Formally known as Shueili Keng (cove), Shueili Townshipis located in a mountainous area of Nantou County near thegeographical center of Taiwan. It covers an area ofapproximately 106.57 square kilometers at an elevation of 250meters and above, with a population of about 22,000. TheShueili and Chenyoulan rivers run through this area beforemeeting up with the Jhuoshuei River, creating ample waterresources for the Daguan and Mingtan hydropower plants.
During the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), thecamphor, sugar and hydropower industries developed, attracting more and more people to Shueili. From the end ofWorld War II until the 1970's the success of a diversity ofindustries including timber, bananas, ceramics, oranges andplums lead to increasing prosperity for this area. Due to thedemand for the transportation of goods and materials, includingtimber and those required for the construction of thehydropower plants, the Jiji small-gauge railway line was built, and still exists today as a major tourist attraction.
Around the Checheng train station, it is still possible to seetraces of the once flourishing timber industry. Other areaattractions include Erpingshan with its cool breezes and nightviews of the city lights below. The Yongsing SuspensionBridge has preserved its appearance over the past 40 years, butat night it takes on a modern glow due to the addition ofcolorful lights. The banks of the Shueili River and near theGuanyin Suspension Bridge are good places for enjoying thecrystal clear waters of this area. At Snake Kiln in Shueili'sDingkan Village try your hand at making your own ceramic artworks. Plums, popsicles and glutinous rice and meat patties aresome of the foods to try while in Shueili. The area's majoragricultural products include grapes, litchis, bananas, tea andbamboo shoots. As Shueili is a small town located in amountainous area, it does not have a comprehensivetransportation system. It is recommended that after arriving inShueili by car, train or bus, that you rent a scooter or bicycle toleisurely explore the area.
The Yushan National Park Headquarters and ShueiliVisitor Center are located on the perimeter of the northwesternsection of the national park. This location is also a plateauoverlooking the confluence of the Shueili and Jhuoshuei rivers, and surrounded by picturesque mountains and hills. The naturalscenery of Shueili is worth taking the time to appreciate. But,also make sure to visit the visitor center exhibitions to gain abetter understanding of the natural environment and ecologythat you will experience upon entering Yushan National Park. The hospitable people of Shueili and the staff of the YushanNational Park Headquarters welcome you.
