I WANT TO CONGRATULATE THE FACULTY, STUDENTS, ALUMNI AND MANY FRIENDS OF SHAW HIGH SCHOOL AS
YOU MARK YOUR CENTENNIAL OF BECOMING A PART OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. FEW PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE SO LONG OR SO COLORFUL A HISTORY AS SHAW, FOUNDED AS THE SHAW ACADEMY IN THE 1830's UNDER A BEQUEST BY JOHN AND SARAH SHAW. THIS MILESTONE COMES AT A TIME WHEN OUR NATION IS MORE FIRMLY
We're In The Groove
COMMITTED THAN EVER TO EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION. EDUCATION HAS BEEN HONORED BY A CABINET POSITION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, SO I AM DOUBLY PLEASED TO WISH YOU SUCCESS AS WE BEGIN A NEW CENTURY IN EDUCATION TOGETHER. JIMMY CARTER

Academy Building Renovation
After 100 years Shaw High has only just hegun! Among the plans for the Cardinals is a total renovation of the Academy building. Students, faculty and administration were asked to "squeeze" into the Tech building, the Vocational Building, Prospect and the Annex after losing 23 classrooms.
Mr. Lloyd's office?!
Dr. Booker addresses the 1979 Conv ocation
The Chefs: S. Lloyd and M. Bassett cook fo r the alumni centennial celebration.
Continued: This meant a new time
schedule for most with seniors being dismissed at 1:04 and Freshmen sleeping in until 10:30. The renovation work began in September, 1979, with an anticipated completion date for the 1980-81 school year. All that is heard now in the Academy building is the sound of hammers and men at work gutting an old building that was held close in the hearts of many!
Class will come to order! not this year as the Academy building takes on a new look.

At Right: Rodney Butler 1979-1980 Homecoming King
The 1979-80 Homecoming King is as a lion reigning over his kingdom.
Rodney Butler, 1979-80 Homecoming King, had the following to say about being King:
I feel my responsibilities as HOMECOMING KING include just being myself. The title of Homecoming King means reigning over the Homecoming festivities. This is a responsibility that is understood. My personal responsibilities include helping to promote school spirit and pride. The public's eye will constantly be on me, therefore I must have and show a positive attitude toward my school and others. Since the responsibilities of Homecoming King are not written laws, they are really what you make them.
OUR QUEEN My responsibilities as
homecoming queen are to be congenial, have a positive attitude towards school and to maintain good grades.
When I ran for homecoming queen my main interest was not to
Ms. Annita Oliver.
win but to participate in an activity that I could enjoy and really step out of the crowd and be noticed as an individual.
I realize my responsibilities include not only what I did on Oct. 26, 1979, but also
Below right: Selma Gamble, Principal, presents the 1979-80 Homecoming Queen.
what I do throughout this 79-80 school year. I believe in Shaw High School and I, as the 1979-80 homecoming queen, will do all that I can to encourage a positive image among my classmates.

CAREER DAY
Shaw High School Students ask the representative from the Nursing Association about her career.
Norbert Conner ponders an engineering career with a representative from G.E.
Hundreds of local and national companies participated in the Fall, 1979, Career Day activities. Throughout the day the entire student body visited the gym and was given the opportunity of asking questions and gathering information about their career choices.
S.H.S. Band
As part of our 100 year Celebration the S.H.S. Band performed for the alumni present at Manakiki Country Club. Among the songs played were contemporary tunes and the alma mater. After their performance the band was treated to a lunch on the patio.

Every once in awhile we must pause ...
The tired Cardinals stop to rest during the high action of a football game.

In the mountain, stillness surges up to explore its own height; in the lake, movement stands still to contemplate its own depth.

Administrators Lead The W"ay
Dr. Rondle E. Edwards, Superintendent of schools.
(Above) Mr. Selma Gamble, Principal Shaw H1gh School.
(Above) Dr. Edwards with "future" Shaw students.
To this date, we have concerned ourselves with the mechanics of developing and implementing an effective educational curriculum at Shaw High School; however, there is a more vital element: The human element. No matter how eloquent the program, the students and teachers are the ones that determine whether or not it succeeds. The students and teachers at Shaw are to be commended for the way in which they accepted the adjustments to changes, yet continue to move forward. The1r ability and willingness to always strive for quality, places them a cut above the rest.
We the students, teachers, administrators, and parents must continue to view ourselves as part of a quality educational program. That is the only way we can expect others to view us in that same vein.
Selma Gamble Principal

Anticipation ... June 8, 1980
Seniors Angela Burrell and Eric: R eese prepare for graduation.
Andre Wright, "Smiley", waits to have his senior portrait taken.
Commencement When September came, Shaw High seniors began the
last and most exciting school year of all. The months were filled with studying for classes and writing that "research paper" for English. Senior pictures were taken at school in the auditorium for the first time ever, and as pictures were taken, seniors realized that June was not far away. Applications for colleges and the PSAT, and ACT were completed. And, just as we thought our last application was complete, there was one more for the Cleveland Scholarship Program! There was time, however, to establish new friendships and renew old ones. Plans were made for after graduation- weddings, jobs, college, and families. And on June 8, 1980, we real-ized what it was all for.
Marcia Alexander poses for a graduation picture.

Seniors Michael Watson, Myra Ancar, Mark Nunn, and Papse Wilson take time to relax between classes.
Harold Edmonds, Richard Dimbo, and Reginald Frazier, discover that being a senior means a lot of studying.
Senior Club president Rhonda Butler, and Annette Long listen intentively at a Senior Club meeting.

He also was able to witness some of second year athletes take the Lake Ene championship this season on the Jumor varsity level. The athletes get better every year at Shaw! Some of our most outstanding athletes this year were: Rinaldo Allen, one of the best receivers in the school: Robert Bailey, Don Shanks, David Leak, our most improved athletes: Anthony Bryson, Phil Galloway, Robert
Hazelhurst, our most dedicated athletes: ick Marshall and Michael Moore, our most competitive athletes: Enc Phillips, Michael Morrison, Pat Brandon, Sean Ward, who were the backbone of our defense; while Bob Thornton, Joe Mims, Daryl Sheppard and Shareef Deramus put the points on the board for us. When asked about this year's team, Coach ick responded, "I think it may be possible to try to be a patient and understanding coach and still experience some success - because NICE GUYS DO 'T HAVE TO FI ISH LAST!"

''A Very Spirited Group''
The Girl's Softball Team began practice March 1st. Their first game was April 7th at Normandy. The season's busy schedule consisted of 14 games. The girls must meet all eligibility requirements of the athletic department, and they find their time divided between practice and studies! All the softball games are played at Forest Hills Park. When asked to comment on the 1980 team, Coach Orr said, "Even though we don't always win, we have a very spirited group!"

Cheerleaders Being a cheerleader is
not all play! It entails a great deal of hard work and dedication. In the spring of the school year, approximately 50 anxious girls attend practice sessions to learn the cheers, chants, and dances. These girls are finally judged on the basis of their jumps, splits, cartwheels, cheers, chants, and smiles! From the contestants 24 are chosen. These new
cheerleaders practice approximately 3 days per week in preparation for the games. The ycheer for all football and basketball games. Each squad has a captain who is in charge of communication with others and also teaches new cheers. The SHAW HIGH CHEERLEADERS' major responsibility is to encourage CARDINAL SPIRIT.

This year's wrestling team could not boast any wins and ended their season with a 0-9 record. Despite the young team's losses (there are only 4 juniors and one senior on the team) there were still some bright moments. Darryl Shy has won three matches by decisions, and Coley Banks also won three matches by
Wrestlers pinning two of his opponents. A pin is an automatic win for the wrestler and requires that the opponent's shoulder blades be held on the mat for a two second count by the referee. On the other hand, a decision is determined by total points which are given according to what the wrestler does. For example, a
take-down scores two points while an escape only one point. Greg Page has won 2 decisions; George Davis one; and Morris Davis has one pin and one decision. Donald Shy has pinned one opponent. So despite a winless season Coach Range is optimistic for his young team and promises a brighter future.

McDonald Resigns Killian Named New Coach
The 79-80 Varsity Basketball team was plagued with problems during the regular season including the resignation of Coach McDonald and many losses.
Athletic Director Walt Killian was named new coach,
and he brings to the position experience and new ideas. He hopes to see a big difference in the team's performance. Coach Killian believes that the guys are better than their "worst season in history" headlines. It is difficult for a coach to come in at middle stream, but, fortunately, the team and new coach had help from former Coach McDonald and Mr. Bowman, J.V. coach.
When asked about his plans for the basketball program,
Coach Killian said that one of the changes he will make will be to run an off-season training program to keep the team in shape. Since this year's team does not have support from the student body, he hopes to give the Cardinal supporters a winning team, but says it would be "helpful to have support whether the team is losing or winning."

Shuttle The Shuttle Staff took a new and
different approach to their 144 page task for the 79 - 80 school yearbook. Inspite of their inexperience, they knew what was necessary to get the job done - hard work and dedication. The 15 member staff met deadlines, wrote copy and sold ads. The final deadline was Feb. 12 when the last page was mailed! Our hope is that you enjoy the '80 Shuttle.
