Foster + Partners, London. Guests entering the grounds of Capella Singapore wind

their way through groves of trees and up the knolls past an expressively abstract

Bernar Venet sculpture, arriving at a drive that leads to the original two colonial

buildings, which have been masterfully restored. Built in the 1880’s by the British

military, these historic structures once served as recreation and entertainment centres

for the officers. They were named Tanah Merah, Malay words for “red earth.”

Foster + Partners designed Capella Singapore in the shape of a figure-eight, an

auspicious number in Chinese culture that signals prosperity. The property slowly

unveils itself, revealing at first only a hint of the curving architecture that cascades

down toward the sea.

Directly across from Capella Singapore is the championship Sentosa Golf Club.

Regarded as among the top five golf facilities in Asia, Sentosa Golf Club plays host to
