November 14, 2010 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Christ the King Next Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. It is the last Sunday of Ordinary Time, and the last Sunday of the
2010 Liturgical Year.
Pope Pius XI universally instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925 in his encyclical Quas Primas. Pope Pius connected the denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism. At that time secularism was
on the rise, and many Christians, even Catholics, were doubting Christ's authority, as well as the Church's, and even doubting Christ's existence. Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of dictatorships in Europe, and saw Catholics
being taken in by these earthly leaders. Just as the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted when devotion to the Eucharist was at a low point, the Feast of Christ the King was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the
feast was most needed. In fact, it is still needed today, as these problems have not vanished, but instead have worsened.
Individualism has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority
is the individual self. The idea of Christ as ruler is rejected in such a strongly individualistic system. Also, many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be oppressive. Some even reject the titles of "lord" and "king" for Christ because they
believe that such titles are borrowed from oppressive systems of government. What would they suggest in place of Christ the .LQJ ´&KULVW RXU 'HPRFUDWLFDOO\ (OHFWHG

must be careful not to minimize the vast difference between the human and divine. Christ the anointed one is more than
king, He is more than supreme ruler, He is the Son of God. And on the last Sunday of the Church Liturgical Year we acknowledge that Christ is above all. The very next Sunday, November 28, we begin the new Liturgical Year of 2011 with Advent, longing for the coming of the Messiah, Christ our Lord and King.

New Missal The Vatican has issued the final text of the Roman Missal, Third Edition, the ritual text containing prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass, for the Dioceses of the United States of America. First use of the new text of the new Roman
Missal will be on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. Over the course of the next year you will be hearing more and more about this change.
New Words: A Deeper Meaning, but the Same Mass Pope John Paul II promulgated the third edition of the Roman Missal during the Jubilee Year in 2000. Among other things, the third edition contains prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Intentions, and some
updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. In 2007, the Congregation for Divine Worship issued the Ratio Translationis for the English Language, which outlined the specific rules for translation in English.

Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak Kodiak turned 8 months on November 8 and he weighed in at about 115 pounds. On Friday a week ago, I gave him a bath at the local dog scrubber place. I am so relieved
that no one was there to take pictures or make a video. I think there was more dog shampoo on me than on him. We got through it and had a lot of fun doing it. Rosie goes to a groomer, but that is because she is a girl. Girls go
to beauty shops, boys just take a bath.

Mass Intentions Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "But the Eucharistic Christ does more than
restrain our sinful tendencies. In union with the
Holy Spirit, whose temples we are, He expands the
soul's facilities so that it may be conformed to His
image as He gradually unfolds Himself to its
enraptured gaze."
- Fr. John Kane
"Because God rules man by love, He has made him
free. How we use our freedom will determine our progress in
virtue. If our wills are, in every event of life, one with the will of
the indwelling God, we are standing on the rock foundation
of holiness and perpetual self-renunciation; we are free with
'the freedom wherewith Christ has made us free.'"

never a bad time to discuss this disease.
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in American
women, second only to skin cancer. The American Cancer
Society estimates that in 2008, 182,460 American women will be
diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,480 American women will
lose their lives because of breast cancer. In spite of these
statistics, many women are being kept in the dark about a
preventable risk factor of breast cancer: abortion. Due to the
politics surrounding abortion, many organizations are afraid to
speak out about the link between abortion and breast cancer.
When a woman becomes pregnant her body begins to go
through biological changes in order to prepare for childbirth.
Increased levels of estrogen during pregnancy cause a

for milk production. By the time of a full-term birth these cells
have differentiated into milk producing tissue and have stopped
multiplying. These cells are resistant to cancer because they
have been differentiated into a specific type of cell and cell
multiplication process has been stopped. If a woman has an
abortion before her 3rd trimester of pregnancy, her breasts are
left with more undifferentiated cells that are more vulnerable to
cancer than if she had never been pregnant. Twenty-nine out
of 38 worldwide studies dating back to 1957 show that abortion
LQFUHDVHVDZRPDQ·VULVNRIJHWWLQJEUHDVWFDQFHUODWHULQOLIH,Q
studies done on women from the United States, 13 out of 16,
show an increased risk of breast cancer associated with
abortion. (Right to Life of Michigan ² www.rtl.org)
It cannot be said that all women who have breast cancer have had abortions. Similarly, not all women who have had abortions will get breast cancer. Nevertheless, abortion is the most preventable risk factor for breast cancer. If you have an
opportunity to have a conversation with someone who is pro-abortion, maybe you need to ask them if they realize that women DUHQRWEHLQJWROGRI WKHVLGHHIIHFWVDQGULVNV WRD´VXUJHU\µWKH\
are undertaking. In addition to breast cancer, other risks include: increased risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide, increased risk of placenta previa and pre-term birth in later pregnancies,
complications such as hemorrhaging, uterine perforation, and infection and even death. There are multiple victims with every abortion. Grade School Happenings
Spanish
Things are busy in Spanish classes this fall! The kindergartners are talking about their pets, specifically perros and gatos (dogs and cats). Soon we will be expanding our vocabulary to fish and hamsters too. Also, we continue to focus on a different color every FODVV SHULRG 7KLV SDVW ZHHN·V ZRUN FHQWHUHG RQ
Amarillo (yellow).
The first graders are creating books about Mexico. We have studied the flag, clothing, and customs of Mexico. Their books summarize all that they are learning.
Second graders have been working very hard on the Spanish alphabet. This is a difficult task but they are almost finished! The Spanish alphabet contains 30
letters, thus creating more of a challenge. Still, the second graders have done quite well tackling this difficult chore.
The third graders have been discussing the family. They have learned vocabulary to describe all members of their families. This was illustrated in the family trees that they created. Soon all the third graders will be telling stories about La Familia Perez, a family who lives in Mexico.
The fourth graders have been drilling and memorizing the days of the week and the months of the year in Spanish. They learned that the Spanish months are very similar to the months in English. This has lead to interesting discussions about the origin of our languages. It is encouraging to witness the

answers to their questions.
Memorizing the first half of the Our Father has kept the fifth graders very busy. They say it at the beginning of every class. In January they will learn the second half of the prayer, which should go smoothly after seeing how quickly they achieved success with the first part.
Finally, our sixth graders are getting ready to create and present short skits in Spanish class. These skits are a tool to assist them in using the Spanish language both orally and in writing. The students are excited to get started with their writing and acting. There seems to be much creativity and individuality in this grade. Should be fun!
