Eerie Music:Eerie music here is used tohighlight the woman and whatshe is doing. This could signifythat she is important, however,we nd out later that she's not. The eerie music creates tensionand makes the audience feel

uneasy. This creates anunsettling atmosphere, whichleads to foreshadow the endingand also a lot of the action thattakes place. Also, the fact thatnothing happens at the end ofthis scene, puts us into a falsesense of security believing that

since nothing happened thistime, nothing will happen nexttime, making everything a littleunexpected.

Chiaroscuro: This is used on her face. Thiscould symbolise the contrastin patients and the people whowork there how they'retreated! what they are like!how they see themselves! how

they see the world and howthey see each other. "t couldalso be used to symbolise thecontrast between oneself, andthe battles going on in onessubconscious, when su#eringfrom a mental issue, forexample, who Teddy thinks heis and who Teddy actually is.

Clothing: The clothing she is wearing are very old, and

don't look very clean. This could be because ofthe murky grey colour all patients are made towear, or because she is so mentally unwell thatshe is unable to look after herself properly. Thiscould be backed up by the state of her hair onher head. The use of the colour grey connotesmisery and depression. This could foreshadowthe reasoning$s as to why Teddy %aniel's isbeing Teddy, and why he cannot see the truth

about his past.

ECU/CU:A close up is used to focus all

attention clearly on her. %espite thefact that she is, in the end, a redherring, she is shown to be important, and the line across her neck makes uswonder who she is, and whathappened to her. This draws ourattention away from the main plotslightly, and means that all of thehints of the end are a lot more subtle,

and we pay less attention to them.

Body Posture:&ere, the scene shows Teddy %aniel'sslouching. ow, given his title as a highranking detective, he should be morealert, ready for anything. &is inability tobe prepared at this point causes theaudience to worry about him, and it

builds up a character( audiencerelationship. "t also puts forward the)uestion of whether or not he is as)ualied as we believe he is, and if he'snot, why not* This foreshadows theending.

The Storm: The storm which is forecast inthis scene could be a literalstorm, which it does become, but it can also be perceived in

a metaphorical way. The'storm' could refer to thechanges Teddy goes trough, and the damage that is leftbehind. "t could also refer tothe damage that was causedin the last storm, and thatalthough he has put his walls

back up and xed himself up,he hasn't done it in a way thatwill protect himself if another

Uniform: Throughout the lm, " believe thatuniform is a very important feature. "tseparates who is who and helps us todene what each character should belike, so that when they are not like that,it's noticeable. +hen Teddy and huck

lose their uniform, they become lessseparated from the people who arethere, and that's when the action kickso#. -niform symbolises the separationof people, and the di#erence in howthey act and treat each other.

Dramatic Angles:

The shot is taken from a low angle. This makesthe characters seem powerful and important. This is e#ective because, due to their highranking obs, they are powerful. "tdemonstrates the power they hold at the startof the lm, and di#erent camera shots willdemonstrate the gradual change in power, and will show Teddy's power levels throughout

the lm. This is important because it changesour opinion on the character, and thosearound him.

Long Shot: This has been used toshow the island at itsmost terrifying. "t shows ust how isolated it is,and how secluded themain two characters will

be. This alsoforeshadows thatsomething bad willhappen whilst they'rethere because it showsthe lack of escaperoutes. "f something badwere to happen, thecharacters would betrapped and isolated inthe prison.

Chiaroscuro: This has been used to show theclear contrast between the

blue sea and sky, and theisland. The sky shows a niceday, re/ected on the sea in afairly pleasant way. This couldforeshadow that soon, theywon't look so pleasant, whenthe storm hits. "t also denesthe island and makes it themain focus of the screen. The

characters are headed there, and we know they are.

The Sea: The sea pretty much foreshadows the whole of the ending. Teddy%aniel's turns out to actually be a patient at the mental asylum, because he shot his wife. &e did this because she drowned their threechildren in a lake. This makes the sea very important. 0ike the islandis surrounded by sea trying to invade the island, Teddy is surroundedby memories of his kids trying to ght his new, fake identity.

Multile Lines of Action:At this point in the plot, it switches between theboat pulling into the island, and Teddy and huckon the boat. This is to show the reaction of both Teddy and huck, seeing if all is as it should be. To begin with, we may think nothing of it, but aswe watch it, we realise the reactions were not asnormal as we may have trusted they should be. This is used to emphasise the foreshadowingused in this scene of the lm.

The !oman: The woman in this scene is his dead wife. &eknows she is dead, but hallucinates her up alot. This is ust one indication to the fact thathe is truly cra1y. The fact that she is fallingapart could indicate the mass trauma he

went through, and show that his heart isnow ust dust 2 like her.

The "ouse: The house is being ripped up and turned toashes. This could be used to foreshadow theconfusion he is going through. That is hisworld, and it's falling apart in front of him. "think it's being used to demonstrate how

being in the mental asylum is tearing hisworld 2 or what he thinks his world is 2apart.

Lo# $ey Lighting: The house, and everything in it, is a dullcolour. Even the light has a very dull glow, nothing too powerful or bright. This could beindicating how his life is now dull andgloomy, and there's nothing bright in it to lifthis spirits any more. &e does his ob, he

survives through life, but that is all.

%acial E&ressions:"n this scene, Teddy's facial expression ispained and he doesn't care if he gets theashes of his crumbing wife all over him. &eis ust determined to hold onto her, andmake every moment last longer. The deadwife has a very blank expression on herface, she is dead, and she wants Teddy to

accept this.

Lo# $ey Lighting: This sets the scene. Teddy is wandering through +ard 2 lledwith the most dangerous patients in the asylum. The place is verydull mutual colours, the only exception being the green, whichadds some colour to it, but also makes it seem very militari1ed.

This suggests the people kept here are very dangerous, and

emphasises the idea of needed guns on site.

'(er)E&aggerated Sounds:3ounds such as footsteps, dripping, doors creaking and chains rattling areover(exaggerated in this scene. This is to add a tense atmosphere, anddemonstrate how Teddy is feeling. The audience then gets a feel for the

tension Teddy is feeling, but also his fear. 3ubconsciously, he fears thisplace as it is where he usually stays, as he is Andrew 0aites. &e, however, doesn't know this, because he has created Teddy for him to be, but he stillfeels very anxious, probably more than would be expected, which ise#ective, because it makes the audience worry for, and also root for him, hoping he'll reveal what he knows. -nfortunately, they are unaware hedoesn't consciously know the answer to their )uestions.

*ed "erring:A man umps out and says 4Tag,you're it56 to Teddy and huck.

This is e#ective because Teddychases after him, causing theaudience to believe he is a veryimportant part of the story. Theychase him all over the ward, before he strangles Teddy and

Teddy beats him up. Thisdemonstrates Teddy'suncontrollable side, and the factthat he is in +ard highlightsthat, however, the man whotagged them is irrelevant to thelm, and only buys Teddy sometime alone in +ard to re/ect onhis days there. 7ne man who isimportant, however, is the man in

the cell he speaks to. &e says lotsof confusing things, but putsforward the idea that Teddy isAndrew 0aites in a very subtleway. +e think that the things hesays are said because he is acra1y man, annoyed at Teddy forrummaging les on 3hutter"sland, because now the man willnever leave, much like Teddy

himself. &e then mentions how Teddy had never met his partnerbefore, and we begin to growsuspicious of everyone but Teddy, which in itself is a red herring.

Bright Lighting: This sets the scene. Teddy is in a good mood. &e has not began to doubt himself orthose around him. &e is completely wrapped in his better life. "t is not the perfect life 2his wife is dead and the man who is responsible got away with it, but at least he is afully functioning man who isn't su#ering due to the madness of his wife and the loss ofhis three children, or so he thinks.

Uniforms: The uniforms of the people witnessing are white. This could be to show their blank, irrelevant personalities, and make them blend into the background. They areunnecessary characters. Teddy's uniform is of very similar colours to the person theyare interviewing. This could be to indicate that actually, they are both e)uals, both fromthe asylum, and Teddy is not as superior as he thought. This is another foreshadow tothe end plot point. This is also reinforced by hucks dark suit. The colours completelycontrast that of the background workers, showing he is important, but also, the fact

that he is the only one to be wearing that colour suggests that although he may call Teddy 4boss6, maybe he is the true boss8 is higher up than Teddy.

Misdirection: Throughout theseinterviews, Teddysees that theinmates seem to behiding something. At rst it seems likethey're hidingsomething from the

observers, but thenthe woman sendshuck away andwrites in Teddy'snotebook. Thisindicates that huckis not to be trusted, and that the placeis working against

 Teddy, trying to

kidnap him to dobrain tests on, likethey supposedly didwith the escapee.

Dramatic Angles: These are used toshow the interviewsin a more exciting

way. The angles usedshow the room in alldi#erent directions, but what'sinteresting in thisshot is how thecamera is angles sothe height di#erencebetween huck and

 Teddy is made very

clear, and it showshuck to be ofgreater importance, maybe to Teddy, maybe to the mentalasylum, or maybe

ust in general, wedon't know yet, but itdoes foreshadow theending of the lm,showing Teddy as alower being thanhuck.

Police +uard: The police guard is interestingly placed in thisshot. Although we assume the police guard is

where he is because he is guarding the patient Teddy and huck are interviewing, it could beseen that he is actually guarding Teddy, whichforeshadows the end. This is an importantthing to notice, because it shows ust howdangerous Teddy really is, and emphasises thewhole idea of taking his gun, making himfollow protocol 2 he is watched always.

The Plaster on his "ead: This arises many )uestions +hat is theplaster* +hy is it there* +hat has he done*

+hen did he do it* This could be an indicationof the ght he had with a man because hesaid he was 0aites, or ust a red herring, usedfor e#ect and to make the lm moreinteresting. "n this particular shot, it is verynoticeable and this could emphasise howdangerous he is, highlighting issues raisedabout his mental health throughout the entire

lm.

,To li(e as a monster or to die as agood man-.:

This is from right at the end of the lm. Teddy hasbeen told who he really is, what he has done, what hehas been through, and how if he doesn't learn toaccept this, he will go through brain surgery, removing

who he is from his brain, creating a sort of 'empty'body. &e then alerts someone very important that heknows who he is, etc, and he is told that he made thisprogress once before, and then regressed again. Theending shows him having regressed again, and as heis being taken to get the brain surgery, he turns tohuck and says 49ou know, this place makes mewonder... +hich would be worse* To live as a monster

or to die as a good man* This puts forward thesuggestion that he hasn't regressed. &e has decidedthat he would rather die as a good man, as Teddy%aniel's, a man who lost his wife in a re, rather thanto live as a monster, as Andrew 0aites, a man whoshot his wife who he loved dearly.

Uniform: The uniform Teddy is wearing isold and dirty. "t is not the outtof a detective, but it stilldoesn't sway his knowledge ofwho he thinks he is. Also, huck's outt has changed. &ehas got a more expensive suiton, with a green tie. &is hair iscombed back, and he looksmore like a psychologist than adetective. These emphasise theidea that Teddy does actually

know who he really is, but ishiding it, so he can 'die as agood man.'

%acial E&ressions:"n this shot, Teddy's facial expression isvery serious and on task. This portrayshow strongly he believes in the lies hehas woven into his own mind. The ideathat they are lies comes from the facialexpression his partner is pulling at him.&e is looking at Teddy like Teddy hassome serious issues 2 which he does,

but we don't know it yet. This helps toforeshadow the ending, where we ndout about what is indicated. huckalmost seems like an adult, ust playingalong with a child's elaborate game, fullof surprises and ever(changing rules, which demonstrates ust how bad

 Teddy's issues are.

Dramatic Angles: This shot shows a low angle shot of Teddy %aniels. This is e#ectivebecause it shows him as the powerful detective we believe him tobe. This keeps us hooked to the idea that he is in fact a detective, and keeps us from guessing and ruining the plot twist at the end.Another thing which emphasises this idea, is the way in which hisbadge is subtly revealed. A badge, especially one like Teddy's, is asymbol of power and so this suggests that he is the most powerfulcharacter here, and that that is how he plans to keep it. "f anyonewere to )uestion him, or his authority, he would be able to simplyshow them his badge and all would be sorted.

%ocus:

Chiaroscuro: This shot shows Teddy with a very bright, lit up side of his face, and a dark gloomy side ofhis face. This is the moment in the lm where he's ust been alerted to his true identity, and the two contrasting shades of colour on his face could be an indication to how he isfeeling he has ust realised part of him is very dark and is dying to come out, and the

other side is Teddy %aniels, still ghting to stay the more dominant side of 0eonardo,because it is his most preferred side. "t could also be portraying how he has managed tokeep himself in the dark for so long, believing that he is not Andrew 0aites, but is in fact Teddy, but now he has been told the truth, he is beginning to see the light 2 whichrepresents the truth behind who he is, and why everyone has been so secretive aroundhim.

%ocus: The focus of thisshot is on Teddyalone. This isdone by blurringout thebackground 2the people are

still there, ustnot obviously 2but also with theuse of cigarettesmoke. This isdone so theaudiencefocuses solely on

Teddy, witnessing thechange in him,and due to thefact that theyhave created ahigh level ofempathy for him, this is very

powerful. Theysee him becomethe mad manthey neverexpected him tobe.
