Over four days, IFE13 – the UK’s largest international food and drink trade event – was action packed, attracting thousands of buyers from national and international retailers, wholesalers and foodservice outlets. With more than 1,100 exhibitors from over 50 countries, there was ample opportunity to identify innovative new products and do business.

Christopher McCuin, Event Director of IFE13 and Pro2Pac, commented, “If I could pick one word to describe the shows it would be ‘buzzing’. Whether wandering around the stands, listening to first class speakers, watching emotional pizza chefs win their equivalent of the Oscars, or getting second-to-none industry

advice, ExCeL was alive with excitment and anticipation. All of this proves how important the food, drink and packaging industry is and we can’t wait to get started on the next IFE and Pro2Pac.”

Visitor attractions were at the heart of the show, with many high-profile speakers in attendance, from David Heath MP, Minister of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Groceries Code Adjudicator, Christine Tacon and Mike Coupe, Group Commerical Director at Sainsbury’s, to top chefs Alyn Williams and Steve Munkley. There was a constant stream of seminars, demonstrations, attractions and one-to-one sessions taking place throughout IFE including The Skillery, British Regional Kitchen, The Hub, Export Advice Centre, New Products Live, UK Dairy Export Forum, Fresh Ideas Winners Showcase, the Future of Convenience installation and the UK and internatiuonal Meet-the-Buyer events.

IFE13 also played host to two internationally renowned pizza championships – the European Final of Giropizza of Europe, won by Frenchman Mehdi Douimry, and the UK Final of the World Pizza Championships, which saw Antonio Macera from Glasgow selected to represent the country at the finals in Parma, Italy on the 15-17 April 2013.

ExCeL London was a hive of activity last week as the food, drink and packaging industries turned out in force for a spectacular edition of the co-located IFE13 and Pro2Pacevents. Exhibitors and visitors enthusiastically received both shows, commenting on the busy aisles, insightful attractions and impressive presentation delivered by event organisers Fresh Montgomery. Early indications show the event attracted an audience of 26,498 professionals (subject to ABC audit) from 95 countries, including an over 10% rise in attendance from international visitors.

Brocks Chocs: outstanding Achievements Award 2013

Danesh Amin is a young chocolatier and the founder of Brocks Chocs, a successful confectionary business which was started in 2007 by Danesh when he was just 10 years of age and still in full time education. Since 2007 Danesh has raised a lot of money for charity by selling his extensive range of luxury chocolates.

Danesh has also received a lot of recognition and won many awards for his work including the ‘Outstanding Achievements Award’ in February 2013. Additionally in April 2013 Danesh successfully completed two courses; one in the science of chocolate centres and one in the chocolate production itself. This has been a great chance for Danesh to develop his knowledge and now produce his own high class range of chocolate bars, pralines and truffles.

Pure London, organised by i2iEvents Group, took place at London Olympia from 10th – 12th February 2013 and welcomed over 12,000 high calibre buyers from both the UK and internationally. Nowin its 33rd season, and widelyrecognised as the UK’s leadingtrade fashion buying event, Pure London is also one of Europe’s leading transactional exhibitions, making it an excellent barometer for the retail industry; and this season it reported a buoyant and confident mood at the event, with positive feedback from both exhibitors and retailers.

Spring Fair International, organised by i2i Events, opened on February 3rd 2013 at the NEC and welcomed over 68,116* visitor’s, including more than 5,000 international buyers looking to export British goods abroad - with overall visitor numbers up 6% on last year. Buyers attended from leading independent retailers and all of the UK’s major stores including Selfridges, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Hamleys, Harrods, Liberty, Tesco and Marks & Spencer were well represented. Spring Fair offered Europe’s largest presentation of trend-driven gift products to a market that is hungry for newness and originality. Around 300,000 new launches were showcased by 3,000 exhibitors operating across 13 different market sectors. The signs of economic recovery were indicated by the Spring Fair Retail Barometer, the show’s own major industry survey, which revealed that 82% of retailers are forecasting growth in 2013 and an improvement in consumer confidence. The positive atmosphere at the show bodes well for the retail trade in 2013 and beyond, demonstrating the resilience of our nation’s shop keepers and their determination to breathe new life into the economy in the year ahead. Over £2 billion of business is forecast to be generated by

companies who participated at Spring Fair, making it one of the most important retail trade shows on the international calendar. As well as being Europe’s premier destination for sourcing new gift products, the show offered buyers an unrivalled content programme across eight seminar theatres, demo areas and full-scale catwalks. VISIToRS ANd VIEWERS FLoCK To SEE CRUFTS 2013The Kennel Club today thanks everybody that helped to make Crufts 2013 such a huge success, as visitor numbers to the event increased by three percent and viewing figures on More4 and Channel 4 hit an all time high.The number of people attending Crufts 2013, which took place at the NEC, Birmingham from 7-10 March, increased by three percent from 145,000 in 2012 to almost 149,500 this year.An average of 1.7 million dog lovers tuned into Channel 4 and Channel 4+1 on Sunday night to see Jilly, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen be crowned as Best in Show, and Owen and Haatchi announced as the winners of Friends for Life, with viewing figures peaking at 2 million. The broadcast across the whole event, on More4 and Channel 4, delivered an audience which cumulatively peaked at 4.5 million over the four programmes.The Crufts Facebook page was hugely popular, delivering pictures, videos, news and comment throughout the show and now has over 100,000 likes – the picture of Jilly alone received 9,477 likes and 681 comments.Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “We are ecstatic that Crufts continues to hold such a special place in people’s hearts, particularly at a time when other events are seeing a decline in visitor numbers due to the economic climate.“Crufts is such an important event for helping potential dog

THE FUTURE oF EdUCATIoN dEBATEd AT THE EdUCATIoN SHoW!Taking place at theBirmingham NEC in March during the biggest period of change in the education sector, the Education Show 2013 offered education professionals the opportunity to discuss and help shape policy in a series of Department for Education (DfE) consultations during event. Running alongside the event’s extensive continuing professional development (CPD) programme, the official consultations saw spokespeople from the DfE explain the proposed new curriculum to teachers and school leaders, followed by a question and answer session. The first of their kind under the current coalition Government, the sessions were hosted and facilitated informed feedback from professionals before the end of the curriculum consultation period in April.Concurrent to the DfE sessions, the show also hosted specialist conferences, The Academies Forum and the School Leaders Summit. The School Leaders Summit debated key issues including the new curriculum and examinations system, while the Academies Forum provided a unique platform for education professionals to discuss the merits and concerns of the move to academy status. Other content at the show included the popular Learn Live programme of workshops, seminars and training sessions developed by practitioners, for practitioners and the first National PTA-UK Conference.

Supporting the rich programme of CPD was a strong offering of education suppliers, along with innovative and passionate smaller companies, that showcased the latest teaching tools and most cost-effective procurement schemes. From whole-school solutions to classroom resources, more than 350 companies offered visitors the valued opportunity to ask the questions they had, trial a range of products and services, and gather advice. Touchstone Associates: Giving Feedback - The Right WayManagers tell us that one of the hardestthings they have to dois give employees feedback. Getting the balance right can be challenging - too hard and the employee becomes resistant or fearful, too soft and the message is muted and can be missed.

The following 10-point guide may help you to get the message right:1. Give feedback as soon after the event as possible.2. Prepare your message and how you want to deliver it.3. Give feedback privately, particularly negative feedback.4. Focus on the issue, be clear about the ‘what’.5. Don’t bring up old concerns (unless its part of a developing pattern).6. Focus on behaviours that can be changed, not personality traits.7. Give specific examples of behaviour that concerns you.8. Do not blame others - it weakens your feedback.
