Steere House Recognizes Richard J. DeRienzo and LGC&D
Steere House is pleased to announce that Richard J. DeRienzo and LGC&D are this year’s Steere House Legacy Award Recipi-
ents and Autumn’s Promise Honorees. Known for their efforts to make volunteerism and community service a way of life and doing business, Rich and LGC&D embody the spirit of the Steere House Legacy Award. Rich is the Managing Partner of LGC&D. He is also a former Chair of both the Leadership Rhode Island Board of Governors and the Greater Provi-dence YMCA Board of Directors and Trustees. Rich serves as Chair of the Beacon Mutual Insurance Company Board of Directors. He is a recipient of the Rhode Island Health Care Association Distin-guished Service Award and serves in numerous leadership capacities with philanthropic organizations. Rich’s philanthropic contribu-tions are indicative of the LGC&D culture. LGC&D has a history of firm-wide vol-unteer traditions, including their 25-year history of preparing Thanksgiving meals to feed the home-less in Providence with St. Michael’s Church and
eight years of participation in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Walk. In addition, many senior staff members have been instrumental in the inception and long term leadership of a variety of organizations. LGC&D is known for its dedication to devoting the time and resources of the firm and its people to great causes that help our community.
Prior to his current role, Rich served as a partner at Laventhol & Horwath, the predecessor firm of LGC&D. With over thirty-five years of experience in the field, he’s built an extensive list of specialties and areas of expertise. He is a Bry-ant University graduate, where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration and an M.S. in Taxation. In addition, Rich completed a Corporate Entre-preneurship Program at Babson College.
It was in November of 1990 when LGC&D’s original part-ners, Jerry Lefkowitz, Steve Garfinkel, Frank Champi, Jerry Dorfman, Peter Mezei and Rich, purchased the practice from Lav-enthol & Horwath. While the early years were challenging, the firm enjoyed tremendous sup-port from clients and staff. Over the years, LGC&D added ten principals and has grown to over eighty people. Today LGC&D is the fifth largest firm in Rhode Is-
land by the number of CPAs. Rich and his wife, Carol call Barrington, Rhode Island home. He and the entire LGC&D family believe that Rhode Island is a great place to work and live and they remain committed to be-ing an active part of the business and community landscape for years to come. Reflecting, Rich said, “We know that when we serve the greater good, we are among many beneficiaries.”

2014 Steere House Legacy Award
A Letter from the Executive DirectorJulie H. RichardNHA, MA
The sun is shining brightly in the sky. Warm, fresh air is caressing your face as it comes through the open window.
And the local scenery whizzes by as your vehicle carries you down the road. The beauty of a road trip is hitting all of your senses. Now imagine that you could share that feeling with someone. Steere House is kicking off our 2014 Annual Appeal Campaign and this year’s campaign offers you an opportunity to share that special road trip feeling with Steere House residents and patients. This year, Steere House is dedicating our Annual Appeal fund dollars to the purchase of a four-passenger lift van. The new van will replace our 1991 Ford lift van, which has miles of memories on it, but unfortunately can no longer meet our needs. The new van’s seating and wheel chair accommodation will allow us to take small groups of residents on Activity Department planned outings, such as a ballgame at McCoy Stadium or a performance at PPAC and spontaneous trips, like an ice cream run, as well as to needed medical appointments. Access to a reliable, comfortable van provides opportunities to expand Steere House life beyond our facility walls and add just that something special to someone’s day. Initial cost estimates for a van are approximately $50,000. Due to the van’s high cost, we anticipate that it may take longer than a year for us to raise the funds needed, but won’t you start helping us today by making a gift? Together, we can fulfill the Steere House promise.

Calendar of EventsKameny Lectureship Set for September 23rd
The 2014 Pearl Kameny Lectureship in Geriatric Medicine will be held on Tuesday, September 23rd. Now in its 14th year, the Lectureship is held annually for medical staff and clinicians at Lifespan hospitals; Steere House staff; students,
residents and fellows of Brown University School of Medicine; and CareLink members. Albert L. Siu, MD, MSPH will be this year’s featured speaker. Dr. Siu is the Ellen and Howard C. Katz Chairman’s Chair and Professor of the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, and Director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at the Bronx VA Medical Center. Read more about Dr. Siu on www.steerehouse.org. The Lecture will be held at 8:00 a.m., George Auditorium, Rhode Island Hospital.
Steere House would like to acknowledge the Directors of the Fred M. Roddy Foundation for their consideration and
approval of our grant request to help acquire and install our electronic medical records (EMR) system. Earlier this year, the Founda-tion awarded Steere House $25,000, which with the system hardware installed, allowed Steere House to focus on efforts to implement the system and conduct staff training. A sig-nificant portion of training costs were paid for with the Foundation’s grant funds. With the EMR system of communication now in place, it is delivering improved efficiency, clarity and coordination in ways Steere House, our resi-dents and patients will benefit from for many years to come.
Steere House is pleased to formally an-nounce that Lisa Ballantyne, BSW has joined Steere House as our Marketing/
Admission Coordinator. Lisa comes to Steere House after serving as Administrator of Arbor Hill Assisted Living in Providence. For more than thirty years, Lisa has worked in acute care, assisted living communities, and long-term care settings with extensive experience in social work, community relations, admissions and ad-ministration. Lisa says she hopes to use her experience to enrich the lives of the elderly and physically challenged. She holds a BSW in Social Work from Rhode Island College and her Assisted Living Certification. Lisa and her family live in Cumberland, Rhode Island.

A Letter from the Executive DirectorJulie H. RichardNHA, MA
At this time of year, I have to admit that my sights are set on the coming of a picturesque New England Fall.
Although summer stills holds the promise of more “fun in the sun”, excitement is building here for our Autumn’s Promise Dinner and Auction, slated for Friday evening, October 17th. Please plan to join us. I am particularly excited as Richard DeRienzo and LGC&D are our Steere House Legacy Award Recipients and Autumm’s Promise Honorees this year. Rich is a good friend to Steere House and greater Providence community. His participation in various capacities at area non-profits is a shining example of not only what the Legacy Award is all about, but also what LGC&D instills in their corporate culture – one which encourages everyone to give back. Their efforts are worthy of recognition and Steere House considers them fitting recipients. The night is also important as it will be another way that all of us can participate and support our latest initiative. As you are aware, this year’s Annual Appeal is dedicated to raising funds to purchase a passenger lift van. The new van will replace our 1991 Ford lift van, which unfortunately can no longer serve our needs. In support of that effort, we are dedicating our annual Fund The Need Auction to this important initiative. Access to a reliable, comfortable van provides opportunities to expand Steere House life beyond our facility walls and adds just that something special to someone’s day. So join me at 7 o’clock at the Providence Marriott Downtown Hotel, 1 Orms Street. It will be an evening that will surely be remembered for a wonderful time, for a wonderful cause. I hope to see you there.
