Shout out to Rūma Matai—if you are about school have a look outside their

their classroom for their Matariki themed artwork — it’s AWESOME!

Gemma from Rūma Matai is our Person of the

Week . One of our teachers saw Gemma

making a special effort to help one of the

younger children from Kahikatea the other

morning. The little one was struggling

on her way up the driveway to school, in

awful weather. Gemma went back to help her

& made sure she got to her class safe & sound.

Vision Survey—Thank you

We had a wonderful response to our recent Vision Survey, with 110 parents,

staff, students and Trustees contributing their thoughts. Thank you to all

participants, and congratulations to Gabe Ryan for winning the prize draw –her

name was drawn by Chrissie before she took off on her OE!

Congratulations also to Soane, whose name was

drawn from the student survey. Happy movie

watching to our winners!

Over the next few weeks, I will share the results of the

survey, and how we are making use of these results.

My first report is about responses that relate to our Strengths, Challenges,

Opportunities and Threats—a ‘SCOT Analysis’...

Strengths & Challenges

Relationships and people feature highly as strengths of being a small, caring school. By far the majority

of people in our community appreciate the personal relationships, community-feel and varied

opportunities that we provide for our students, as is expressed within the following sample of parent

quotes from the survey:

“Having a small school that brings a feel of community and relationship based environment” “I love how the small role

means the kids all know each other, are able to get special attention when they need it, have opportunities they

wouldn't get at other schools, and are all able to have a turn being the best at something” “Being a small school has

the lovely opportunity for children to interact and form friendships. Also teachers and principal know all families which is a

great community feeling” “Genuine community spirit where people know and care about each other and help each

other out. Small class sizes also great for the children” “I can feel humanism in here”

However, not everyone agreed with these viewpoints:

“If things / problems / bullying / physically assaults aren’t solved wisely then most likely to have even smaller

number of students/ smaller roll”

Our Top 5 Strengths as a school (according to our adults):

1. People—Teachers, support staff, volunteers, families

2. Community Feel / Relationships (2nd equal)

2. Opportunities to take part in a variety of experiences (2nd equal)

3. Catholic Character

4. Values

Our Year 7&8 students have a slightly different perspective, which is lovely to see:

1. Sports

2. Opportunities to take part in a variety of experiences

3. Catholic Character

4. Environment / Property

Page 3: Shout out to Rūma Matai—if you are about school have a ...concerns with your child’s teacher early—and allow them time to deal with problems that arise. We need all parents’

Challenges identified by our parents related mostly to roll size. Ironically, the benefits of being a small

school also present us with challenges.

1. Small roll size (78% response)

2. Visbility of the school (41% response)

2. Financial (38% response)

3. Reputation (18% response)

“Having a small school is also a great opportunity as well as it's weakness” “less Catholics in community“ “as

religion declines less people want to send their kids to a religious school” “Competing against two

large well established schools”

It is exciting to be able to let you know that so far this year, our school roll has started to grow. For the

first time since the beginning of 2012, the roll is higher at this time of the year, than it was this time last

year. This is helped by the work that our teachers are doing within learning, and the good messages that

many of you are sharing about St Teresa’s—thank you!

Opportunities These strengths and challenges create a lot of opportunities for us as a school. My goal is

for us to use our strengths to overcome our challenges, as suggested by these parents, and I will be

working to lead the redevelopment of a vision that supports this:

“Take advantage of the growing, positive reputation that St T's has built over the last few years to build the roll” “so much of the community's knowledge comes from word of mouth / social media” “St Teresas needs to

communicate its academic success more as kids who have left do well.”

You can help, by spreading the messages you have shared through this survey:

A great environment to grow great kids into great adults :-)” “Inclusive and caring School” “strong values

and supportive staff” “St Teresas is a great little school where every child contributes and has

the opportunity to shine. Smaller classes means children receive individual attention. Children

are exposed to loads of activites and are able to participate more”

Two of our wonderful parents have been helping with opportunities to lift visiblity, by developing new

visuals for us to use in signage, etc for our road entrances (thank you Kirsty and Gwen). We are presently

waiting for our builder to be freed up to put the necessary posts in place! If you can offer some

volunteer post installation time, your help would be very much appreciated.

Other generous parents have also been posting advertising materials around the community (thank you

Rebecca and Deborah), and we are working hard to maintain our online visibility.

Threats, such as financial—are well-managed. The school is in a safe financial position and learning is

always top priority with discretionary spending. Other threats, such as “Negative talk in the community”

“Misconceptions of the school held by parents in the Karori community due to misinformation/rumours”

“Families leaving due to unresolved issues - often telling many in the community about these” can be

dealt with through honest, timely and respectful communication. Please make sure to share any

concerns with your child’s teacher early—and allow them time to deal with problems that arise.

We need all parents’ support—to challenge community misconceptions.

St Teresa’s is a great school—this is your school, so be proud of it so that your children will be too—

and their learning will benefit!

Safety Alert: Social Media Sites

As communicated to our Year 7&8 students and their parents recently, the minimum age limit for social

media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and Musical.ly is 13 Years Old. Please take steps not to allow your

10, 11, 12 year old to have accounts on these sites. They are not mature enough to manage the

potential dangers. Please also check how many profiles they have set up. Thank you for your support.

After School at Karori Library

Please be aware that the Karori Library is not a suitable child-minding service. We have found in

previous years that children who are allowed to be in the library after school sometimes get up to

mishief—including inapproriate use of social media. This is NOT SAFE. We provide an excellent, and safe

after school care option on our school site. Even Year 7&8 children need adequate adult care and

supervision. The more Year 7&8 children that use our After School Care service, the more inviting it will

be for them. Please make full use of the service provided. Thank you.

NZEI Paid Union Meeting

You may be aware of the nationwide crisis in recruiting and retaining teachers. While there are many

more children coming into the school system, there are not enough new teachers being trained. Urgent

and significant changes are needed to ensure that the teaching profession can attract the people it

needs and to ensure class sizes do not start to increase. Our teachers will attend attend union meetings

to discuss this issue as a group. We plan to split the teachers between two available meeting times:

2.00pm on Tuesday 19 June / Wednesday 27 June, to decrease the disruption for our families.

If you are able to collect your child at 1.00pm on one of these days, please let your child’s teacher

know, or complete this form: https://goo.gl/forms/YSXrfuT1BrPU2JFn1

Artsplash is coming around again

Our Artsplash choir will be singing along with a number of other schools at the Michael Fowler Centre on Wednesday

19 September. This year the concert will be at 5pm.

The choir is open to children from Year 3 upwards. If your child likes to sing, do encourage them to come along to the

practices. Every year the children who attend the concert really enjoy the experience.

Practices will be held sometimes in lesson time and sometimes at lunchtime. The children still have time to play outside after

a lunchtime practice. A note goes around to classes to let the children know the practice is happening.

Children are welcome to come along for a few practices to see if they want to be in the choir. Once they decide they are going

to be in the choir they will need to commit to attending all the practices in order to participate in the performance.

You are welcome to contact me with any questions: [email protected] Thank you
