A step in the right direction At Danisco, we work hard to integrate sustainability in our business model. As a result, we were the first to produce emulsifiers based on sustainable mass balance palm oil.

Mass balance is one of the four supply chain certification systems approved by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) to support the production of sustainable palm oil (see figure 1).

Our purchase of sustainable mass balance palm oil for emulsifier production is an important step towards our sustainability goals. “In 2011, we will be able to handle segregated sustainable palm oil at our plant in Malaysia. It is our intention to ensure all the palm oil we use is certified sustainable by 2015.” says Martin Klavs Nielsen, executive vice president.

Our emulsifiers and blends that contain palm oil are today available in versions based on one or more of the RSPO-approved supply chain systems (figure 2).

Our RSPO-certified plants Our mass balance sustainable emulsifiers are currently produced at our plants in Malaysia and Denmark. The RSPO has also certified our plants in USA, Australia and China to produce emulsifiers and blends using mass balance sustainable palm oil. Our plant in Malaysia is also certified to handle segregated sustainable palm oil.

Your right to a sustainable claim The RSPO has specified claims and communication guidelines for each supply chain option (figure 3). In on-pack or product range communication related to the procurement or use of sustainable palm oil, it is necessary to specify the fraction of palm oil that is RSPO-certified if that fraction is less than 95%. Retailers may base claims on certificates redeemed by their supplier.
