Mubadala Aerospace has signed an AED4.9 million agreement with UAE University (UAEU) to train the next generation of Emirati technicians to work at Strata’s aircraft composite production facility.

The new initiative, with key modules delivered by professional trainers from Lockheed Martin, builds on the success of existing programmes, which have already resulted in the employment of nearly 100 Emirati staff at Strata over the past two years.

In the presence of HH Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of UAEU, and Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Managing Director and CEO of Mubadala Development Company, the agreement was signed by Homaid Al Shemmari, Executive Director of Mubadala Aerospace business unit, and Dr. Ali Rashid Al Noaimi, Vice Chancellor of UAE University during IDEX.

HH Sheikh Nahayan Al Nahayan said: “As part of the UAE’s commitment to growth and diversification, UAE University is putting in place strong partnerships with local and international companies and institutions, to ensure that we best prepare our students to contribute to the nation’s ongoing success.

“By working with these esteemed partners, the university, which occupies a leading position among world universities in terms of its education and research capabilities, can provide high quality training programmes across key industry sectors that meet the needs of infrastructure services, and the economic and social development in the UAE.”

Dr. Ali Rashid Al Noaimi said: “The cooperative partnership between the University and Mubadala Aerospace will open up new opportunities for young people as they explore how they can play a role in the industry’s future, and we look forward to ongoing collaboration and success.

“The university is committed to

developing programs to the highest global standards and specifications, as we plan for the future requirements of the local and international labor market.”

Homaid Al Shemmari, Executive Director of Mubadala Aerospace and Chairman of Strata, added: “Mubadala Aerospace is proud to support the growth of UAE nationals through this new facility and programme, allowing talented young students to fulfill their potential by becoming an integral part of the UAE’s growing global aerospace industry. This program will introduce an additional 90 to 100 Emirati employees to Strata by early 2015, using the high level technical skills gained to construct composite parts for the world’s leading original equipment manufacturers, including Airbus and Boeing.

Upon completion of the programme, Strata will offer all successful trainees full-time employment, with continued structured training and support as they progress their careers in the aerospace industry.

Boeing and Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Investments Company (ADASI), a Tawazun subsidiary, signed a teaming agreement for the two companies to address the burgeoning Middle East market for unmanned systems.

Speaking at IDEX, representatives of both firms said agreement enables ADASI to provide training, support and marketing services for Boeing’s ScanEagle and Integrator unmanned aircraft systems in the UAE. There will also be prospects to expand into the Middle East and North Africa.

“This agreement advances Boeing’s strategy of partnering with best-in-industry companies such as ADASI,” says Debbie Rub, a vice president and general manager in Boeing Military Aircraft.

“We plan to continue investing and growing in the UAE and the broader Middle East region in order to support US allies’ enduring need for affordable intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance solutions, such as

ScanEagle and Integrator.”The agreement supports the

ongoing drive to develop UAE national capabilities within ADASI. Boeing’s direct involvement with ADASI will open many opportunities for ADASI’s UAE nationals to develop their knowledge and skills through Boeing’s world-leading capabilities and experience in the management and implementation of technical programmes.

“This announcement is an important continuation of our strategy to build aerospace capabilities right here in the Middle East,” says ADASI chairman Homaid Al Shemmari.

“Our home grown expertise, coupled with Boeing’s technical capabilities in unmanned aircraft systems, is a winning combination and one that we look forward to strengthening in the coming years.”

The teaming agreement expands on a previous agreement between ADASI and Insitu, a wholly-owned Boeing subsidiary that makes the ScanEagle and Integrator. That collaboration allowed for support and sustainment of Insitu’s unmanned ISR products and services.

“Boeing continues to demonstrate its enduring commitment to the UAE not just by delivering commercial aircraft and defense systems, but also through solid partnerships such as this latest agreement,” according to Boeing Middle East president Jeff Johnson.

“In this way, we can help the UAE achieve its national objective of providing new career opportunities for its people.”

Emirates Advanced Research and Technology Holdings LLC (EARTH) has developed the world first unmanned vertical takeoff device in partnership with New Zealand based Martin Aircraft Company (MAC).

The device, called VTOL, is on display at the EARTH pavilion at IDEX 2013. MAC’s novelty is the manned vertical takeoff equipment, called the Jetpack, which is also on display. “This is the first time we have gone public with the Jetpack”, said Glenn Martin, founder and chief technical officer at MAC. “We developed and experimented with the technology in complete secrecy. And now, on the good advice of our friends at EARTH, we have chosen IDEX 2013 as its launch platform”. The Jetpack is designed to cater to military and humanitarian needs. It is ideally suited for surveillance, forward supply, emergency transport and medical evacuation.

The upgraded VTOL version also involves close participation of students at Khalifa University. “We have developed a very close working relationship with Khalifa University”, said Dr Khaled Mohammed Al Kaabi, program management office (PMO) manager for aerospace and weapons systems at EARTH. “It is part of our strategy to increase the knowledge base of local students, to stimulate innovative ideas that can eventually cater to needs of the military as well as industry”. Glenn Martin founded MAC in 1998, and the company has since been working on the technology that only recently culminated in the Jetpack and VTOL. And though the company is not listed yet, it aims to go public after raising necessary investment. “I’m pretty hopeful IDEX 2013 will play a part in attracting the attention we need”, he said, adding that there’s not much to worry about in terms of the technology being copied. “We have extensive patenting”, he added.

CAE has leveraged its experience in modelling and simulation to address increased virtual training requirements in the development of what it calls a “Dynamic Synthetic Environment,” or DSE. Combined with the common database (CDB) architecture, what DSE really delivers is enhanced realism, a higher fidelity virtual environment and more effective training, mission rehearsal and decision-making.

Changes in terrain that result from events within the simulated scenario have always been difficult to cater for in real time. DSE makes it possible for scenario designers to provide trainees with a truly dynamic environment, in which those effects become apparent – and, more importantly, exercise a subsequent effect on the unfolding of the scenario – as they actually happen. An artillery strike on a bridge, for example, may make that bridge impassable to vehicles.

DSE now allows run-time changes in the common database, which are then independently written back to storage.

Effectively, this means that commanders and troops involved in a simulation now have an additional level of complexity to deal with – one that increases the ‘fog of war’ effects and adds realism to the decision-making processes that are a major component of the readiness and preparation objectives.

In order to deliver capability, however, DSE needs to be not only dynamic – providing real time changes to the database; but also persistent –

ensuring the impact of changes in the environment continue through the period of the simulation and beyond; based on open data model and format standards like CDB rather than proprietary solutions; and, perhaps most importantly, scalable so that it is able to cater for large, federated networks.

If you need dynamics coupled with persistence, openness and scalability for joint and multi-national training and mission rehearsal, then DSE is a leading technology in the field right now.

BAE Systems Land Systems South Africa revealed its latest manned turret to attendees at IDEX.

The Overhead Manned Turret (OMT) is a new generation, low profile turret designed for vehicles such as Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV) or Mine Protected Vehicles (MPV). The OMT is operated by one crew member and provides self-protection, ground fire support and attack capabilities to the vehicle system with an optimal balance between situational awareness, crew protection and cost.

The system has been modularly designed to support different user requirements. Parameters such as protection level, weapon interface, sighting system and position control mechanism can be configured to suit specific applications. The OMT can be configured to accommodate a range of

weapons from 7.62mm and 12.7mm machine guns, to 40mm grenade launchers. Fitted with the appropriate weapon configuration, the OMT can be effectively utilised against enemy targets.

The basic designated system is equipped with manual turret drives and an optical episcope with integrated aiming mark. All round vision of the battlefield enables outstanding target detection capability, fast reaction time and orientation in urban conditions. Four

smoke grenade launchers are fitted as standard. The latest OMT-ED (Overhead Manned Turret - Electrical Drive) version is based on the basic system and is fitted with additional traverse electrical drives, enabling the operator to engage a target quickly and effortlessly.

“At Land Systems South Africa we continually use our own research and development funds to improve our products to ensure our customers receive the latest technology they require to keep safe on the battlefield,” said Johan Steyn, Managing Director Land Systems South Africa. When configured with a B7 level ballistic protection, the total mass is 550 kg excluding ammunition. The maximum height of 590mm above vehicle deck offers a low-profile solution with good situational awareness and high performance target identification of more than a kilometre, day or night.

DCNS, a byword in all things oceanic, is focusing on its stunning OPV Gowind L’Adroit – which is geared for anti-piracy - at this year’s IDEX, but there’s much more to the story.

DCNS has been in the naval business for 400 years, but recently added the field of renewable to its impressive portfolio. “We’re happy to wear two hats,” says Patrick Bossier, chairman and chief executive officer.

While surfaces vessels – the main centre of attention for BCNS at IDEX – and nuclear subs may be what first springs to mind when talk turns to the French company, the renewable are attracting plenty of interest.

DCNS is a world leader in naval defence but is emerging as significant and innovative player in energy.

“We took the decision to be heavily involved in renewable a few years ago,” says Bossier. “The oceans are vitally important in preserving humanity. We believe the ocean is the most important thing when it comes to preserving the planet’s future.”

So now you can see DCNS for such fields as floating windmills, tidal stream turbines and wave energy.

The floating windmills tick a lot of boxes as they can be taken where the wind is stronger, says Bossier.

“The French Navy and other international navies are interested in what we do with renewable.

“We’re developing fast in that area and are obtaining a share of the international market.” DCNS’ success as an advance technology company with global reach is built on meeting customer needs by deploying exceptional know-how and

unique industrial resources.DCNS offers a wide range of solutions

from civil nuclear engineering to marine renewable energy.

At IDEX the company is pushing the OPV Gowind L’Adroit, an ocean-capable vessel built to perform the full range of maritime and security tasks.

Completed in an exceptionally short time, this OPV includes many shipboard innovations. DCNSS says it is designed for “simplicity an easy customising” to the requirement of the client, including local in-country shipbuilding under technology transfer agreement.

L’Adroit is the first vessel to be designed and built with full provisions for UAV and USV. The ship and its mission system have been designed as an ensemble. This is a success story transferable anywhere. Design standards make it possible to build DCNS OPV in any shipyard in the world with tailor-made industrial solutions. This means any nation can take the opportunity for technology transfer to get affordable access to innovation for a maritime safety and security solution.

The world’s toughest vehicle, the Marauder, has received a high-end fashion makeover in response to growing public interest for a consumer-friendly version, with many inquiries coming from the UAE.

Africa’s largest privatel- owned defence and aerospace business, Paramount Group, regularly receive calls from all over the world, including the Gulf, for a customised personal version of the 16 tonne mine and ballistically protected vehicle. The Marauder underwent a make-over by renowned South African fashion designer Gavin Rajah and a team of stylists.

This entailed the application of thousands of Swarovski crystals and gold, bronze and chrome coloured camouflage. The glittering vehicle was unveiled in front of 60,000 people at IDEX. A top international model dressed in a matching ball-gown and holding a falcon made the event even more spectacular. The vehicle will not be for sale to consumers, according to the company. However, the way inquiries are coming in many pundits feel the

company will one day have to make a consumer-oriented vehicle, particular for the Gulf. Ivor Ichikowitz, founder and executive chairman of Paramount Group, says that while ‘making over’ the world-famous armoured vehicle was somewhat light-hearted, it is important to note that the Marauder is designed to undertake a serious role as an armoured personnel carrier. “We have designed

this customised vehicle to celebrate the Marauder’s on-going reign as the world’s toughest vehicle.” Designer, Gavin Rajah is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador with a fashion house in Cape Town and Paris. His work has featured in international publications such as Vogue and he has dressed celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé, Cameron Diaz and Tina Turner.

When amphibious assault ship HMS Ocean, the UK Royal Navy’s largest ship, played a military support role in the London Olympics last summer, the vessel had been made ready for its task by Babcock, as part of the company’s role heading the amphibious Class Output Management (COM) team within the Surface Ship Support Alliance (SSSA - an alliance formed in 2009 between the Ministry of Defence, Babcock and BAE Systems). The COM approach, introduced by the SSSA, has revolutionised the way surface ships are supported through life to reduce costs and increase ship availability, and substantial potential annual savings are anticipated.

The COM approach moves away from the MoD-led teams to an industry-led

COM team structure (a single cohesive team drawn from the MoD, Royal Navy and industry) for each class of vessel. The COM teams jointly plan and provide timely and efficient support for the ships, and provide a single point of contact for all day-to-day matters relating to warship support. Following the success of the two year proof-of-concept pilot, which demonstrated the COM approach to be an efficient, effective and sustainable

support solution, phase two now sees full implementation of COM across all legacy in-service platforms.

Importantly, this full-implementation phase of COM applies lessons learnt during the pilot phase, such as the critical importance of building reliable knowledge of the material state of the vessel in advance of upkeep work, and the value of enabling and empowering industry to undertake planning in accordance with this knowledge, while the MoD remains the platform duty holder and strategic class authority. It is anticipated that significant savings can be made in the upkeep, fleet time and design budgets by implementing COM across all in-service classes, with improvements in areas such as maintenance definition, planning and execution, and supply chain maintenance and operation.

Greece maintains good defence relations with the UAE and believes both countries have a strategic interest in further bolstering that relationship, Greece’s Minister of National Defence has said.

Panos Panagiotopoulos, whose country is a key participant in IDEX 2013, said Greece and the UAE have common interests to maintain security in their respective regions.

“I notice with great satisfaction that our excellent relations in the defence domain keep on improving and upgrading constantly. Both countries share the common interest to maintain a security environment in their wider areas,” he told Nation shield show daily

“Thus, they have a strategic interest in upgrading their existing defence cooperation. It is well-known that international cooperation is a must for all Ministries of Defence and it is natural to try to cooperate always better with traditionally friendly countries.”

He said the UAE and Greece, through bilateral consultations, seek to identify areas of cooperation contributing to the mutual improvement of their armed forces.

“Greece is a key country for the stability of the International Security system of the Southeastern Mediterranean and Middle East region ….despite the economic restrains in our budget we continue to have the adequate military capability and our armed forces are among the best trained in the wider area….actually, we are training officers of UAE in our military academies and also in our defence military industry.”

He said three corporations with state participation (Hellenic Defence Systems, Hellenic Aerospace Industry and the Hellenic Vehicle Industry) and six private enterprises (Sunlight, MilTech, Theon, ELMON and Hellenic Shipyards) are exhibiting at IDEX.

“The Hellenic government and myself highly appreciate and acknowledge the value and the importance of IDEX 2013 as an international event, which demonstrates the latest technology and achievements across all sectors of defence,” he said.

Amphibious Assault Bridge (AAB) is a bridge and ferry system designed and developed by FNSS for armed forces’ fast and safe transport across the rivers, inland waterways, lakes, and various water bodies in the battlefield.

There has been a huge amount of interest in the product on the FNSS stand at IDEX.

It is designed as a high-mobility 8x8 vehicle for land operations. For ferry and bridging operations, its pontoons extend outwards from the body. It has retractable axles and two pump jets that enable the amphibious operations and 360° movements in the water. The system can operate in water currents of approximately 2.5m/s. Each AAB system carries four ramps to join vehicles for ferry operations or bridging operations.

As a ferry, one AAB system can transport MLC21 tracked vehicles. By deploying the ramps, which are carried by a hydraulic crane on the AAB system, and joining two systems, MLC70 tracked vehicles can be transported.

By coupling three systems from ramp to ramp MLC100 wheeled vehicles can be transported through a river. As well as the role as a ferry, 12 (or more) AAB systems can be coupled to form a 150m (or more) long bridge for crossing of vehicles up to MLC100 wheeled vehicles.

AAB system has automatic fire suppression system, self-recovery winch, A/C system and overpressure NBC system as standard. It also

has a standard anchoring system (both emergency and land anchoring systems), ballistic protection, and easy fault detection with CAN system.

AAB system is designed as an integral bridging system with its high mobility and amphibious characteristic. Without any need of support systems, AAB system is a self-sufficient bridging system for land and water operations. AAB Systems are currently in use by Turkish Armed Forces and serial production is still ongoing.

The aircraft’s multi-role, multi-mission capability is demonstrated daily by meeting the airlift needs of 72 countries. Be it combat delivery, special missions, aerial refueling, search and rescue, firefighting, weather reconnaissance, armed ISR, medevac or the strategic and last tactical mile resupply of ground forces, the C-130 is always ready.

Fifteen countries have already selected the C-130J Super Hercules to meet their airlift requirements. Whether it’s recapitalisation of existing fleets or new operators seeking proven airlift performance and capability, the C-130J is always the logical, low risk, affordable, proven answer.

The Lockheed Martin C-130J Super

Hercules is the most advanced airlifter ever built. The C-130J combines the latest in aerospace technology with a proven, rugged airframe design, resulting in an aircraft that gives an operator more capability with greater operational efficiency.

The net effect of these improvements is enhanced performance of the aircraft, and greater reliability of the systems

and components. For instance, when compared with legacy C130 models, the C-130J can provide 40 percent greater range, a 40 per cent higher cruising ceiling, a 50 percent decrease in time-to-climb, a 21 percent increase in maximum speed, and a 41 per cent decrease in maximum effort takeoff run. A key to the C-130J’s increased performance is the new propulsion systems.

A respected UAE flight school has unveiled three new helicopter hangars to support its expanding business. The deal was awarded to a British company.

Rubb Buildings says it has won the order to provide three 23.4m x 36m steel and aluminium hybrid EFASS structures to Horizon Flight Academy of the UAE.

Hareb Thani Hareb Al Dhaheri, Horizon CEO says: “We chose Rubb for their reputation in design, development and deployment of temporary hangars. The installation of our hangars was speedy and efficient, the project was completed on time and as promised.”

The high flying academy is based at Al Ain International Airport and has been purpose- built for flight training. It has set the benchmark for pilot training in the Middle East, offering fixed wing and helicopter pilot courses.

Its fleet includes Cessna 172SP,

Diamond DA42, Bell 206 and Bell 407 aircraft and flight simulators. The hangars will be used for the storage and maintenance of the fleet helicopters, according to the company.

Horizon first viewed Rubb’s state-of-the-art hangar system at IDEX 2011 and the relationship grew from there. The Horizon team visited Rubb’s manufacturing plant in Gateshead, UK, and personnel from Rubb travelled to Al Ain to assist with site assessments and oversee the installation of the structures.

Rubb is currently promoting its

Expeditionary Forces Aircraft Shelter System (EFASS) at IDEX again. The EFASS shelter system, which features hangars, sunshades and warehouses, is uniquely suitable for the storage and maintenance of aviation equipment and operations. The system is designed to be rapidly deployed and quickly erected anywhere in the world. The main body of each Horizon hangar was constructed using a number of steel fabricated components together with uniquely designed steel roof and leg sections, that bolt together to form the span trusses.

An Italian defence firm with a presence in the UAE is showcasing its latest sensors and naval combat management systems at IDEX, adding that it has just delivered combat management systems for a UAE Navy Corvette.

Selex ES, an affiliate of the Italian defence conglomerate Finmeccanica, says it is also displaying surveillance mission systems for unmanned and manned platforms and leading-edge AESA radars that have been proven operationally worldwide.

“Selex ES’s presence in the UAE to

date has seen the company providing integrated naval systems for combat management, naval radars and fire control systems, missile electronics and military radios,” it says.

In a statement, the company says it has supplied over 6,000 Personal Role Radios to Land Forces and Special Operations Command and is currently providing equipment, integrated combat systems, support and services to both the UAE Navy and Coast Guard for more than 20 ships of various sizes.

“As part of these activities, Selex ES has just delivered the first combat management system for the UAE’s

Buynunah-class corvette.”In the UAE, Selex ES also works

through the joint venture Abu Dhabi Systems Integration (ADSI) which focuses on systems engineering, integration and complete technical support, it said.

“ADSI is being developed to compete autonomously in the UAE and the wider Region and Selex ES is actively seeking to further develop its technical collaborations with UAE companies such as Emirates Advanced Investments (EAI) for AESA radar, active and semi-active EO seekers and the VigilX enhanced airborne vision system.”

IDEX is a testament to the discipline and high standards of the UAE defence forces, said Lt Gen Naresh Marwah, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) of the Indian army, during an exclusive interview with Nation Shield.

Gen Marwah said the precision with which such a large setup has been handled so immaculately, especially the spectacular opening ceremony, speaks volumes about the professional ability of the UAE military.

He was also all praise for the topics brought under discussion at the Global Defence Forum that marked the official opening of IDEX 2013.

“Most topics of discussion, especially the changing nature of warfare, are very pertinent to the South Asian theatre” he said. “They set the tone for some very meaningful discussions I’ve had with counterparts from across the world over the last couple of days”.

Behind the scenes In addition to showcasing military hardware, events like IDEX provide a platform for the world’s leading defence and military minds to interact and exchange views about monumental changes sweeping the industry.

“Our age is marked by inter-

dependability and inter-operability”, said Gen Marwah, adding that such events facilitate military-to-military communication with a wide variety of players. It also helps senior generals to translate wider strategic visions of respective political leaders into tangible on-ground results. “I have had the pleasure of hearing a number of my counterparts talk about important developments in our field. It gives us a good idea about how senior military strategists are thinking about significant developments. I’ve also had the opportunity to present my understanding

of things, which is very important”.Exhibitions like IDEX also provide

easy access to technological advances in the armament industry. While some militaries are content with trade and purchase of available equipment, others eye important innovations and novelties, with the idea of adding them to their own production mix. Yet Gen Marwah notes that while technology is essential for the military, and he has keenly observed some items that he would like to explore in greater detail, at the end of the day technological innovation has only a limited role.

The Raytheon and Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture have demonstrated the ability of the Javelin missile to engage targets beyond its current maximum range requirements during a series of tests at Eglin Air Force Base, in Florida in the US.

During the US Army tests, the Javelin system acquired and engaged targets up to 4,750 metres.

“These tests prove that, under favorable conditions, Javelin can have reliable, solid performance as a close-combat weapon system well beyond the current maximum range requirement of 2,500 metres,” says Duane Gooden, Javelin Joint Venture president and Raytheon Javelin programme director. “There were two direct hits on the threat representative target at the extended range.”

Demonstrating Javelin’s extended range performance will further enhance survivability of the dismounted Javelin gunner in combat.

“Most vehicle requirements are for a missile that can engage a target at

4,000-plus metres,” says Barry James, Javelin Joint Venture vice president and Javelin program director in Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control business. “The results of these tests indicate the fire-and-forget Javelin missile can potentially be used in both vehicle and dismounted roles.”

Javelin is the world’s most versatile and lethal one-man-portable, anti-

tank, guided munition and surveillance weapon system. It is made by the Javelin Joint Venture, a partnership between Raytheon Company and Lockheed Martin. Javelin has been adopted by international armed forces around the world. It is currently fielded with the US Army and US Marine Corps and has also been approved for foreign military sales to 12 nations.

The UAE has started production of advanced air-to-ground missiles that can use bombs of up to 500 kg. Tawazun Dynamics, a joint venture between Tawazun Holding and Denel of South Africa, is making Al Tariq missiles, the first to be produced by this venture since it was created in mid-2012.

Officials at Tawazun Dynamics, which is 51 per cent owned by Tawazun Holding, says there are plans to produce more missiles in the future depending on the needs of the UAE and other potential clients.

“The aim of this venture is to help the UAE achieve self-sufficiency in the defence industry, reduce reliance on import of weapons and acquire know-how and technology,” says Wim Strydom, acting operations director at Tawazun Dynamics.

He said the company had been in touch with other countries for possible purchase of this missile but no deals had been signed yet.

“Our products target both the local market and other countries. We are in

touch for possible deals with the armed forces of other countries and I am optimistic in this regard.”

According to a company statement, Al Tariq is a high performance bomb kit that offers a long stand-off range on a number of aircraft.

The modular kit can be used with the 120 kg MK 81, 250 kg MK 82, or 500 kg MK 83 and can be adapted to suit a range of missions and targets. The missile has an autonomous targeting acquisition with long stand-off range while wing kit or motors may be added to increase stand-off range and low-level launch capability.

The statement says the missile’s missions include offensive counter air, including hardened aircraft shelters, runways, aircraft on tarmac, and battlefield interdiction including air defence units and surface to air mission launchers and supply columns.

Day 3 19 Feb

A major Chinese defence manufacturer said yesterday it was negotiating for arms deals with some countries in the Middle East. This follows a successful participation in IDEX 2011 for the first time.

Alit Aerospace Long-March International Trade is showing its advanced defence equipment at IDEX 2013 for the second time, describing IDEX as one of the “biggest and most important” military exhibitions.

Qiu Haitao, assistant general manager of operations and management department at the company, says a large number of military delegates showed interest in its equipment in IDEX 2011 and that the company received even stronger interest in the first day of IDEX 2013.

QIU believes Chinese defence products are on par with Western

weaponry although they are cheaper. He noted that Chinese products are cost effective, cheaper in price but enjoy high performance quality.

“Many delegates came to our stand in 2011, mainly from Africa. Some of them are tied to us in defence contracts while

others showed strong interest in our products,” he said at IDEX yesterday.

New products showcased by the company include M20 ground-to-ground missile system used for battlefield fire support and deep strike. It can provide immediate firepower support in combat and is a kind of deterrent weapon to deal with regional wars.

The missile has a range of between 100 and 280 km and can carry warheads weighing 480 kg.

Another new product is LY 80 medium-range surface-to-air missile system for air defence requirements of war zone operations. It can intercept four targets at the same time at an altitude of between 15 metres and 15 km.

The company is also showcasing an advanced air to ground missile. FT1 is a precision strike weapon, adopts GNSS/INS integrated guidance technology and is characterized by high accuracy.

Nexter has been working in the defence industry for more than two centuries, and is worldwide known for its wide range of ultra-modern systems. The Nexter Group know-how and expertise cover the needs of the three key domains-land, sea and Air. since 1764 and its first gun delivery, Nexter has acquired a broad know-how in artillery.

At IDEX Nexter is showcasing its 105 LG1. The mass of the 105 LG1 gun is less than 1600 kg, and it can be towed by any light off-road vehicle, without any speed limit on the road. It can be air transported (four guns per C 130) and can also be transported under a light helicopter. It can be parachuted or air dropped on a pallet from low altitude.

The 105 LG1 gun is easily operated by a crew of three to five men. It only takes 30 seconds to set it into or take it out of action. The gun can be laid thanks to its inertial positioning and aiming system. A ballistic computer is suggested as an option to increase the autonomy. The 105 LG1 can fire the M1

ammunition range worldwide used. The 11 km range achieved with this type of shell is considerably extended with the use of Nexter long range ammunition, the HE-ER G3, able to strike beyond 17 km. With a five-man gun crew, the 105 LG1 can achieve a firing rate of 12 rounds per minute. Its excellent accuracy and its computerized and instantaneous fire capabilities make the 105 LG1 gun a formidable weapon. With a direct firing capacity of up to 2000m and an

indirect firing range beyond 17 km, the 105 LG1 suited for different and various operational missions. It can be “digitised” by the addition of an inertial positioning and aiming system and a ballistic computer. It can also be connected to a Fire control System (FCS).

The 105 LG1 has been qualified by the French Army and is in service in six different armies, and has been deployed in the Balkans and in Afghanistan where it acquired its combat proven status.

Finmeccanica is participating at IDEX and NAVEX in Abu Dhabi, why?The United Arab Emirates has been, since the late ’70s, a nation of paramount importance for Finmeccanica’s companies and a leading reference country in the Middle East region. Finmeccanica and its companies Alenia Aermacchi, Agusta Westland, Oto Melara, WASS and the new Selex ES are participating to this important biennial event. For us it is firmly established as one of the key defence shows on the international calendar. Finmeccanica’s top management and the CEOs of the participating companies are here, in addition to other Finmeccanica’s JV - like MBDA, Eurofighter Consortium and Elettronica. Our Corporate stand is in the hall 6, in addition we have other areas of exhibition in Navdex and in the Unmanned System Area some of our products are on display.

What are the main objectives for Finmeccanica in the UAE? Finmeccanica has a long-term strategy and it is strongly focused on increasing its commitment to the UAE in a wide range of areas from local collaborations and industrial partnerships, to tailored high education courses in partnership with Italian Universities, with the aim to fully support the UAE vision, development and future challenging programmess. We are continuously increasing our presence in the country with the aim to better promote major commercial agreements and joint ventures in the aeronautics, electronics and high-tech industries sectors, which would significantly enhance the local scientific and technological capabilities.

What is the latest international commercial successes for your group? In January South Korea selected the Agusta Westland AW159 to meet its maritime operational helicopter requirement. The programme includes

the supply of eight AW159 helicopters to the Korean Navy and a comprehensive support and training range of services, and Agusta Westland’s share of the overall contract is valued at about 270 million euro. The AW159s, the latest evolution of the legacy of Lynx helicopters, will perform a wide range of roles, from both shore and ship bases, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, maritime security and maritime surveillanceIn the US, General Dynamics and Alenia Aermacchi, announced recently the signing of a Letter of Intent to join forces and compete for the US Air Force’s T-X trainer programme, which will replace aging T-38 trainer jets and related training systems.

What is the status for the M346 Program in UAE? Our aircraft was selected after the

trials carried out by the UAE AF in the country, and the official announcement was made during IDEX 2009. We are working with the local authorities with the aim to better satisfy all their expectations and requirements. The structure for a contract like this is not easy to manage and there are a lot of ancillary elements to be evaluated, discussed and agreed. Can you inform us about the Selex merging? In order to rationalie the electronic activities inside Finmeccanica Group, it was necessary to have a new business structure. For that reason, a new company called “Selex Electronic Systems” has been operational since January 1. The company will integrate SELEX Galileo, SELEX Elsag and SELEX Sistemi Integrati activities, and is led by Allan Cook and Fabrizio Giulianini, chairman and chief executive officer, respectively. Can you tell us about Finmeccanica’s presence onboard of Cigala Fulgosa, the Italian ship present at Idex ?The ocean patrol vessel Cigala Fulgosi arrived in Abu Dhabi following an intense period of operative activities in the Gulf. The ship, built by Fincantieri Shipyard, has been oriented toward stealth technologies and signature control. The aim was to reduce the vessel vulnerability minimising the Radar Equivalent Surface and infra red signature employing advanced construction technology, design and materials.

The 88.6 m length ship has a stern flight deck and telescopic retractable helicopter’s hangar. This allows the ship to carry out in a flexible way a variety of tasks ranging from patrolling traffic control surveillance to checking sea waters for illegal immigration, surveillance of exclusive economic zones and counter-piracy duties.
