Formally known as Shueili Keng (cove), Shueili Township is located in a mountainous area of Nantou County near the geographical center of Taiwan. It covers an area of approximately 106.57 square kilometers at an elevation of 250 meters and above, with a population of about 22,000. The Shueili and Chenyoulan rivers run through this area before meeting up with the Jhuoshuei River, creating ample water resources for the Daguan and Mingtan hydropower plants. During the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), the camphor, sugar and hydropower industries developed, attracting more and more people to Shueili. From the end of World War II until the 1970's the success of a diversity of industries including timber, bananas, ceramics, oranges and plums lead to increasing prosperity for this area. Due to the demand for the transportation of goods and materials, including timber and those required for the construction of the hydropower plants, the Jiji small-gauge railway line was built, and still exists today as a major tourist attraction. Around the Checheng train station, it is still possible to see traces of the once flourishing timber industry. Other area attractions include Erpingshan with its cool breezes and night views of the city lights below. The Yongsing Suspension Bridge has preserved its appearance over the past 40 years, but at night it takes on a modern glow due to the addition of colorful lights. The banks of the Shueili River and near the Guanyin Suspension Bridge are good places for enjoying the crystal clear waters of this area. At Snake Kiln in Shueili's Dingkan Village try your hand at making your own ceramic art works. Plums, popsicles and glutinous rice and meat patties are some of the foods to try while in Shueili. The area's major agricultural products include grapes, litchis, bananas, tea and bamboo shoots. As Shueili is a small town located in a mountainous area, it does not have a comprehensive transportation system. It is recommended that after arriving in Shueili by car, train or bus, that you rent a scooter or bicycle to leisurely explore the area. The Yushan National Park Headquarters and Shueili Visitor Center are located on the perimeter of the northwestern section of the national park. This location is also a plateau overlooking the confluence of the Shueili and Jhuoshuei rivers, and surrounded by picturesque mountains and hills. The natural scenery of Shueili is worth taking the time to appreciate. But, also make sure to visit the visitor center exhibitions to gain a better understanding of the natural environment and ecology that you will experience upon entering Yushan National Park. The hospitable people of Shueili and the staff of the Yushan National Park Headquarters welcome you.
