Pine View High Theatre , 2012-2013

A former director of the BYU Honors Program, Thomas F. Rogers is professor emeritus of Russian language and literature at Brigham Young University and the author of more than a score of plays, many on Mormon subjects. Four of these have been published in God’s Fools (Signature Books, 1983), which also received the Associa-tion of Mormon Letters Drama Prize that same year: HUEBENER (the first literary treatment of its subject), FIRE IN THE BONES (again, the first literary treatment of its subject, the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre), GOD’S FOOLS (or JOURNEY TO GOLGOTHA) and REUNION. Other titles include: The SECOND PRIEST,

The ANOINTED (an Old Testament narrative with music by C. Michael Perry) and The SEAGULL (translated and adapted from the Chekov play).

In 1992, GENTLE BARBARIAN, FRERE LAWRENCE and CHARADES were pub-lished in a second anthology entitled ‘Huebener’ and Other Plays by Thomas F. Rog-ers. Rogers has also penned stage adaptations of Dostoevsky’s novels CRIME AND PUNISHMENT and THE IDIOT, an opera libretto based on Hawthorne’s THE SCAR-LET LETTER, a translation of Georg Buechner’s WOYCZEK (produced at BYU), and scripts based on novels by local authors, Phillip Flammer and Ben Parkinson. The first of these received a BYU production, directed by Tad Danielewski, in which Rogers played the role of Marmeladov.

In 1995–1996 GOD’S FOOLS was produced (in translation) by a professional reperto-ry theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, where Rogers was then serving as an LDS mission president. He also played the role of the American double spy Cooper in that produc-tion. During that mission he directed LDS Church members in a stage adaptation of Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov and a Russian language version of HUE-BENER. The play has also since been produced in Finland in the Finnish language, while a German translation still awaits forthcoming performances in that language.

At BYU and in Provo, Utah, he directed the premiere productions of Robert Vincek’s For the Lions to Win, Thom Duncan’s Matters of the Heart and Eric Samuselsen’s Accommodations and in Bountiful, Utah, a production of HUEBENER. Besides nu-merous productions in both Russian and German for the BYU Department of German-ic and Slavic Languages, he has directed Chekhov’s The Three Sisters (in German) for Deutsches Teater Salt Lake City, where he also performed as an actor, and Synge’s Playboy of the Western World, Pirandello’s It Is So If You Think So and Pinter’s The Caretaker for the BYU Department of Theatre.

Huebener by Thomas f. rogers

ANI ROGERS (Director) was born in St. George Utah, coming up through the Dixie cone-site and graduating from Dixie High School ‘04. Ani continued her education at Dix-ie State College and Southern Utah University before finally graduating from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in Theatre Arts Studies. Ani is currently continuing her educa-tion at Utah Valley University. Ani has taught at Dixie Mid-dle School, Dixon Middle School and is now in her second year teaching at Pine View High. She has directed and cho-reographed many one-act shows, theatre reviews, talent shows and musicals including Once on This Island, Bye Bye Birdie, Annie, High School Musical, The Sound of Music, The Rainmaker and most recently The King & I which was nomi-

nated in many categories of achievement for the upcoming 2014 Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards. Ani also continues to develop her own craft by participating in local theatre as an actress. Favorite roles include Footloose, Les Mis-erables, Lost In Yonkers, Once On This Island (Dixie High School), Seussical, Moliere in Love (Southern Utah University), Oklahoma (Brigham Young University), and Trojan Women (Dixie State College). Nothing could bring Ani more satisfaction then to re-turn to her home and “give back” to the community that helped develop her char-acter, ideals, and love of theatre. Ani would like to dedicate this performance to all the living and now deceased individuals this story speaks of… especially her hero, Helmuth Huebener. “Your sacrifice was not in vain…”

The King & I Matinee - NOV 4 & 5, 2013

Performance - NOV 6-9, 2013

Cited by Eugene England as “undoubtedly the father of modern Mormon drama,” Rogers received the Mormon Arts Festival’s Distinguished Achievement Award in 1998 and in 2002 a Lifetime Service Award from the Association of Mormon Letters. His published stories have appeared in volume 2, no. 2 of Sunstone, the Summer 1991 and Winter 2001 issues of Dialogue (receiving an annual Dialogue fiction award) and in the collec-tions Christmas for the World (SLC: Aspen Books, 1991) and The Gifts of Christmas (SLC: Deseret Book Co., 1999). Rogers has served as editor of Encyclia, journal of the Utah Academy and authored two critical monograph: ‘Superfluous Men’ and the Post-Stalin ‘Thaw’ (The Hague: Mouton, 1972) and Myth and Symbol in Soviet Fiction (San Francisco & New York: The Edwin Mellen Research University Press, 1992).

Rogers studied at the Yale School of Drama and holds degrees from the University of Utah, Yale, and Georgetown. He has also studied theater in Poland and Russian at Mos-cow State University and taught at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Utah. He has intensively studied some ten languages and had extensive residences in Russia, Eastern Europe, India, China and the Middle East. He and his wife Merriam are the parents of seven children, thirty-eight grandchildren and, so far, three great grandchildren. They reside in Bountiful, Utah.

THE STORY OF THE PLAY - Huebener

Pin

Helmuth Huebener is a German teen, intelligent and dedicated to

the church. Its 1941 and as he listens to British news broadcasts on

a stolen radio, he begins to realize everything the Third Reich is

saying is full of lies. His friends, including a young man who wit-

nessed a Jewish wife hauled away in a pogrom, doubt they can do

anything. They know if they complain to much, they themselves

might be persecuted, as well as endanger the church, which is al-

ready known as a small minority with strong ties with the allies.

But Huebener knows its wrong to be passive “we’re letting it hap-

pen. We’ve got blinders on,” He tells his friends. Tensions rise

further when an old branch member, a Jew, is denied access to the

church. Huebener must assert his conscience. Using the churches

duplicating machine, the fearless Latter-day Saint begins a cam-

paign against Hitler’s propaganda machine, well aware of the risk

to his life. In this play we witness his tragic story.

“Huebener’ has to be the most brilliant piece of theatre from a

Utah author to date - a haunting, moving, powerful, drama of

ethics.”

Mary Dickson, Salt Lake Tribune

“If one is allowed only a few peak experiences in life, one for me

was watching the text emerge of Thomas Rogers’ play ‘Huebener.’

The work is a product of our local culture which has universal

meaning. It invites all to consider models in addition to the pioneer

legacy, to apply out thinking to contemporary issues, in this case

the competing loyalty between freedom and obedience.”

Douglas D. Alder - President, Dixie College

CAST BIOGRAPHIES

Helmuth Huebener MCKAY COOMBS

McKay is 16 years old and a Junior at PVHS. He is su-premely honored to be a part of the theatre program here, and loves it! Especial-

ly partying/rehearsing (there's no difference) with all his friends. He enjoys school, and his favorite class is all of them. McKay also loves music and is involved with the Choir, Pan-ther Jazz Band, and private piano les-sons. McKay also immensely enjoys the outdoors, especially canyoneering in the backcountry of Zion National Park or just going on adventures to new places. He's super duper thankful for his supporting parents! Love you guys!! Karl-Heinz Schnibbe THOMAS COX

Thomas "Tommy" Cox is playing the role of Karl-Heinz Schnibbe in the production Hue-bener. This is his first time ever acting on-

stage and he is both excited and nerv-ous. Tommy is a Junior at Pine View and will be 18 years old this May. Giraffes are by far his favorite animal, he says that giraffes are so awkward that somehow they're beautiful, kind of like him. Tommy would like to give his thanks to many people: to Ms. Rogers for giving him a chance

and putting up with his weirdness, to his parents for always supporting him, and to his older brother Kaden who inspires him daily. Also he sends a special thank you to all the 16-18 year-old girls who attended this per-formance and would very much like to ta lk to them a fter the show. Tommy is very humbled to be able to be able to take part in such an incredible true story, and will always be awed by the sacrifices Karl-Heinz and the rest of the real Huebener company made. Enjoy the show, and in the words of Tommy, "I'm out of here! You're all giraffing me crazy!"

Rudi Wobbe KELTON JACOBSEN

This is Kelton's 4th pro-duction with Pine View Theatre. He was a member of the ensem-ble in "Fiddler on the Roof", Friedrich in

Rogers and Hammerstein’s "Sound of Music", and most recently Lun Tha in Rogers and Hammerstein’s "The King and I". Kelton loves Pine View and is largely involved in the music and theatre departments. He is in Pine Views chamber choir Trilogy and loves every second of it. He looks

forward to becoming a better actor and singer this year and over the sum-mer. He was thrilled when he read he got to be one of the Head Builders for the set of Huebener. Kelton was largely a part of the set building for King and I, so that propelled him to one of the lead builders for Hue-bener. Kelton put many hours into the set with fellow colleagues and is very pleased how it turns out. He would like to thank Ms. Rogers for never giving up on him and always pushing him to be his best. "I couldn't do it with out you Ms. Rogers!"

Emma Huebener CIERRA PUGMIRE

Cierra is a Senior at Pine View High School and has been involved in theatre for five years. “Huebener” is her third main stage production, having previ-

ously played the roles of Sister Sophia in “The Sound of Music”, as well as Lady Thiang in Pine View’s most re-cent production of “The King & I.” She is so grateful for the opportunity she has to play Emma in this year’s spring pro-duction. She is currently in Pine View’s auditioned Chamber Choir, Trilogy, and serves as the Choir President in this year’s Choir Coun-cil. She also was awarded the honor of Pine View's Sterling Scholar for Speech and Drama. She loves

performing, whether it be singing, acting, or dancing (as amateur as she is at the latter). Cierra has loved working with the other wonderful actors in “Huebener” and is so grate-ful to Ms. Rogers for giving her this chance, as well as to her friends, her family, and her Heavenly Father for all of the strong support and love she has received. She hopes you enjoy the show as much as she has while putting it all together.

Hugo Huebener JAKE PARKINSON

Jake Parkinson is a jun-ior here at Pine View High School, and is very excited to be a part of this production of Huebner! Jake has been

apart of several musical productions throughout his short life, but this is his first time being involved in a straight play (where singing is no longer a crutch on which he can lean on). He is Hugo Huebner, Helmuth's adopted father, in this play, the very first high school production of Hueb-ner, and he hopes to one day be... Well, he'll hopefully figure that out a later date. He would like to express his gratitude to his friends, his teach-ers, his family and his *back- all of which got him to this point. If that doesn't make sense, ask Jake (:

ble for "Fiddler on the Roof" and "The Sound of Music" both at Pine View. She would like to thank Miss Rogers for pushing her and helping her to be her best. She loves the the-atre and fells so blessed to have dis-covered it. She would most of all like to thank her family for putting up with her. But she would also most of all like to thank anyone who donated to our show and for coming! She hopes you enjoy the show.
