Show Low Welcomes youShow Low is the commercial and tourism hub of the White

Mountains of Arizona. Our rural progressive community wasestablished in 1870 and incorporated in 1953. It is located atan elevation of 6,400 feet in the midst of the largest forest ofPonderosa Pine trees in the United States. And it all beganwith a card game. Marion Clark and Corydon E. Cooley, a fa-mous Indian Scout, were partners and homesteaded their landin 1870, fencing off some 100,000 acres with barbed wire. Partof their ranch is the present town site of Show Low. Someyears later, the two partners had a disagreement and decidedto dissolve the partnership with a game of cards called SevenUp. The winner would buy out the loser. As the story goes, thepartners played all night. On the last hand Cooley needed justone point to win. At that moment, Clark is reported to havesaid, You Show Low and you win! Cooley cut the deck andcame up with the Deuce of Clubs, thus winning the game andthe land, and providing the name for the future town of ShowLow. Today, the main street is called Deuce of Clubs.

Year-round camping, fishing, picnicking,boating and wildlife viewing opportunitiesmake Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area apopular place for residents and visitors.Operated by the Arizona State Parks, lo-cated on the Citys northern border, thisRecreation Area was created by aprivate/public partnership in 1988 be-tween the City of Show Low, U.S. ForestService, Arizona Game and Fish and

Arizona State Parks and private entities.This 800-acre recreation area surroundinga 150-acre lake includes 92 recreationalvehicle/camper hook ups, 31 developedtent sites, five shower buildings with restroom facilities, two handicapped fishingpiers and a contact station. SHOW LOW LAKE PARK

Located on the southern boundary of theCity is Show Low Lake, operated by Recre-ation Resource Management under con-tract with the City of Show Low. Show Low

Lake is located adjacent to Show Low LakeRoad about 1 mile from Hwy 260. This 100acre lake sits at an elevation of 6,500 feet.Adjacent to the lake is Show Low LakeCampground, offering 75 campsites, somewith electric sites. Also available are adump station, shower facility, and smallconvenient seasonal store which offersboat rental, fishing licenses, bait, tackle,drinks and snacks. WOODLAND LAKE PARK

Woodland Lake is a small lake but has beencalled the Crown Jewel. It is convenient toboth residents and vacationers to the ShowLow/Pinetop Lakeside area. It sits at an eleva-tion of 6,892 feet which makes for ideal tem-peratures during early spring, summer andearly fall. The lake is part of Woodland Parkwhich closes at 8:00 PM daily. The lakeswater surface is 18 acres with a maximumdepth of 20 feet. Since it is part of the local irrigation district, it is sometimes drawndown to 10 acres of water surface.

SHOW LOW HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM

The Show Low Historical Society, a cityfunded agency and non-profit entity, wasfounded in 1995 and holds archaeological,cultural, and historical materials related tothe White Mountains of Arizona. In the heartof the museum is a 1912-2012 exhibit de-signed by Carol Grossheim, Assistant Direc-tor. The theme is Show Low Past, Presentand Future. In June of 2002, Show Low experienced the worst scare in its history. The Rodeo Chediski Fire began to bear downon our community. The museum honors thisevent and the men and women who workedtirelessly to save our town. Everyone loves thejail cell. Because the building was formallyused as a police department headquarters, it housed a holding cell. The Silver Creek Railroad Club is building The Last Train to Maverick. HIKING

Hiking throughout The White Mountains isa year-round experience. From the ruggedterrain of the Apache-Sitgreaves NationalForest to the White Mountains Trail System,there are trails for all levels and ages. TheWhite Mountains Trail System consists of200+ miles of trails. It is a series of 25 to 30interconnecting, multi-use trail loops. Mosttrails are also inhabited by watchablewildlife, including elk, bear, mountain lion,antelope, deer, javelina, turkey and quail, aswell as rabbit.

FISHINGWith more than 50 Lakes and Streams manyspecies of fish inhabit the waters, but troutare the big draw. From brook, rainbow,brown, and cutthroat, our lakes are alsohome to bass, walleye, bluegill, catfish,crappie, and northern pike.

HUNTINGThe White Mountains are known for theirabundant stock of wildlife. In accordancewith Arizona Department of Game andWildlife, game hunts are planned and moni-tored throughout the year. The primarygame stock is elk and the area has becomelegendary for world-class hunting. Bear,mountain lion, antelope, deer, javelina,turkey, quail, rabbit and waterfowl are alsofound in this area. The White Mountainsoffer virtual year-round hunting experi-ences.

BIKINGOne of the fastest growing recreation activi-ties is mountain biking in the White Moun-tains. The region is primarily forest, withsome high desert elevations. Throughoutthe White Mountains Trail System, as well
