FOREWORDMinister of Entrepreneur Development

YB DATUK SERIMOHD REDZUAN MD YUSOF Minister of Entrepreneur Development

Malaysia’s vibrant economy is attributed by the contribution of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that account for the majority of 98.5%of the total business establishments in the country. Today, in an increasingly challenging economic environment, SMEs as the key driverof our economic growth, have an even more crucial role in advancing the nation towards becoming a great entrepreneurial country.

Cognisant of the importance of entrepreneur and SME developmentin generating a strong nation of dynamic globally-competitive businesses, the Government led by the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development, has intensified its efforts in implementing proactive and pragmatic policies, strategies and programmes to further spur the growth of local entrepreneurs and SMEs.

In line with the aspiration of the National Entrepreneurship Policy2030 (DKN 2030) of creating a holistic and conducive entrepreneurial ecosystem, the inaugural Future SME Conference 2019 aptly themed ‘Engineering the Future’, is organised to provide entrepreneurs and SMEs, as well as emerging businesses with a significant platform to explore vast business opportunities in technology, gain insights on future-proofing their businesses and enhance their business potentials well into the future.

With the world economy evolving progressively into a knowledge-driven economy powered by technology, in order to remain competitive and relevant, it is imperative for entrepreneurs and SMEs to embrace technology and innovation, as well as to seek new growth areasin digitalisation prevalent in the era of Industry 4.0.

Against the backdrop of a fast-changing global business landscape, digitalisation is essential to further elevate the growth and sustainabilityof entrepreneurs and SMEs, as it empowers them to transform into viable and efficient businesses with smarter operations, agile processes and faster results. Thus, entrepreneurs and SMEs must boldly seize the various opportunities available to reinforce their digital technology adoption and transformation.

It is my ardent hope that the Future SME Conference 2019 would havean extensive impact on the advancement of entrepreneurs and SMEs ~ fuelling their journey with greater vision, resolve and vigour towards sustainable growth, and ultimately increasing their contribution to the overall economy to 50% of the national GDP, 80% of employment and30% of exports; as well as advertently strengthening Malaysia’s questto be among the top 25 nations in the Global Entrepreneurship Index, amidst others, as envisioned by DKN 2030.

My compliments to SME Corp. Malaysia for organising the Future SME Conference 2019. I also wish to convey my appreciation to the esteemed strategic partners for their support which has contributed to the success of the Conference.

Thank you.
