Kalamazoo HistoryThe area on which the modern city standswas once home to Native Americans of the Hopewell culture who migrated intothe area sometime before the rst millen -nium. Evidence of their early residency remains in the form of a small mound indowntowns Bronson Park.
The rst Europeans to reside in the areawere itinerant fur traders in the late 18thand early 19th century. There are recordsof several traders wintering in the area,and by the 1820s at least one trading posthad been established.
In 1829, Titus Bronson, originally fromConnecticut, became the rst white settlerto build a cabin within the present city limits. He platted the town in 1831 andnamed it the vi llage of Bronson. Kalama-zoo was legally incorporated as a vi llagein 1838 and as a city in 1883.
