Marking, Moderaon and Verificaon Guidance - CV19 March 2020 The following statements apply to student assessment that will receive a percentage mark, pass/fail mark or grade band. 1. All assessment tasks should be verified internally before being published to students. This should be on a ‘by excepon’ basis. If the assessment task remains substanally the same the verificaon is not required. For changes made in response to the CV19 disrupon, Head of Department approval can be considered as internal verificaon. Heads of Department should approve all changes. 2. For substanally changed assessment tasks that contribute to the classificaon of an award and that would constute a formal modificaon, informaon should be shared with external examiners in advance and any comments recorded. External Examiners will be asked to raise any issues within 3 working days, otherwise support for the changes will be assumed. These significant assessment changes require sign off from the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning, who will liaise with colleagues in Academic Administraon and AQS as required. 3. All student work should be marked by an appropriately experienced member of staff. There is no university requirement that all Dissertaons or major projects need to be doubled marked, a sample should be selected as per the guidance for internal moderaon below. 4. Where there are mulple markers on a module the norm is that a standardisaon exercise should be undertaken to ensure consistency between markers. During the current CV19 disrupon this should be done by a small random sample to determine if further standardisaon is required. Markers should share an example of a low, medium and high achieving piece of marked work early in the assessment period. 5. University policy is that all first-sit assessed student work should be internally moderated. This involves providing a sample of work represenng all classificaon bands to an internal moderator, across a range of markers where relevant, not less than 10% and not more than 20% of the cohort. The internal moderator will then check that marking and feedback is broadly consistent and has been carried out in accordance with the validated descriptor (taking into consideraon any recent CV19 changes). Following internal moderaon, marks can be submied to the Departmental Assessment Board. 6. An appropriate representave sample of first-sit assessed student work that contributes to the classificaon of an award should be externally moderated. This involves providing a sample of work represenng all classificaon bands to an external moderator, across a range of markers where relevant, not less than 10% and not more than 20% of the cohort. The external moderator will then check that marking and feedback is broadly consistent and has been carried out in accordance with the validated descriptor (taking into consideraon any recent CV19 changes). Marking, Moderation and Verification Guidance - CV19March 2020

The following statements apply to student assessment that will receive a percentage mark, pass/fail mark or grade band.

1. All assessment tasks should be verified internally before being published to students. This should be on a ‘by exception’ basis. If the assessment task remains substantially the same the verification is not required. For changes made in response to the CV19 disruption, Head of Department approval can be considered as internal verification. Heads of Department should approve all changes.

2. For substantially changed assessment tasks that contribute to the classification of an award and that would constitute a formal modification, information should be shared with external examiners in advance and any comments recorded. External Examiners will be asked to raise any issues within 3 working days, otherwise support for the changes will be assumed. These significant assessment changes require sign off from the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning, who will liaise with colleagues in Academic Administration and AQS as required.

3. All student work should be marked by an appropriately experienced member of staff. There is no university requirement that all Dissertations or major projects need to be doubled marked, a sample should be selected as per the guidance for internal moderation below.

4. Where there are multiple markers on a module the norm is that a standardisation exercise should be undertaken to ensure consistency between markers. During the current CV19 disruption this should be done by a small random sample to determine if further standardisation is required. Markers should share an example of a low, medium and high achieving piece of marked work early in the assessment period.

5. University policy is that all first-sit assessed student work should be internally moderated. This involves providing a sample of work representing all classification bands to an internal moderator, across a range of markers where relevant, not less than 10% and not more than 20% of the cohort. The internal moderator will then check that marking and feedback is broadly consistent and has been carried out in accordance with the validated descriptor (taking into consideration any recent CV19 changes). Following internal moderation, marks can be submitted to the Departmental Assessment Board.

6. An appropriate representative sample of first-sit assessed student work that contributes to the classification of an award should be externally moderated. This involves providing a sample of work representing all classification bands to an external moderator, across a range of markers where relevant, not less than 10% and not more than 20% of the cohort. The external moderator will then check that marking and feedback is broadly consistent and has been carried out in accordance with the validated descriptor (taking into consideration any recent CV19 changes). AQS will review External Examiner reports and if no substantive issues have been raised will recommend to the Head of Department and Associate Dean Teaching and Learning that the mark is accepted by the DAB. A full record of this will need to be kept and the External Examiner invited to review and sample retrospectively (though the initial mark awarded will stand in all cases).

7. Assessed work, feedback and provisional marks may be returned to students following standardisation and internal moderation but prior to external moderation being completed. All marks are subject to confirmation by the relevant Assessment Board. The ‘subject to confirmation by the Assessment Board' status of marks should be made clear to students.

8. Wherever possible if an External Examiner is not able to engage in moderation then other Externals associated with the Department should be asked to engage. It is recognised that they may not have the same detailed subject perspective, but they will have familiarity with the subject itself and will understand subject conventions (e.g. marking ranges in science or mathematically based subjects vs. qualitative disciplines).

9. Referral and deferral work submitted by students does not need to be internally or externally moderated unless there is a PSRB requirement to do so.

10. The requirements set out in the 'Collaborative Partners' annex to this policy should be met for modules delivered by collaborative partners (see Annex 1).

Marking and 3-week turnaround

1. 3-week turn aroundStaff should continue to work to the 3-week turn around. However, during this time, we respect the need to support flexible working. Where staff are not able to work to the 3- week turnaround they should notify the HoD with the reason, agree a new return date and ensure that this is communicated directly to the students affected.

2. MarkingAssessment and corresponding marking criteria should be adjusted to account for lost learning and lost access to specialist equipment / software.

3. Adjustments / scalingReview of reports meetings (pre-DABs) should scrutinise marks / profiles, compare with previous achievement trends and make any recommendations to the Assessment Board for scaling. This requires approval by ADTL.
