Shout Out to Litter Prevention at Eastlawn! Dale Cryan teaches fourth graders at Eastlawn. Her class is involved in a very interesting

project! “My students are participating in Disney Planet Challenge this year.

http://disney.go.com/planetchallenge/ We have decided to tackle the issue of littering as that

is something that we see constantly around us on our playground and in their neighborhoods.

We have researched littering, the problems it causes and what we can do about it. The students

have come up with a plan of action for educating people about littering and stopping littering at

our school. They have been working very hard and are passionate about this project We have

created signs (with plastic boards, vinyl lettering and permanent markers) that we are going to

place around our school. In addition, the students are creating public service announcements

and video journals about the dangers of littering. We are going to do a "litter" count so that we

can graph whether we are making a difference. (Kids will wear gloves and pick up and count

how much litter is on our campus playground. Then we will do it again once we have the signs

up and see if there is any change.) My students have made signs in English, Spanish, and

Laotian to match their home languages.”

Their litter count is scheduled for next Monday at 10 a.m. Stay tuned to see pictures and hear

their results in an upcoming Shout Out!
