Iran – Iraq War

• Increased in 1971 due to disputes over control of the Shatt al-Arab Waterway (used for oil shipping)

• 1975 Algiers Agreement was intended to allow both countries equal use of the waterway

• Disputes over region since collapse of the Ottoman Empire

Iran – Iraq War • Tensions increased between

Saddam Hussein of Iraq

Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran

Saddam stated that the Iranian Revolution violated the sovereignty of the Iranian Government and was a threat to the safety of Iraq

Khomeini stated that Saddam’s Government was corrupt, oppressive and secularist and violated the very foundations of Islam

Sep 1980 – Iraqi Causes for Invasion

• Iranians attempted to assassinate the Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister • Disputes over control of the Shatt al-Arab waterway increased • Prevention of the possible spread of an Islamic Revolution in the Middle East • Increased control of vital oil resources along the Iran-Iraq border

• U.S. supported Iraq to oppose expansion of Iran in the region

Attack Aircraft fired missiles at the USS Stark in 1987 (Killing 37 and injuring 25)

Iran – Iraq War USS Vincennes Incident: US Navy Missile Destroyer

shot down Commercial Airliner in 1988 (Iranian Flight 655) killing 290 on board

US Radar operators identified airliner as an Iranian Fighter Jet

Iraqi use of Chemical Weapons accounted for at least 50,000 deaths during the war

UN negotiated a cease fire Between Iraq & Iran on

Persian Gulf War

• Lasted from Aug 1990 – Feb 1991

Iraqi Reasons for Invading Kuwait

• Claimed Kuwait was a province of Iraq (Recognized their government in 1963)

• Iran-Iraq war put Iraq in debt to Kuwait (They refused to write off the millions)

• Collapsing oil prices affected Iraq

Claimed Kuwait’s slant drilling was stealing Iraqi Oil reserves

Claimed Kuwait was exceeding OPEC quotas on oil production

Persian Gulf War • 2 Aug 1990 – Iraq Invaded Kuwait

• 23 Aug 1990 – Saddam Hussein appeared on Iraqi TV with Western hostages (to prevent retaliations)

• 29 Nov 1990 – U.N. Resolution #678 gave Iraq until 15 Jan 1991 to withdraw all troops from Kuwait

• 7 Aug 1990 – Operation Desert Shield established to protect Saudi Arabia from attack

• United Nations Coalition Force of 34 different Nations

• UN Forces used Carpet Bombing

• Iraqi responded by starting Scud Missile Attacks (Suspected of using Chemical Agents)

• 22 Jan 1991 – Iraq fired missiles at Israel

• Saddam’s attempt to start a “Holy War”

Persian Gulf War • 29 Jan 1991 – Iraqi forces crossed border into Saudi Arabia and attacked city of Khafji

• 23 Feb 1991 – Operation Desert Storm commenced

• General Norman Schwarzkopf used the “Hail Mary” maneuver with elements of the U.S. Army’s 7th Corps & 18th Airborne Corps

• Saddam’s sons (Usay & Qusay) were both killed by US Forces

• Saddam had his son-in-laws murdered when they tried to escape his control by trying to leave the country
