Over 800 schools registered to take part in this year’s competition and the standard of young people’s work was outstanding. We have worked with a record number of clubs this season. Since January 17th we have been at Plymouth, Newcastle Falcons, Sunderland Civic Centre, Dagenham and Redbridge, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Wrexham, Darlington, Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, Colchester, Tranmere, QPR, Crystal Palace, South Shields Town Hall, Spurs, Yeovil, Millennium Stadium, Bury and Wembley Stadium. We have held events at Rangers, Aberdeen, Hearts, Kilmarnock, Hibernian, Dundee, Dundee United, Motherwell, St Mirren, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle and St. Johnsone. Our finances are also in a good position and it was great news to find out that the Football Foundation are increasing our grant to £219,188 over three years. This is by far the biggest single donation we have received in England. We have also secured funding agreements with South Tyneside (over three years) and North Tyneside Councils (two years); which have enabled us to match fund the Football Foundation grant. It is estimated that overall number ofparticipants for this year’s competition wasaround 8000. The entries were of an extremelyhigh standard and the anti racist message wasput forward in a mature and sophisticatedmanner. The quality of the submitted entriesthis year was substantially higher than previousyears this was demonstrated by the eventualoverall winner.

The Scottish clubs demonstrated their steadfastsupport for the campaign again this year bygenerously donating fantastic prizes. Prizeswere donated by 12 clubs, the SFA and SPL.Canon once again donated digital cameras forthe winners, and of course with the support ofthe Scottish Executive we were once again ableto provide prize winners with cheques rangingfrom £400 to £1000.

The prizes donated by the clubs included signedballs, signed shirts, match tickets for the classand VIP days at clubs for a winner and 3 guests. This year we were also offering the chance tomeet Thierry Henry to all the winners. As withevery year the overall winner is not announceduntil the end of the prize giving ceremony, thisyear the suspense was doubled as the ThierryHenry meeting was due to be raffled at the endof the ceremony also.

As well as the donated prizes Scottish clubswere supportive of the competition in othercapacities also. Almost all the clubs providedplayers to attend the Ceremony. The playerturnout on the day was an improvement on lastyear. We had representatives from: Rangers FC,Celtic FC, Dundee Utd FC, Hearts FC, HibernianFC, Kilmarnock FC, Motherwell FC, PartickThistle FC and of course Scotland Manager AlexMcLeish. The prizes donated by theclubs were presented along with cheques. Afterthe presentation of the prizes everyoneproceeded out on to the pitch for a photo call.

    Support . . .

As usual we worked very closely with the EIS onthis year’s competition. The EIS were responsiblefor all administration, promotion and printingfor this year’s competition. Sheila Harris, PaulBenzie, Kate Blackwell, Veronica Rankin andSimon Hodgson were all part of the supportnetwork working on the Schools Artcompetition from the EIS.

The SFA were also key partners in this year’scompetition. The SFA provided us with the useof the facilities at Hampden on the day as well

as packed lunches and tours of Hampden Parkfor all attendees. Derek Kirkwood (Chief securityadvisor SFA) was on hand throughout the yearto support and advise on any matters.

The Scottish Executive provided us with thefunding to run the competition this year. Thefunding covered the prize money, the displayboards, post event reception etc. The ScottishExecutive have funded the project in variousareas but the support of the competitionhighlights the focus on anti racist education inScotland and the significance of the ShowRacism the Red Card Scotland Schools Artcompetition.

    Report by Laura Fleck

In May Show Racism the Red Card went to thebrand new Wembley Stadium for the EnglishPrize Giving Ceremony of our 8th annual AntiRacist Schools Competition. This completed ahat-trick of national stadiums which sawScottish and Welsh winners rewarded atHampden Park and the Millennium Stadiumrespectively, in the year that saw more thanthree times the number of schools participatingthan in 2006.

Some 500 entries were whittled down by ourjudges to just 29 winning children who – alongwith their teachers and families - joined us at

the home of English football where they werepresented with their awards by a range of pastand present players as well as sponsors andcelebrities. The generosity of football clubs fromall four divisions meant that the pupils wererewarded for their hard work with somefantastic prizes, which included visits toPremiership training grounds such as Chelsea,

After thehonours had been awarded in all sevencategories, 8 year old Ryan Tanner of TickfordPark School in Milton Keynes was revealed to bethe overall prize winner. His outstandingartwork earned him a trip to meet Thierry Henrythis summer, and Baljeet Ghale, President of the

NUT, was on hand to present a laptop kindlydonated by her Union to Ryan’s school. Many of our sponsors were present on the day,and we are very grateful for their continuedsupport, which enables us to hold events such asthis. Also enjoying a trip to Wembley werevarious Show Racism the Red Card Patrons, including Warren Barton, David Kelly, BobBolder and Paul Elliot. They were joined bycurrent players from throughout the footballleagues such as SRtRC Patron Chris Powell ofWatford , Efe Sodje of Southend, Lee Harrisonof Barnet and Dagenham and Redbridge playersSam Saunders, Anwar Uddin and Danny Foster.

In addition to posing for pictures with the FACup and marvelling at the Silky Skills of RichardBraithwaite, a highlight of the day for all whoattended was listening to the poetry and storyreadings which reminded our audience why thecampaign to eliminate racism and the sorrow itbrings is so important, so well done to SimritGhatore, Emily Jeffries, Amy Reynolds, Lisa Scottand Sarah Tambo.

Plans are already in place to ensure that the2008 competition is even bigger and better thanever, giving as many young people as possiblethe chance to participate in the campaign andhelp us combat racism in all its forms.

In the last few months the main focus of theoffice staff has been the organisation of thePrize Giving Ceremony of our Anti RacistSchools Competition at the new WembleyStadium. The organisation of the event waslabour intensive and has dominated ourworkloads recently. We managed to secureadditional help in the form of Laura Fleck ournew temporary Administration Support Worker. In her short time with us, Laura has made ahuge difference to the capacity of theorganisation and her contribution was crucial tothe success of the Wembley event. Over 200people attended the event, including patrons, councils, schools and virtually all major sponsorswere represented.

Since the last newsletter we have organised arecord number of events and it has beenfantastic to be able to expand the campaignand work with clubs like Tranmere Rovers,Yeovil and Dagenham and Redbridge for thefirst time. We were given a wonderful welcomeby these clubs and look forward to developingour relationship further next season. I havealready had preliminary discussions with Barnetand Millwall about holding events in the firstfew weeks of the new season and I amconfident that we will manage to hold at least35 events this year.

The highlight of the season for me has to bethe Liverpool FC event at Anfield. Meeting AlanKennedy, the only British player to score thewinning goal in two European Cup Finals wasan honour. Witnessing the way an icon likeJohn Barnes can engage with youngsters ontheir level about the issues affecting their dailylives was an inspiration.
