Govt. keen to start ferry services in NorthEast states

Shipping and Tourism Ministry to set up committee for coastal tourism

Infra developing in 15 identified tourism circuits: Govt to Lok Sabha

10 monuments will remain open till 9 pm for public: Patel

The government said that it is keen to start inland waterways navigation and passenger transportation in North Eastern states.

Public sector company WAPCOS is preparing a model detailed project report for implementing projects for running low-cost ferry services in the inland waterways in these states, Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in a statement.

“The Ministry of Shipping is keen to start inland waterways navigation and passenger transportation in the rivers in

the North Eastern states of the country,” he said. This model DPR can be adopted for quick implementation by the Inland Waterways Authority of India in consultation with the different state governments in the region, the statement said.

Mandaviya also said that inland waterways transport can be a game changer for the North Eastern states as land routes here are often long, circuitous and time consuming due to the difficult terrain. Besides bringing ease of movement, the waterways projects will also help generate employment locally, he said.

The Shipping and Tourism Ministry may soon set up a committee that will consider techniques to promote cruises, sea sports and a light house viewing exhibition among others, to explore the opportunities in coastal tourism.

The Minister of State for Shipping, Mansukh Mandaviya, and Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, Prahlad Singh Patel, examined the massive potential for in an ongoing meeting maritime travel industry in the country.

One of the numerous thoughts was that every coastal area can make a calendar of events

to engage tourists. This would incorporate activities such as beach volleyball, sand art, food festivals, dances of fishing community and the preferences.

The Shipping Ministry is advancing the travel industry in maritime states under the Sagarmala Program, which is being done along with the Ministry of Tourism and Tourism Development Departments of maritime state governments.

In the coming years, coastal and maritime tourism will be a source for development and employment in the coastal state of India.

The Tourism Ministry is developing public infrastructure like tourist parks and tourism clusters in 15 identified circuits across the country, Lok Sabha was informed recently. Union Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said that the initiative has been taken under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme.

“Under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, Integrated Development of Theme Based Tourist Circuits is developing tourism infrastructure in 15 identified circuits, across the country, having tourist potential in a planned and prioritised manner,” he said. Patel said that under this scheme, the ministry is developing public infrastructure in circuits including tourist parks and tourism clusters.

Rural Circuit has been identified as one of the thematic circuit for development with an objective to develop basic infrastructure for showcasing rural sites and culture of the country to tourists, he said.

Union Culture Minister (IC) Prahlad Singh Patel announced that opening hours of 10 historical monuments across the country has been increased and now these monuments will remain open from sunrise to 9 pm for public.

Earlier these monuments used to open from 9 am to 5.30 pm for general public. Patel said that this decision has been made for the benefit of general public/tourists who can visit and appreciate the beauty of such historical sites for long hours.

The Minister also informed that other than these 10 monuments some other historical monuments are also under consideration for long opening hours for visitors. These 10 monuments have been selected in first phase, he added.

The 10 historical monuments are Rajarani Temple Complex, Bhubaneswar; Dulhadeo Temple, Khajurao; Sheikh Chilli Tomb, Thanesar, Kurukshetra; Safdarjung Tomb, Delhi; Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi; Group of Monuments at Pattadakkal, Karnataka; Gol Gumbaz, Vijayapura; Group of Temples, Markanda, Chamursi, Gadchiroli; Man Mahal, Vaidhshala, Varanasi and Rani-ki-Vav, Patan, Gujarat.

YES Bank acquires 18.55 per cent in Cox & Kings My Value Travel.com Launches

“MVT Rewards Program”

Think Strawberries appointed as MMPRC Representative in India market

MakeMyTrip narrows operating losses after growth across air, hotels and bus verticals

YES Bank has acquired 18.55 per cent stake in Cox and Kings on invocation of pledged shares. It has also acquired 30 per cent stake in Ezeego One Travel & Tours, which is promoted by Cox & Kings. “YES Bank has, pursuant to invocation of pledge acquired shares – 3,27,50,139 equity shares having nominal value of INR five a share, constituting 18.55 per cent of the post-issue paid-up share capital, of a listed company, Cox & Kings and 34,080 equity shares having nominal value of INR 10 (USD 0.15) per share, constituting 30 per cent of the post-issue paid-up share capital, of an unlisted company, namely, Ezeego One Travel & Tours,” it said in a regulatory filing.

The shares have been invoked after breach of credit facilities and loans to Ezeego One, YES Bank said. The move comes at a time when Cox & Kings has been facing an asset-

liability mismatch. In a regulatory filing on July 1, it had announced that its working capital situation was stretched in the last few months, which was further impacted due to its inability to replace short-term loans with long-term loans or regular working capital lines. Some of its bank guarantees are being encashed by International Air Transport Association (IATA). IATA had also suspended the licence of Cox & Kings for selling tickets as the company continues to grapple with the liquidity crisis.

My Value Travel.com has launched a unique rewards program-“MVT Rewards Program” for the travel agent’s network. The ‘MVT Rewards Program’ promises multiple rewards for travel agents per booking wherein its registered B2B agents gets Reward Points for every booking that they make on ‘myvaluetravel.com’ as well as Bonus points for the next booking. Moreover, Bonus points of the first booking

would be added to the agent’s ‘Points Total’ when he makes the second booking wherein 100 points is equal to INR 100. Both Reward Points and Bonus Points under the MVT Rewards Program will be calculated based on per passenger booked basis. Reward Points are based on Per Pax booked and would be 50 or more Points, while Bonus Points would be 100 or more Points for per pax booked.

MMPRC, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation has appointed Think Strawberries as its Representative Office in India effective August 1, 2019. The company will implement the destination’s Marketing and PR strategy in the India market. Think Strawberries was the India Representative of MMPRC from 2013 to 2016 as well.

Shikha Mishra, PR & Media

Manager of MMPRC office in India said, “As Maldives has seen a 96.4 per cent growth in Indian tourist arrivals in 2019, it’s a matter of pride for us to appointed as the Marketing and PR Representative for MMPRC in India. We will continue to promote Maldives in the India market with media, trade and consumer activities to increase the visitor arrivals from India to Maldives.”

MakeMyTrip (MMT) has narrowed its adjusted operating loss for the first quarter of 2020 by USD 3.6 million to USD 29.2 million. The India-based company reported gross bookings up 24 per cent to USD 1.7 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2019 and adjusted revenue up 21 per cent to USD 198.5 million.

Group Chairman and Chief Executive Deep Kalra hailed strong business growth in the peak travel quarter despite softer domestic demand. MakeMyTrip’s adjusted revenue growth for the quarter is attributed to a 19.6 per cent increase to adjusted

revenue of USD 65 million in air ticketing and an eight per cent increase to USD 101.4 million in adjusted revenue for hotels and packages. Back in April, Ctrip gained a 49 per cent stake in MakeMyTrip in a deal which saw the China-based OTA give up almost six per cent of its shares.

Kalra highlighted the company’s business travel strategy, revealing the pilot during the quarter of an “online end-to-end enterprise grade solution” for large corporates. The pilot follows MMT’s acquisition of Quest2Travel in May, which marked its entrance into the corporate travel space.

IDEAL LOCATIONOkinawa is also known as the “rope in the open sea” which correctly defines the chain of islands between the four main islands of Taiwan and Japan. A hotspot for global travellers looking for a little sand and surf, Okinawa is finally getting its turn in the spotlight, thanks to its increasing flights from the mainland of Japan. It feels distinctly different than the urban vibes of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka as because Okinawa existed for centuries as part of its own kingdom, giving the island its own distinct culture, dialect and cuisine. Another reason why it feels different is because it’s more reminiscent of a place like Hawaii than the aforementioned tech-forward metropolises, as part of Japan’s southernmost prefecture, which actually contains more than 160 large and small islands including 49 inhabited islands over a vast ocean area ranging from approximately 400 km south to north and 1,000 km east to west. At Okinawa, visitors may also come face to face with the unique Ryukyu culture and legends.

CHERISH THE GLUTTONYIt is said that Okinawan food is entirely different from the rest of Japanese cuisine. Okinawan taste of recipes tends to lean towards the thicker and spicier flavours compared to the other Japanese food recipes thus, attracting more of spice-loving foodies and gourmands. The island of Okinawa has always been more heavily influenced by Chinese culinary ways and techniques that make the spread more familiar and recognised. The dishes are devised to be nutritionally balanced, combining the essence of ingredients rich in vitamins, such as bitter gourd and loofah, with pork that has been carefully prepared to break up the fat over a long period of time. Commonly seen in a wedding menu, one can find an Okinawan-styled Sōki Soba with extra pork served alongside the noodles. Less common but still firmly on the Okinawan menu is chimu shinji (pork liver soup). Even the intestines are not overlooked, finding their way into a soup that is featured on wedding reception menus. Vegetarians, too, may find a vast spread of authentic Okinawan servings to indulge in.

THAT’S NOT ALL!The fun does not end on the day of the wedding in Okinawa. A wide spectrum of activities is available for both the couples and their families after the nuptial ceremony. The moment a couple steps out from their resorts after weddings in Okinawa is also the moment they may start their honeymoon. The pristine nature, places of historical and cultural interests, delicious foods and a variety of entertainments — Okinawa offers a wealth of activities for people of varied taste and preferences. Visitors may also try their hands on the several marine sports on the Okinawan shores or enjoy shopping and eating local food to their heart’s content. Additionally, one may prefer a relaxing aesthetic treatment or sightseeing to experience the Okinawan culture. One of the merits of a resort wedding is that it gives the couple a chance to enjoy the trip together with their relatives and guests, offering unforgettable experiences for every guest at the wedding.

SOAK IN THE SUNWith gentle sea breezes, passionate sunlight and dazzling sceneries surrounding the coastline, weddings will be the most memorable and romantic ones that one may dream of. Okinawa has vibrant coral reefs, lush rainforests, beaches galore and average annual temperatures that rarely dip below 58 degrees Fahrenheit. Beach weddings and photoshoots never go out of style. Noted for some of the most well-known beaches for its’ picturesque sceneries, Okinawa offers the Manza Beach that looks almost artificial with its crystal blue waters, paired with Okinawa’s sapphire blue sky. Followed by which, comes the Emerald Beach and Okuma Beach. Another is a beach with AA rank waters, Sun Marina is known for its calm waves making for a peaceful setting for the photoshoot. Nishihara Kira Kira and Nirai Beach also deserve a special mention. A beach photoshoot is a great way to get some beautiful photos and some sun!

In Conversation

Observing the sharp rise in the Indian outbound market, JNTO is now looking to promote a new destination named Okinawa Prefecture in India, as a wedding tourism destination, which is a part of its initiatives to woo Indian tourists to the country. Setting its sights on India’s outbound wedding market, mainly driven by wealthy individuals in the country, JNTO recently organised a seminar to showcase Okinawa as an ideal destination to India’s local wedding planners.

In an effort to position Okinawa as the next best-suited wedding destination for the India market, JNTO is hopeful to increase the footfall of India travellers. Followed by this, JNTO organised a wedding seminar in Pullman New Delhi Aerocity, which was headed by Yamamoto while Okinawa Prefecture addressed 35 to 40 influential wedding planners from the Delhi market. He says that owing to such a thrust in the rising number of Indians visiting Japan, JNTO can very well expect to receive tentatively 2,00, 000 Indians by the end of 2019.

“JNTO is very keen to continue attracting Indian travellers with cities such as Osaka, Tokyo, Hiroshima and several other such places. Many Indian travellers are yet to know about Okinawa. Therefore, we are keener to promote Okinawa as a wedding destination in this increasing market that is consistently looking out for new, international destinations to tie the knot. Okinawa could be a dream destination for

Indian weddings. Last March, we invited wedding planners to Okinawa to explore the island prefecture’s potential to cater to India’s lucrative outbound wedding market and the feedback has been outstanding,” shares Yamamoto and continues, “India, as a source market, is yet to be a mature one for JNTO as not much of the Indian outbound travellers’ pie visit Japan. Only 100 to 150 thousand people travel from Japan last year whereas, India has such a potential outbound market. Consequently, we expect around 2,00, 000 Indians by the end of 2019 visiting Japan.” There is a huge potential of Okinawa for pulling an added number of the footfall of Indian travellers on the island, according to Yamamoto.

“According to FICCI, India’s wedding tourism market is slated to jump to INR 450 billion (USD 6.5 billion) by 2020. The India market is currently witnessing a rise in the middle-class group and high spending power. Therefore, we see a high potential in this market and want to penetrate in this segment by educating the travel agents who play a very critical role in decision making. The Okinawa prefecture in Japan would definitely be the best fit for such a lifetime memorable event. We are certain that they would be allured by the beauty of Okinawa and the scenic beauty of the destination will add charm to their wedding ceremonies,” shares Yamamoto.

Other than Okinawa, Yamamoto informs that JNTO plans on introducing new destinations

such as Hokkaido along with several other suburb areas. He states that there are many hotels in the suburban areas that should be surfaced for the Indians. After his recent joining, Yamamoto informs that the basic and key objective of JNTO India, for now, would be “to inform Indian trade and travellers about Japan, introduce MICE, wedding and the cutting-edge aspects of the destinations and highlight the fact that food cannot act as a hindrance in organising Indian weddings on the island as Japan offers a high-capacity of Indian chefs and restaurants.” He also mentioned that the idea of encouraging film shootings in Japanese destinations is an ideal avenue for promoting the beauty of Japan.

The conference began with a welcoming speech by JNTO, followed by the presentation from representatives of varied Okinawa-based hotels and resorts and onboard airlines. There were also few presentations by the wedding planners who were earlier taken to Okinawa, to give them an in-depth, firsthand experience of the destination. They showcased the exact details, which any wedding planner would need while suggesting their clientele about a location. Present at the seminar were the delegates representing Okinawa Prefecture, Rizzan Sea Park Hotel Tanchana Bay, Kariyushi Hotels Group, ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort, DMC Okinawa, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and JNTO, itself.

With the recent initiatives of rising both demand and knowledge about its varied destinations on the island, Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) is keen to attract the Indian travellers by introducing the products and offerings of wedding tourism in a newly-introduced destination, which is expected to supply that added boost to the incoming footfall in the ‘Land of Rising Sun.’ The recently-appointed Executive Director of JNTO India, Yusuke Yamamoto shares more

Report

The Indian hospitality industry, spearheaded by the hotel market, has emerged as one of the primary sectors which are driving the economic growth of the country.

In India, hotels are classified based on location (city hotels, airport motels, resorts, etc.), level of service (upscale, mid-market, and economy) and themes (boutique hotels, heritage hotels, etc.).

MARKET INSIGHTS:The occupancy rate (percentage of days for which rooms are booked in a given period) of the major hotels in India increased at a rate of ~65 per cent between FY 2017 and FY 2018, due to increased demand from business and leisure travellers and a slowdown in the addition of new hotel rooms across the country.

MARKET SEGMENT INSIGHTS:Kerala is anticipated to be the leading provider of hospitality services in the country, with a total of 440 approved hotels. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu are the other states

that make up the list of top five states with regard to hospitality services.

In terms of revenue sources for hotels, rooms have so far had the largest share. In FY 2017, on an average, ~53.6 per cent of the total revenue of Indian hotels came from rooms, followed by food and beverages, and banquet services. Demand for hotel rooms is high across the country, owing to increased business related and leisure travel.

MARKET TRENDS:• Hotel owners are adopting the latest

marketing practices through social media, which prove to be effective in generating exposure and higher volume of bookings.

• Hotel booking apps are being used increasingly by consumers since they are easy to handle and provide users with the most suitable options based on their requirements.

KEY GROWTH DRIVERS OF THE MARKET:During CY 2017, the total number of foreign tourist arrivals in India stood at 10.04 million

and reached 6.75 Mn in January to August 2018, registering a YoY growth rate of 7.5 per cent. An increase in the number of foreign tourists and international corporate travellers looking for business opportunities in the country is driving the growth of the hotel industry in India.

The Indian government has allowed 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in tourism construction projects, development of hotels, resorts, and recreational facilities. This will act as a driving force for the development of new hotels across the country.

KEY DETERRENTS TO THE GROWTH OF THE MARKET:

The implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) has helped customers of the hospitality industry with reduced expenditure, by harmonising taxes and reducing business transaction costs. This however, has turned out to be a disadvantage for hotel owners since the final cost that end users bear has decreased, thus reducing their profit margins.

The hotel industry in India is evaluated to reach a value of INR 1,210 billion by the end of 2023, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of ~13 per cent during the 2018-2023 period, owing to the high arrival rate of foreign tourists and business delegates

The Indian hotel market is expected to grow by a CACR 13 per cent during 2018-2023

The Lufthansa Group enjoyed a continuing strong performance in its long-haul business in the first half of 2019, particularly on its key North American and Asian routes. On short-haul routes in Europe, the price war in Germany and Austria in particular had a negative impact on earnings.

“Our earnings are feeling the effects of tough competition in Europe and sizeable overcapacities, especially on our short-haul routes out of Germany and Austria,” says Ulrik Svensson, Chief Financial Officer of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “We are responding to this by further reducing our costs and increasing our flexibility. And with the turnaround plan which we recently presented, we also intend to make Eurowings a sustainably profitable airline.”

In the second quarter, Group revenues rose by four per cent to EUR 9.6 billion (prior-year period: EUR 9.3 billion). Adjusted EBIT amounted to EUR 754 million (prior-year period: EUR one billion). The adjusted EBIT margin for the second quarter was thus 7.8 per cent (prior-year period: 10.8 per cent). Fuel costs alone were EUR 255 million higher in the second quarter of 2019 than in the previous year.

Air Arabia, the Middle East and North Africa’s

first and largest low-cost carrier (LCC), received its second Airbus (A321neo Long Range). The aircraft flew nonstop from Hamburg, Germany to Sharjah International Airport. The addition of the second A321neo LR will enable Air Arabia to expand to new medium-haul markets in addition to strengthening its existing routes.

The A321 neo LR accommodates 215 passengers and is equipped with Air Arabia’s complimentary in-flight entertainment system ‘SkyTime’ that allows passengers to live stream digital content on smartphones, tablets and laptops. Air Arabia is the first Middle Eastern airline to operate the A321neo LR and this delivery is the second of six aircraft that will join the airline’s fleet of 53 Airbus A320 aircraft, serving more than 170 routes across the globe from its four hubs including Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE, Morocco and Egypt.

TRADE AVIATIONPhenomenal growth in Indian Aviation; may have 2,000 planes in short time: Puri

Etihad to boost its services from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow The Indian aviation sector is witnessing

phenomenal growth and there could be 2,000 planes in a short time, Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on August 2. He told the Lok Sabha that the country’s aviation sector is the third largest in the world and there is an annual growth of 17 per cent. In 2008, the number of passengers stood at 117 million and now it is around 440 million. It is expected to touch 1 billion, the minister said.

With the kind of orders for aircraft, the number could be 2,000 in a short time, Puri noted. The country currently has over 600 aircraft. The minister was responding to a debate on a bill to amend the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) Act.

Puri said he would ask Finance Minister

Nirmala Sitharaman to delink Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from petrol and diesel. ATF accounts for a significant chunk of the operational costs of an airline. The cost of aviation is high as there are institutional constraints, he said. The minister said the debt of Air India is completely unsustainable and privatisation of the airline would be pushed through soon. The national carrier has a debt burden of more than INR 50,000 crore.

Etihad Airways is set to boost its services from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow by adding a fourth year-round daily service between the two capitals, launching on October 27, 2019. The new service introduces a convenient mid-morning departure from Abu Dhabi and a late evening departure from London Heathrow and follows the introduction of additional seasonal services this summer.

The airline will introduce a next-generation, two-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on one of its four daily London services. The aircraft is configured with 299 seats - 28 Business Studios and 271 Economy Smart Seats. This complements the three other services which are operated by Etihad’s 486-seat Airbus A380s, which feature The Residence, a luxurious three-room cabin, nine private First Apartments, 70 Business Studios and 405 Economy Smart Seats. These include 80 Economy Space seats with a seat pitch of up to 36 inches.

Robin Kamark, Commercial Officer, Etihad Aviation Group Chief said, “The flagship Abu Dhabi to London route is tremendously popular with point-to-point business and leisure travellers, and those transiting beyond our hub and we recently boosted frequencies between the two cities to meet increased demand at peak travel times. Adding a fourth year-round flight will provide much needed capacity and optimised timings and easy connections to key destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia.

“The new service demonstrates our commitment to the crucially important UK market, and ensures we provide our customers with all the benefits of a next-generation fleet across all 42 weekly departures to and from the United Kingdom.”
