Menefee D. and Mary Louise Blackwell Director & CEO

DEAR FRIENDS,

ShuttleCork committee members and volunteers have proved to be indefatigable and inspired workers, and on behalf of them and the

Board of Trustees, I welcome you to the third annual ShuttleCork benefitting The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Again this year, ShuttleCork offers two special evenings. First is the chance to enjoy a multi-course meal with fine wines in one of six exceptional venues. Second is an evening at the museum, with a Grand Tasting from 45 top winemakers and restaurants as well as a silent auction, followed by the live auction of one-of-a-kind wine-related treasures and adventures.

I am especially pleased that this year, ShuttleCork is set against a celebration of creativity at the Nelson-Atkins. The exhibition backdrop is Ferran Adrià: Notes on Creativity that allows visitors to examine sketches, models and diagrams that illustrate this Spanish master chef’s intriguing ideas about gastronomy. The exhibition has shown us that creativity knows no boundaries—a concept found especially in the mastery of Adrià, who has a way of transforming food into a sophisticated culinary experience. Around this exhibition, we also celebrate our region’s culinary talent and chefs, many of whom are participating in ShuttleCork. It was a pleasure to welcome Adrià to the area not long ago and to enjoy the creative synergy as top chefs had the opportunity to meet him and cook for him. He was delighted and inspired by what he experienced in Kansas City. As he has opened our minds to the connections between food and art, we have opened his mind by showing his work in an encyclopedic art museum.

Also, the bounty of nature is showcased through art in the whimsical sculptures that we welcome this spring to the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park: Philip Haas: The Four Seasons. Haas is a contemporary artist who created 15-foot sculptures that are a profusion of vegetables, grains, grapes, greenery and flowers. His work is a three-dimensional interpretation of the portrait series of the same name by Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and both the classic and contemporary art makes us take notice of the best that nature has to offer.

An encyclopedic museum such as ours is a place to celebrate excellence, in all of its forms and through all of our senses. ShuttleCork has become such a tradition and strong philanthropic endeavor and supports many of the activities and exhibitions of the Nelson-Atkins, including the quest for creativity and inspiration. For this reason, I am grateful for your support.

I raise my glass to each of you. Enjoy!

Welcome

We are honored and delighted to again co-chair this very special event supporting The Nelson-

Atkins Museum of Art—the institution that has done so much to enrich the cultural life of our city and region. ShuttleCork brings together enthusiastic wine collectors and lovers of wine with Kansas City’s award-winning chefs in an unparalleled setting and world-class art.

This event would not be as unique or successful without the very gracious hosts of our six “Winemaker Dinners,” and we are most grateful for their generosity. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the ShuttleCork committee members, along with numerous others who contributed to these memorable evenings. And, of course, we would like to express our deep appreciation to all of our fabulous Corporate Sponsors, especially Bank of America, which graciously agreed to be our Presenting Sponsor for a second year in a row. Lastly, our biggest thanks goes to you for your passionate support of the crown jewel of Kansas City—The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Cheers to wine, food and art!

Conditions of Purchase

PRICING

The dollar figures shown on almost all lots are sometimes an educated guess, sometimes based on commercial auctions. In almost every instance where donors or wineries have indicated values or retail prices, the dollar figure shown by the lot is lower; in other words, more often than not, our estimates are a bargain. Bidding may begin below, and the final bid may be less than, but we hope will be considerably above the stated figure.

AuCTION PROCEDuRES

1. Neither Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor ursula Hermacinski [“The Auctioneer”] are responsible for the accuracy of the descriptions of auction lots contained in the catalog. The descriptions incorporate, in some instances, materials or descriptions furnished by donors. In particular, prospective bidders should inspect wines prior to bidding and make their own judgment with reference to the quality and value of such wines.

2. Any trips or events comprising all or part of an auction lot shall, unless otherwise specified in the catalog description, be subject to convenient scheduling by the lot donors and the successful bidder. In addition, unless otherwise specified, purchasers of events are expected to schedule the event to occur within twelve months of the Auction. Attention: Some trips and events are date specific and cannot be re-scheduled. Purchasers may not transfer or resale events or trip lots.

3. All wine is sold on an “as-is” basis, and neither the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor The Auctioneer make any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with respect to any property included in an auction lot.

4. The Auctioneer shall have the absolute right to withdraw any auction lot, reject any auction bid, resolve any dispute with reference to any auction lot or any bid on any auction lot at any time before the fall of the hammer. No bid is valid unless acknowledged as such by The Auctioneer.

5. All wines sold at the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction are subject to the provisions of Missouri law and the regulations of the Missouri Department of Revenue.

6. Any property may be withdrawn by The Auctioneer or the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefore.

7. The Auctioneer and the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by The Auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, The Auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or tore-offer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction’s records shall be conclusive in all respects.

18

TAx APPLICABILITY

Purchasers shall be required to pay all state and local retail sales taxes applicable on the date of sale. As a general rule, the Missouri sales tax shall apply to the full purchase price of all items included in auction lots but not to prices paid for trips or private events. All payments for auction lots shall be made to the Nelson Gallery Foundation. The Nelson Gallery Foundation is classified as a tax-exempt corporation under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). Bidders may be entitled to deduct a portion of their payments for auction lots as a charitable contribution, but each bidder should consult her or his attorney or tax advisor regarding such deductibility for state or federal income tax purposes. The Nelson Gallery Foundation will provide documentation as required by law following the auction.

PAYMENT AND PICKuP

1. Payment for all auction lots on Friday, May 1, (Live and Silent) shall be made within one hour following the conclusion of the Live Auction.

2. Full payment must be made prior to removal of any auction lot.

3. All payments must be made by cashier or certified check, or by Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Company or personal checks will be accepted only upon submittal of identification and credit responsibility satisfactory to the representative of the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction responsible for accepting payment.

4. Wines offered by a winery for future bottling must be paid for just as other lots. Arrangements for bottling and for delivery of such wines, including payment of applicable Missouri Alcohol taxes, shall be the responsibility of the bidder.

LOT REMOVAL

1. Lots purchased at the Silent or Live Auction on Friday, May 1, must be picked up and removed by successful bidders following payment at the conclusion of the Auction on Friday, May 1.

2. The Nelson Gallery Foundation shall not be responsible for any lots left at the auction site.

Meet the Auctioneer

URSULA HERMACINSkI Gavelgal

Ursula’s auction career started long ago at Christie’s Fine Art Auctioneers. She came to wine via her skills as an auctioneer. Not only was Ursula Christie’s first female wine auctioneer, she was the first woman ever to wield the gavel at the famous Napa Valley Wine Auction. Since then Ursula has presided over most of the country’s top benefit wine auctions. Ursula has been a featured speaker at various conferences such as the Aspen Food and Wine Festival, the International Pinot Noir Celebration, the American Institute of Wine and Food and has been a guest on general news shows including CNN’s Marketplace. In 2005, Vanity Fair magazine included Ursula as one of the “definitions” in the inaugural Wine Snob’s Dictionary. From 2006–2010, Ursula stepped away from the auction podium to oversee the ownership transition of Napa Valley’s iconic property,

Screaming Eagle. Now back at the podium, she acts as a Senior Advisor and Principal Auctioneer at Wally’s Auctions, a formidable new force in the international fine and rare wine auction market. Ursula also holds the position of Wine Ambassador at the St. Regis Deer Valley Resort where she plans exclusive wine events for hotel guests, Deer Crest Club members and local Park City, Utah wine enthusiasts. Additionally, Ursula is the author of The Wine Lovers

Guide to Auctions, the definitive manual of buying and selling wine at auction.

vERTICALS OF NAPA vALLEY CABERNET One of the great joys of any winemaker is to open a vertical of their wines, showing off the unique expressions of each vintage while demonstrating the underlying qualities that are the structure for the wines. This lot consists of separate verticals of miniscule production wines from two distinct Napa Valley regions, both known for producing complex, long-lived wines that develop nuance over time, allowing each vintage to truly take on its own character. Located in the heart of Oakville, the Stanton family farms just over thirty acres of land and supplies Cabernet Sauvignon to many of the top wineries in Napa. On the property is a small two-acre patch of Cabernet that the family keeps for itself to make their own micro-production estate wine. The Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley is home to some of the steepest Cabernet vineyards in the world, some of which are farmed by Vineyard 7 & 8, which sits at an altitude of 2000 feet, high above the valley floor. No longer produced, the 7 Reserve Cabernet from the Spring Mountain District is an expression of the power and depth the wines from this mountainous region can achieve.

INTERNATIONAL RHONE EXPRESSIONS The predominant varietals of the Rhone Valley, Syrah and Grenache have planted around the world, showcasing the power and intrigue of these wines throughout different wine growing regions. Roman Bratasiuk changed the course of winemaking forever in Australia with the launch of his Clarendon Hills property and was referred to by Robert Parker as “…one of planet Earth’s greatest winemakers.” This lot starts with 1998 Old Vines Grenache from the Kangarilla property, a true “old vines” vineyard with pre-phylloxera vines. Next is Guidici Family Vineyard Syrah from Whetstone Wine Cellars. This Sonoma Coast property is located just outside Occidental and is amongst the coolest Syrah growing regions in America, introducing a classic Northern Rhone element to the wine. Finally, there is one bottle of Bosquet des Papes Cuvee Chantemerle Chateauneuf du Pape from the legendary 1998 vintage. This Grenache-dominated blend with Syrah and Mourvedre blended in has been aging beautifully and will continue to develop for another five to six years.

CHÂTEAU L’ARROSEE Long considered a hidden gem in Bordeaux, this Saint-Émilion property produced stunning wines under the Château L’Arrosee label through the 2012 vintage, at which point it was acquired by the owners of acclaimed Bordeaux First Growth Château Haut-Brion. In 2005 the winery produced an immaculate expression of Saint-Émilion that Robert Parker described as “…not a hard edge to be found in this quintessentially elegant yet densely concentrated, savory wine.” A truly exceptional wine, these vineyards will now be incorporated into Château Quintus.

This lot is three bottles of Old Vines Grenache from the Blewitt Springs Vineyard, the highest altitude region in the McLaren Vale and the furthest inland from the sea, where the deep soils produce wines of soft, rich tannins and breathtaking fruit.

CLARENDON HILLS OLD vINES kANGARILLA ROAD GRENACHE It is rare to be able to pinpoint exactly when a winery or wine region first came to prominence, but with Clarendon Hills of the McLaren Vale there is one date in particular that stands out. In February of 1998 in issue #115 of The Wine Advocate Robert Parker reviewed a new property outside of Adelaide called Clarendon Hills and announced they were making “two of the most decadent wines on the planet.” One of those wines was the 1996 Clarendon Hills Old Vines Kangarilla Vineyard Grenache. Since that day this has been one of the defining wines for all of Australia.

JJ PRUM COLLECTION The world of German Riesling is vast and can be quite daunting, but the name Joh Jos Prum can always be counted on to deliver stunning wines. This lot is a spectacular tour through the range and styles of German Riesling, all coming from one of the true masters. A bottle of 2007 Kabinett is a perfect introduction to the clean, refined, and beautiful flavors of top quality German Riesling. Next, a bottle of 2005 Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese demonstrates how Riesling begins to take on deeper characteristics as it ages. For a true world-class, in-depth comparison of the subtle nuances amongst the best Rieslings there are four bottles from the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. There are two bottles from the 2010 vintage, one Spatlese and one Auslese, and then an additional Spatlese from 1997 and an Auslese from 2002. These four wines show the stunning development Riesling undergoes over time and also allows for the exploration of the differentiation achieved by harvesting at varying degrees of ripeness. Finally, there is a single bottle of Bernkasteler Schlossberg Spatlese from 1983, which will end any arguments over whether or not Riesling is an age-worthy wine.

EXCEPTIONAL FRENCH OFFERINGS This six-bottle lot is a showcase of some of the absolute finest expressions from throughout France, starting with a bottle of exquisite Zind-Humbrecht Clos Saint Urbain Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles from the Alsace Grand Cru Rangen. The Grand Cru of Rangen is so impossibly steep that it can only be farmed by terracing the vineyards, and the appellation is renowned for producing some of the most intense and concentrated wines anywhere in the word, and this particular dessert wine, made in almost microscopic qualities in only the finest of years, has been described by Robert Parker as “…so rich that it makes Chateau d’Yquem look like an under-nourished wine. Truly the stuff of legends …” Of equally legendary status are the wines of the great Burgundian Domaine Coche-Dury. Each of the wines made by this fabled house are fanatically sought after by true lovers of great Burgundy, and the Domaine farms less than two acres of vines in the Meursault vineyard of Les Rougeots, but from this tiny holding comes a White Burgundy that stands along the greatest wines made anywhere in the world. An additional bottle of White Burgundy is the Puligny-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive. Making only white wines, Domaine Leflaive is viewed by many experts as the companion winery to Red Burgundy superstar Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. From Bordeaux there are two Right Bank offerings from Saint-Émilion, each from highly celebrated vintages in the early 2000’s. There is a representation of classic Right Bank style with Clos Fourtet 2003 and then a bottle of Château Figeac 2000, which consists of a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than most Right Bank estates. Finally, from the historic 2007 vintage in Chateauneuf du Pape comes Croix de Bois from legendary Rhone house M. Chapoutier.

Mazis-Chambertin holds a special distinction for showing even more quality and character than most of this amazing vineyard, “the Grand Cru of a Grand Cru” in some ways. NAPA vALLEY RETROSPECTIvE This collection of wines spans over 30 years and all areas of the Napa Valley, presenting the opportunity to experience the vineyards and wines that have made the Napa Valley the leading wine region in the New World. Beginning with a bottle of1979 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet from the long-established Napa legend located high atop the mountains on the western edge of Napa, this lot stretches all the way back to when Napa Valley was first gaining recognition as one of the world’s premier wine-growing regions. A bottle of 1991 Dominus follows, documenting a time when Napa was well-established and leading French winemaker Christian Moueix had begun producing the Bordeaux-influenced Dominus from the immaculate estate vineyard in Yountville. Some of the most-structured and longest-lived wines in Napa come from Randy Dunn, and a magnum of 1992 Dunn Napa Valley showcases the work of this Napa legend. 2002 was an exceptional vintage and is represented here by 2002 Merus Cabernet which is sourced from the recently recognized Coombsville AVA, located in the southeast corner of Napa Valley. Napa saw another outstanding vintage in 2004 and this lot includes one bottle each of 2004 Caymus Special Selection, long recognized as a standard-bearer for the region, and 2004 Philip Togni Vineyard, a classic expression of the power and character found in the Spring Mountain District. A bottle of 2006 Coup de Foudre Cabernet shows the complexity that can be achieved by sourcing grapes from premier sites throughout the valley, and a magnum of Lail Vineyards Mole Hill Cabernet demonstrates the immense depth achieved from the finest vineyards on Howell Mountain. Much of the current attention paid to Napa Valley is focused on the rich, powerful wines coming from the Oakville AVA, and a bottle of 2009 Gargiulo Money Ranch Cabernet demonstrates why these wines are increasingly being acclaimed by wine lovers everywhere. The original JJ Cohn vineyard is located in the heart of Rutherford, and the 2010 Scarecrow Cabernet is sourced from this historic and celebrated vineyard, a brilliant modern interpretation of one of the oldest and most revered gems in Napa Valley. To close out the lot is a bottle of 2012

Lot L14When young visitors walk through The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art for the first time, their sense of wonder is clearly visible. When they return a second time, a third time and again, they are deepening their understanding of how art expresses the emotions, cultures and traditions of mankind. The museum’s dynamic educational program gives students and teachers the tools to build life skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving. Our paddle raise this year will help support youth education at the Nelson-Atkins, and we celebrate the museum’s educational initiatives that are integral to the community. The initiatives require about $1.8 million a year, the equivalent of about $36 per child. This means that every paddle raise of $100 supports the education of nearly three children. A $1,000 paddle raise makes a difference for an entire classroom of students. We invite you to raise your paddle in support of these youth programs:

SCHOOL TOURS, in which volunteer docents lead conversations in galleries

WORKSHOPS, in which community artists help students express their creativity

A TEEN GUIDE PROGRAM that employs and trains teenagers to lead art tours

A TEEN ADVISORY COUNCIL that develops events to engage adolescents in exciting art happenings

An ART DAY CAMP that helps children make gallery connections and create their own art

The future of the visual arts rests in the hands of our youth. Let’s give them the tools they need for a lifelong appreciation of art. Help us support the mission of the Nelson-

Atkins with this year’s paddle raise!

NAPA vALLEY LANDMARkS Within the Napa Valley there are certain sites and vineyards where the mere mention of their name inspires reverence from wine lovers everywhere. Located on the hills rising out of Oakville, Harlan Estate stands as one of the most splendid properties in California, and from these fabled vines comes one of the most sought after and celebrated wines in the world. Bill Harlan is noted for his unwavering pursuit of excellence, which made Harlan Estate the first New World wine to receive consecutive 100 point scores from esteemed wine critic Robert Parker. This lot includes a three-pack of Harlan Estate 1998, a wine that is just now entering its peak drinking window, along with a bottle of Harlan Estate 2006 which could be consumed now to demonstrate the pure power and scope of Harlan but also will continue to develop for 25 years or more. Bryant Family Vineyard sits at the northern edge of Pritchard Hill, a site known for making wines of fantastic concentration and depth. Bryant Family was one of the first “cult cabs” from Napa and continues to be at the top of any “must-have” mailing list wine. The 2011 vintage of Bryant Family Vineyard included in this lot is the rare vintage where even most powerful and famous Napa Valley Cabernets can be approachable in their youth, showing the deep flavors and complexity of this prestigious growing region. When it comes to Napa Valley growers, Andy Beckstoffer is the pre-eminent name and amongst his vast holdings sits one gem that exceeds all others in terms of history and acclaim: the legendary To Kalon vineyard. Here is a bottle of Schrader RBS To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, an example of pure Napa Valley beauty and power. Finally, holding the distinction of being the only wine to twice win the prestigious “Wine of the Year Award” from Wine Spectator is Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. NAPA vALLEY ICONS This lot is a collection of three wines that stand as true monuments to the greatness of Napa Valley, all presented in the original packaging from the winery. Dalla Valle’s estate sits approximately 400 feet above the valley floor overlooking Oakville, and is described by many as the perfect balance between extended sunlight for the vines and a cooling maritime influence. From the 2000 vintage there is a six-pack of Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon, a perfectly aged wine that is now showing the full range of subtlety and intrigue that makes this property one of the most exclusive in all of Napa. From the 2001 vintage there is a three-pack of Maya, an extremely limited blend (less than 500 cases a year) of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that brings together power and richness with fragrance and complexity. Maya, named for the tiny vineyards the wine is sourced from, remains one of the most singular wines in all of Napa Valley. The final item in the lot is a three-pack of Thorevilos from Napa Valley legend David Abreu. Abreu grew up in the valley and his earliest job was working in the original vineyards that would bring Napa Valley to prominence. As a child, he loved going to a field about 800 feet above the valley floor between what is now the St. Helena and Mount Veeder appellations. At the time there were no vines there, but Abreu recognized the potential and has turned that childhood escape into one of the most celebrated vineyards in all of Napa Valley.

In Appreciation

ANDREW WILL WINERY Located on the isolated Vashon Island in Puget Sound, Andrew Will is home to some of the most exciting and fascinating wines made in America. Owner and winemaker Chris Camarda crafts less than 5,000 cases of primarily Bordeaux-styled blends from some of the finest vineyards around Washington, and his wines have been critically acclaimed for their amazing depth, stunning complexity, and unique character that truly brings Washington wines to the a level rivaling their great Bordeaux counterparts.

BERTANI Bertani was founded in 1857 by brothers Gaetano and Giovan Battista Bertani. Prosperous wine merchants who believed that quality winemaking held the key to the future, the Bertanis invested their funds in buying some of the finest vineyards in the province and making their own wines. To maintain its extensive vineyards, Bertani engages the skills of some of Italy’s most eminent viticulturalists. From its vineyards to its cellars, Bertani offers a fascinating and memorable introduction to Veronese winemaking at its best, where progressive techniques and equipment are allied with extensive experience and a deeply felt respect for tradition.

BLACkBIRD vINEYARDS Winery President Paul Leary (returning for his third ShuttleCork!) left Duckhorn Vineyards several years ago to take control of this benchmark estate. Blackbird Vineyards is a delightful passion for Paul and an on-going success, turning out a series of fantastic wines sourced from six different sub-appellations within Napa Valley while looking to the great Bordeaux village of Pomerol for inspiration.

CAIN vINEYARDS AND WINERY A native of Seattle, Christopher Howell fell in love with wine in Washington State, then studied viticulture and enology in France (Montpellier & Bordeaux). He has spent the past 30 years in Napa and Sonoma unlearning and relearning everything—most recently at Cain Vineyard & Winery in Napa Valley where he has worked since 1990. About Cain Vineyard & Winery: Cain Vineyard & Winery overlooks St. Helena from the top of Spring Mountain in the western hills of Napa Valley. The estate vineyard is planted to the five classic varieties of the Cabernet Family: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. They make three wines: Cain Cuvée; Cain Concept, representing the classical benchlands of the Napa Valley; and their signature blend, Cain Five, grown in their estate vineyard. COOPER’S HAWk WINERY Working with the top growers throughout the country, every year Cooper’s Hawk sources grapes from regions that have enjoyed ideal growing conditions. Highly selective on quality, the winery works with outstanding varietals to consistently produce award-winning wines from California, Washington, and Oregon. Since starting production in 2005, Cooper’s Hawk Winery has received over 300 awards from local, national, and international wine competitions.

DAvID ARTHUR vINEYARDS The history of David Arthur Vineyards and the Long Family in the Napa Valley reaches back a half-century to the 1950s. At that time, Don Long began steadily investing in land on Pritchard Hill. He owned a small grocery business in Menlo Park, and had long been interested in the California wine industry. His vision and commitment to build a legacy and business for his family led to the acquisition of nearly 1,000 acres. Nearly two decades later, in the late 1970s, that vision came to fruition when his son David began planting vines on the property. In 2007, David’s daughter Laura joined the family business to run the daily operations. Today, two generations work together to continue the family tradition at David Arthur Vineyards. With the release of the 2010 vintage, the Long Family celebrates 25 years of winemaking.

FOUR GRACES The Black family purchased an existing vineyard in the Dundee Hills of the Willamette Valley in 2003 as a family retreat and immediately began turning the estate into a sustainably farmed, well tended vineyard with the goal of producing rich, elegant, delicious and complex wines. That same year The Four Graces was founded. The winery is named in honor of the Black’s four daughters: Alexis, Juliana, Vanessa, and Christiana. Today The Four Graces produces pinot noir, pinot gris, and pinot blanc renowned nationally and internationally for their balance, elegance, complexity, and richness. The wines are crafted under the guidance of French born Laurent Montalieu one of Oregon’s most respected winemakers.

GLORIA-FERRER Back in the early 80’s there were only a handful of winegrowers planting Pinot Noir in Carneros. And yet, the Ferrer Family knew the key to a world-class méthode champenoise wine would be Pinot Noir. The Gloria Ferrer winemaking team’s quest for perfection takes them to Champagne where they manage to acquire Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones. Gloria Ferrer is not only the first sparkling wine house in Sonoma Carneros, but also the first to plant Champagne clones and the first to plant in Carneros. Almost thirty years later, with 335 acres under vine, the estate vineyards at Gloria Ferrer produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that rival some of the world’s finest.

GOLDSCHMIDT vINEYARDS Born and educated in New Zealand, Nick Goldschmidt’s career began in 1982 with a research position at the New Zealand Lincoln University where he graduated with Distinction in Horticulture. Nick went on to specialize in viticulture studies at Wagga Wagga, and oenology at the highly acclaimed Roseworthy program, at Adelaide University in South Australia. During his time as a student Nick worked at noted wineries such as Kumeu River, Coopers Creek and Babich. In 1989, after 18 months of winemaking in Australia, New Zealand, California, and South America; including his first harvest in Chile as winemaker for Calitera, Nick returned to California with an amazing range of winemaking experiences. Prior to starting Goldschmidt Vineyards, Nick was Head Winemaker at Simi throughout the 1990’s and made the Simi Reserve Cabernet one of Sonoma’s most respected red wines.

HESS COLLECTION The Hess Collection was founded on Donald Hess’ belief that great wines come from vineyards of distinction, and Hess has built a winery that has redefined what is expected of mountain-grown wines—once considered to be tough and unyielding. In the hands of the talent at Hess Collection, the style is more generous and just as long-lived. Now viewed as one of the wineries that forever shaped Napa Valley by bringing the power of Mt. Vedder to the attention of so many, The “Hess Collection” also is a world-class art gallery and winery nestled in the mountains above Napa Valley.

J vINEYARDS AND WINERY As a 25-year-old Stanford University graduate in Earth Sciences/Geology, Judy Jordan understood the land. Her belief that soil enriches the flavors of the fruit of the vine influenced her pursuit of unique terroir and “a sense of place” for growing wine grapes. This journey led her to Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley, known for cool climate grape growing and a great diversity of soils—perfect for Champagne method wines. The exploration of terroir in nine, sustainably farmed estate vineyards, while over two decades in the making, has only just begun. The wide variety of alluvial soils found in more than 200 acres in the Russian River Valley have been forming for millions of years and are continually revealing their nuances through Sparkling Wine, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

JONATA The brains behind this amazing Santa Ynez winery is Kansas City-native Matt Dees, who spent many formative summers roaming the halls of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and considers his time there among his most cherished memories growing up in Kansas City. ShuttleCork is excited to have Matt participate for the second year in a row. Matt’s work at Jonata has been wildly praised (the entire program has been built by the brains behind the rare and elusive Screaming Eagle winery). His work at Jonata has been acclaimed throughout the wine community for showcasing the amazing potential that exists in this Central Coast appellation as he produces a stunning array of powerhouse wines.

kRUPP BROTHERS A Bay Area internist with a medical degree from Stanford, Dr. Jan Krupp was hungry for the joy he once felt working his mother’s New England gardens and his uncle’s Virginia farm. Shortly after moving to Napa in 1991 and planting a 41-acre home vineyard, a large swath of land came up for sale just a few miles away. He enlisted his brother Bart, and the two doggedly set about to transform this wild expanse into what is now Stagecoach Vineyard. Dr. Jan Krupp’s passion is evident in the carefully tended vines and hand-crafted wines. On any given day, you’ll find Dr. Krupp supervising the care of the 650-acre vineyard or with the winemaker nurturing the maturing wines.

LAUREL GLEN vINEYARD Bettina Sichel of Laurel Glen Vineyard is back for her third year at ShuttleCork! Laurel Glen Vineyard has long been considered one of the iconic Cabernet vineyards of California. Originally planted in the 1880’s, the present-day vineyard was developed in the 1970’s by Sonoma wine pioneer Patrick Campbell. The first vintage of Laurel Glen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was made in 1981. The vineyard’s combination of high altitude, eastern exposure, rocky soils, and small diurnal temperature swings combine to produce very distinctive wines. Despite its small production, the wine has received international acclaim for its exceptional balance, elegance and ability to age gracefully.

OWEN ROE WINERY Winemaker David O’Reilly seeks to gently coax the most authentic expression of each varietal using minimal handling and traditional techniques. This philosophy of non-interference makes the Owen Roe commitment to the fruit, before it even reaches the winery, paramount. Owen Roe uses only organic materials in the wine-making process in order that the effluence leaving the winery can go directly to wetlands. This principle of stewardship is carried over from vineyard practices where only the most benign and natural products are used to ward off mildew and rot. No herbicides or pesticides are used in Owen Roe vineyards, and weeds that crowd out plants are hoed and left behind in the rows to harbor beneficial bugs.

PEAY vINEYARDS ShuttleCork is proud to welcome back Andy Peay of Peay Vineyards for a third year! Andy took a somewhat roundabout course (Wall Street financial analyst and a year wandering around Asia), before joining his brother Nick at the true “West of West” Sonoma Coast winery. Peay Vineyards produces Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay from estate vineyards, and they capture the true expression of this amazing appellation. The philosophy of Peay is to understand their own vineyards, and to create wines that are so singular they make an impression you will never forget (or, as they say: “… engage your belly and then seep up into your brain.”)

PEDRONCELLI Since 1927, when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased a vineyard and a small winery in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place of the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family’s dedication to making fine wines. The winery sold grapes to home winemakers during Prohibition (home winemaking was perfectly legal!) and following repeal the second generation of the family began to establish the winery that is now a staple of Sonoma. Fourth generation family member Richard Moorehouse joins us to pour wines from one of the truly great family properties that will soon celebrate its 90th birthday and can start looking ahead to its second century as an American wine treasure.

PENNER-ASH Penner-Ash Pinot Noirs and Syrahs are often described as “elegant and earthy, structured and thoughtful.” These qualities come from a fundamental notion of transparency. The wines are made with a desire to break down barriers and to expose the winemaking mystery—to do away with pretense and bring us closer to the source. They have built that desire for transparency and closeness to nature into their winery building. Embraced by 80 acres of land, the winery is stepped into the hillside on three levels and positioned to take full advantage of the breathtaking and expansive views of the Chehalem Valley bounded by the Chehalem Mountains to the north, and the Red Hills of Dundee to the south.

PETER FRANUS WINE COMPANY Peter Franus is a respected Napa Valley winemaker and an insider secret in the wine industry. For 30 years, he’s bonded with the mountain and hillside vineyards of the region, and particularly Mount Veeder on the southwestern flank of the Valley. He has made friends and found avid supporters who connect to his disarming wit and earnest approach to winemaking and to life, he has spent decades choosing the best vineyards, and he has produced small batches of highly praised, soulful and, most of all, delicious wine.

PINE RIDGE vINEYARDS The desire to uncover and showcase the exceptional qualities of the diverse estate vineyards that span 200-acres across five appellations is the core of the Pine Ridge winemaking philosophy. A thirty-year relationship with the land brings a deeply layered knowledge of the specific climates, soils and vines of each vineyard. Every season brings new knowledge and understanding to apply and continuously fine tune the entire growing and production process in order to encourage the fruit—and the wines—a purity of flavor distinct to their site.

PRIDE MOUNTAIN vINEYARDS Pride Mountain Vineyards’ 83 vineyard acres drape across the gentle rolling crest of the Mayacamas Mountains some 2000 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley. Being on the mountaintop provides many of the vines with desirable southern exposures, which is unique for a Spring Mountain property. The elevation also puts Pride above the morning fog that often blankets the Sonoma and Napa Valleys, with the result that the vines are bathed in sunshine from dawn to dusk. During the growing season, the average temperature at Pride Mountain Vineyards is several degrees cooler than in the Napa Valley, which is beneficial to protecting the natural acidity of the grapes. The daily temperature fluctuations are also much smaller, with morning temperatures being considerably warmer and afternoon temperatures considerably cooler than in the Napa Valley. This results in gradual, steady ripening and long hang times.

RIDGE vINEYARDS While a great deal has been written about Ridge Vineyards, and the winery enjoys international acclaim among all California wines, they deserve even more praise. Their Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have helped define how those wines are viewed and have helped protect California’s great legacy vineyards. Their benchmark Cabernet, Monte Bello, exemplifies great single vineyard wine, as well as elegance allied with California power. Since the early 1960s Ridge has stood at the forefront of American wine, a track record of uninterrupted greatness that is unrivaled.

ROUND POND Round Pond Estate, owned and operated today by the second generation of the MacDonnell family, is a Rutherford farm and winery that specializes in the creation of pure, expressive wines, artisan foods and unforgettable experiences—all from the heart of Napa Valley. Because gourmet items are defined by their freshness, purity and the meticulous care that goes into making them, Round Pond strives to control every step of the process. The product of their estate vineyards, orchards, mill, and winery, every item Round Pond makes reflects the passionate, hands-on approach from soil to bottle.

SINEANN Sineann is a small producer of highly intense wines made from the finest grapes from the finest vineyards in the region. Almost all Sineann wines are single-vineyard designated, with low crop levels to ensure that the best characteristics of the varietal and terroir shine through. Peter Rosback has a meticulous approach to winemaking—minimal processing, aging in French oak—to help preserve the character of each wine. The result is wines in which both the winery and the growers take great pride. The bottom line is, Sineann strives to make great wine under the belief that food and drink, lovingly prepared, make for happier and healthier people.

SPOTTSWOODE ESTATE vINEYARD & WINERY Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the pre-prohibition Victorian home depicted on the wine label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts in 1910 and was acquired by Mary and Jack Novak in 1972. Mary released Spottswoode’s first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Today, Mary’s daughter Beth Novak Milliken manages the winery, and daughter Lindy Novak oversees national marketing. Every year four wines are released: Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon, and Field Book Syrah. The Novak family is committed to producing wines with integrity that faithfully reflect their grape origins, and Spottswoode wines are especially known for their refined elegance, balance and classic structure.

SPRING vALLEY The land that the Corkrum, Derby and Elvin families farm today is rich with history dating back to the mid 1800s, when current vineyard owner Shari Corkrum Derby’s grandfather Uriah Corkrum began farming in the area. Uriah experienced success farming in the 1880s but unfortunately lost everything in the first great depression of 1893. He persevered, though, and in 1910 acquired the land now known as Spring Valley. In 1993, Shari and Dean Derby planted the first grapes at Spring Valley. The first vintage of estate grown and bottled Spring Valley Vineyard wines were produced with the 1999 vintage. The Derby’s son Devin Corkrum Derby served as winemaker until his untimely death in 2004. Devin’s assistant and friend Serge Laville took over as winemaker and continues the legacy of Spring Valley Vineyard.

TABLAS CREEk vINEYARD Tablas Creek Vineyard is the result of a decades-long friendship between the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and Robert Haas, longtime importer and founder of Vineyard Brands. The families created a partnership in 1985 and in 1989 purchased a 120-acre property in the hilly Las Tablas district of west Paso Robles for its similarities to Châteauneuf du Pape: limestone soils, a favorable climate, and rugged terrain. The partners imported the traditional varietals grown on the Perrins’ celebrated estate, including Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Counoise for reds, and Roussanne, Viognier, Marsanne, and Grenache Blanc for whites. These imported vines passed a rigorous three-year USDA testing program, were propagated and grafted in our on-site nursery.
