ERHS Extracurricular Activities presentation for 9th and 10th grades in auditorium during period 6 on Tuesday, September 27th. News and Announcements ERHS Calendar - Week of 9/26/11 Dear ERHS Students and Community, As I sit in my office, just back from the 9th Grade trip to the FDR Museum & Library and Ramapo Camp, I am reflecting on the amazing group of new students that have joined us this year. While at the FDR Presidential Library, students were able to learn about the impact of Eleanor Roosevelt, as First Lady, truly defining the position and her lifelong work fighting for the rights of others everywhere as "first lady of the world". Our students watched an informational video that chronicled her life, giving them perspective on our school's namesake. They also toured the grounds at Hyde Park and visited the home of the Roosevelt family. While visiting the gift shop, I could not resist buying some books including a book of quotes, entitled Quotable Eleanor, from Mrs. Roosevelt. Her passion for life and eloquence are captured in her many quotable statements. Here are a couple that stand out to me... "It takes a good home and a good school to prepare young people for citizenship in a democracy and even then they will have to go on learning throughout life." This is our charge, that we work together with our young people to help them become the finest people they can be, now and later in life. "Learn to use your language as carefully and precisely as you can. Try to keep it free from meaningless expletives and vulgarities that are merely evidences of an unimaginative mind." As young people, it is important to realize that your choice of words tells a great deal about you and it is my hope that you work on building your vocabulary to demonstrate your professionalism and growing maturity, individually and collectively. The Class of 2015 then traveled a bit further north to Ramapo Anchorage Camp, where they immediately dove into activities, including high rope challenges, under the watchful eyes of the Ramapo staff and their advisors. Our kids and faculty were cheering them on as they faced these physical challenges throughout the trip. Students hiked, participated in a talent show and roasted marshmallows over an open fire as ghost stories were shared. Today they ended their time at Ramapo with a barbeque. I congratulate the Class of 2015, as they now have become the 10th class of ERHS to travel to Ramapo Camp and experience the bonding ties of working together to overcome challenges. I hope this is a lesson they will remember when they face future obstacles that seem to be impossible at the time. Be true to yourselves and always give your best. This upcoming week our School Leadership Team will meet for the first time to begin looking at our school-wide goals for the year. I wish those of you celebrating Rosh Hashanah a happy and healthy new year. Google Translate http://www.erhsnyc.org/apps/news/show_news.jsp?REC_ID=210700&id=0 1 of 9
