Tomsk-Barnaul Region We will visit several institutes and field sites in this region. The purpose of our stay in this region will be to learn about various scientific initiatives to promote sustainable development. We will also visit some farms in this region in order to explore the difference between private farms and collective farms.

Luvic Chernozems Profile scheme: Ah—AhBt—Bt—Bк—Cк Presence of thick (up to 50 cm) humus horizon with mull type of humus. Presence of residual silica covering structural soil elements in lower part of Ah horizon and transitional AhBt horizon. Presence of condensed Bt horizon enriched in clay. Structural soil elements in that horizon have cutans on their surface. Leaching of carbonates from upper soil layer and forming illuvial-carbonate horizon – Bk. Carbonates in Luvic chernozem lie deeper than in Leached chernozems. It reflects the intensity of leaching: the deeper carbonates layer the more intensive leaching.

Because of percolative water regime, the migration of soil constituents (dissolved and suspended) occur and as a result, the differentiation of soil profile by composition and properties arise. · Forming ochric A horizon due to weak intensity of development and acumulation of humus. · Presence of Ael horizon (distinguished by light color and depleted in clay). · Clear eluvial-illuvial differentiation of soil profile by color, density, structure. · Presence of clay-enriched Вt horizon with polyhedral structure. · Soil structural elements of Вt horizon have abundant dark-brown cutans on the structural element surfaces. · Carbonates are leached below soil profile.

•The Altai Mountain range is one of the areas of greatest biodiversity within northern Asia

•Listed as UNESCO World Nature Heritage Site

•Total protected area of 1,611,457 ha

•Home to rare snow leopard; Altai population of snow leopards is a core source for populations in surrounding areas

•Headwaters of western Siberia’s most important rivers—The Ob and Irtysh—can also be found here

Modify text Add picture to background Program Setting 2 The Golden Altai Mountains The Golden Altai Mountains is one of the areas of greatest biodiversity within northern Asia and for this reason it has been listed as one of UNESCO’s World Nature Heritage Site. The total protected area covers 1,611,457 ha. One example of a rare species that can be found in the Altai Mountains is the snow leopard. The protected region represents an important source of snow leopards for surrounding regions. The Altai population of snow leopards is a core source for populations in surrounding areas. The headwaters of western Siberia’s most important rivers – The Ob and the Irtysh can also be found in the Altai Mountains.
