Member Capacity TablesThe following tables give the axial tension capacity andcompression resistance for British Steel Tubes and Pipescold formed structural hollow sections to EN 10219 for usewith limit state methods of design.

Section Properties/Grade AvailabilityThe sectional properties used in these tables are in accor-dance with EN 10219. For further information on Sectionalproperties and grade availability see TD 402 & TD403.

Design StrengthThe material design strength has been taken as theminimum value of yield strength in accordance with EN 10219.

Resistance and CapacitiesThe basis of calculation is taken as ENV 1993-1-1 in conjunction with the UK NAD. The values have been calculated using the material design strength and a gm =1.05 and for the compression capacity design strut curve ‘C’.

For other European countries the capacities or resistancescan be calculated by application of the appropriate gm factoras follows:

Note: the gm (country) factor will be the box value in ENV1993-1-1 of 1.1 or the factor taken from the NAD (NationalApplication Document) for the appropriate country.

Section ClassificationThe section classification has been taken in accordancewith ENV 1993-1-1 in respect to the limits for class 3 andslender sections. For RHS which are found to be slenderthe area has been reduced in accordance with theeffective area method of ENV 1993-1-1. For CHS slendersections a stress reduction factor in accordance with BS 5950: Part 1 has been applied as no method isincluded in the Eurocode.

Slenderness RatioIn accordance with the limits for slenderness imposed by theUK NAD to ENV 1993-1-1 the values in the tables areshaded when the slenderness ratio of the section is between180 and 250 and between 250 and 350.

Designation

Examples:a) A cold formed circular hollow section of 114.3mm outsidediameter and 6.3mm thick in grade S275J2H is designated:114.3 x 6.3 EN 10219 S275J2H.

b) A cold formed rectangular hollow section of 100mm x 50mm sides and 4.0mm thick in grade S355J2His designated 100 x 50 x 4.0 EN 10219 S355J2H.

Due to the fact that steel designations are the same across different product types it is essential, when specifying or orderingcold formed hollow sections that all references should include the number of the European standard.
