Interview (My Grandpa)

Most memorable?

Really bloodily, sometimes even weaponless combat battle because we ran out of ammo.

memorable moments?

Fix road in the night and hide in the day because USAF planes bombed. Everyone was really tired and thirsty and was passing a Korean apple farm but no one pick an apple to eat because they were planted by Koreans.1953, JingCheng Fangjizhan. Middle Hospital in the war. Didn’t sleep till seven days later. One man, he got shot on the leg and he was bleeding a lot and my grandpa donated 100ml blood to him. Really cold, food is always miss salt or other. In caves .

Any time when in combat?

At the Yun Shang battle, the Chinese and US forces meet and fight at the Yun Shang town. The town was totally destroyed after the battle. US forces have tanks and air planes （F-86). Every street was a battle field. Tanks every where. blowing up a tanks by tie up a few grenade together and stuff it inside the tank’s Caterpillar band. HE went with one of his friends. He was the medic on his squad. His team took over a few block but the US had tanks. They managed to blow up 2 tanks but in his squad almost no one is left but him and his captain. They diced to blow up one last tank so the hide in the tall grass next to a destroyed house. One tank came out on the corner of the street. they went at the same time. he went over with his cap but he put his package a little bit too early so the drivers saw him and his cap, which is still putting his bomb in the tank. the tank explode His in his team of 27 men, only him and 2 other injured men survived the battle of Unsan. They ran together and they find another injured captain. when they were helping him up. US troop fired a rifle and killed him cap. and the other cap died too and he ran away.

How did you feel after the battle when all your friends and your cap died?

I was really sad and didn’t cared about any thing. Which mean I can’t fight with a normal attitude. Thats one of the reasons that I went to a medic camp (middle hospital) after that battle.

What is middle hospital?

It is where injured troops get sent to when they are injured in the frontline. Frontline medics do stuff to make sure they don’t die. Here we do like pump blood and do thing frontline medic can’t do since they are in combat. badly injured troops get sleeping drugs here and than get sent to the back hospital to get treatment.

How did you feel when the bomb exploded?

I felt really dizzy. It is like I’m slowly dywwing.

How did you guys bomb tanks?

Sometimes we bomb tanks by climbing on the top and open the top and but the bomb inside. That way is really easy to get killed. Another way is to put the bomb inside the tank track when the tank pass. When you blow up the tank track the tank can’t move so it is useless. You can’t kill the people inside the tank by the way.

Any other reasons why you went to the medic camp?

I know how to hide from air strikes and they have a lot more injured people than doctors.

Any other important things when you got back to the forward base?

I was told to got to a medic camp. I packed my clothes, my pistol and all my Ammo and my captain’s box of chocolate his wife sent him before this battle. I sent it to his wife after the war.

Battle of Unsan! “Cao(曹), find some grenades in the dead body’s back pack. I think we have more tanks coming towards us,” my captain yelled over the gun shots in the city. ! “Boom!” A bomb exploded ten or fifteen meters in front of us. ! “It looks like they know we are here,” my captain mumbled to him self.! “Enemy tank, get down!” I screamed at my captain and crouched in the tall grass next to a destroyed wall. ! Right after he spoke, a tank with a USA sign on the front appeared on the street. Within seconds, machine guns on the tank burst to life, sending bullets everywhere. ! “Get down!” my captain called at the top of his voice.! Then, he said something I couldn’t hear over the gun shots. The tank seemed not to notice us. Maybe it was because we were in the tall grass. A few men holding rifles came sprinting out beside me. They rushed past us and yelled,“There are too many of them, we have to retreat!” ! I heard people speaking English behind the broken wall. Foot steps pounded on the street, louder and louder and the shouting in English was loud enough to be heard through the cross fire. ! “Cap, we already lost 27 men. Do we still use the same plan?”

! “Yes, the tank is coming, get ready. Remember, go at the same time,” my captain shouted.! “Meet you back at high ground 343,” I replied back. Since the war began a few months ago, our squad had named each block with a number. We named cities or woods as a random name. High Ground 343 meant the forest on the east side of Unsan. ! “Cao, my wife sent me a box of chocolates before this battle. Lets eat it together after this,” Cap said.! “Ya sure,” I replied.! We used hand signals to communicate so our enemy didn’t notice us. My Cap did the sign to tie up bombs and get ready. I put all the grenades together and tied a tight knot that I thought was going to hold the grenades together. I thought he was trying to say it was ok, that it would work, but I was not sure. ! The tank slowly advanced toward us with about ten US troops next to it. Suddenly, two other US infantries came from the other side of the street. They spoke for a minute or so then split up with the team who came with the tank. “The tank is alone now, this is our chance!” I thought to myself.! I totally forgot about my captain on the other side of the street. I charged without thinking. It felt like time slowed down when I stood up. My life flashed in front of my eyes. I ignored all the bullets whizzing out from the holes in the tank. I ran as fast as I could and tried to stay alive. I aimed for the left side tank track and stuck my bomb inside. While pulling the string on the grenade, I

dodged behind a small bump on the ground and stayed as low as I could. It felt like the grenade would never explode.

! Boom! Finally, the bomb exploded. My whole body felt dizzy and I thought I was dead. I was not able to hear nor see anything. My eyes felt like they were on fire and my brain felt like it was blown out of my head. The ground felt like it was spinning and I lost my balance. I struggled to my feet and slowly ran towards where my captan was hiding.! “Ambush!” one of the US soldiers yelled at the top of his lungs. ! Everyone ran for cover while me and my captan retreated. In a flash, we were already out of the city and headed to our forward military base about two kilometers away. Everything was looking fine before I saw a moving body in the tall grass. ! “Cap, isn't that Captain Yei?” I whispered. ! “It sure looks like him. Lets go check it out.” ! “Captan Yei?” my captain asked excitedly.! “We need to get going, the enemy is advancing. We are headed to......”! Bang! A M1 Carbine rifle fired behind us before he could finish his sentence. Blood oozed from his head and his body went limp. Tears poured from my eyes like a waterfall. ! “Get the hell out of here! You are only sixteen!” Captan Yei yelled while pulling out his pistol.

! I dashed though a house and then another and another. Soon, the gun fire stopped. I was sure Captan Yei had died. Everything got better after I arrived back to our forward military base. I was overwhelmed with sadness. I knew I couldn’t fight any more. ! Hours passed but I still didn’t have the power to even get up. I asked our commander if I could go to a forward medic base since I couldn’t fight any more. ! “I’ll see what can I do,” my commander responded.! I was told to go back to my tent and wait. When I stepped in our tent, I saw my captain’s box of chocolates on the table. A cold shiver went up my spine and I remembered when my Cap died. ! “Cao, pack your stuff up and get ready in five minutes. We are leaving for a medic camp a few kilometers north of here,” a voice outside said. ! I didn’t have a lot of things to pack. I stuffed two pairs of clothes inside my backpack, and my pistol and a box of bullets. Finally, I took the box of chocolates and put it gently inside my backpack and took off. I saw a jeep outside my tent waiting for me. I took one last look at my camp like I did when I left for the battle. Tears appeared around my eyes. ‘Why did I live when the others died?” I asked myself.! As I got into the jeep I thought to myself, “Who knows what will happen next?” !

Reflection 1. How has working on this project helped

you learn about your family’s history and given you a better sense of your identity?

Working on this project, I learned that my grandpa have been though a lot of bloody and sad things.

2. Why do you think doing a project like this is important?

I think this is important because while I’m learning Language Arts I’m learning about my own identity.

3. What part of this project did you enjoy the most? Why?

I enjoyed writing my narrative because I was really fun putting all the things in the interview together.

4. What specific challenges did you face during this project and how did you over come them?

The editing part was a little challenging because it is hard for me to get all the tenses right.

5. What advice would you give future students as they begin this project?

Get everything done ahead of time so you have time left edit because if you don’t get all tenses your story will sound bad.
