Then click the media and drag it to the TimeLine. You will then see it in the Timeline.

When media is added to the Timeline, you can now toggle between the media from the original Source, and as it appears in the Project. It's important to understand the difference when you are beginning to edit.

For training purposes, remove the clip from the timeline by right clicking within the clip itself in the Timeline and select Remove. This takes the clip off of the TimeLine but it is still available in the Playlist.

You can add more media to the

You can add more media to the Playlist to have on hand for your project as we begin to edit. One easy way to add media is to have 2 windows open - one window showing the media assets and the other one showing Shotcut. Simply click and drag the file(s)from one window to your Playlist.

Timeline Features

The icons on the left of the timeline allow you to mute audio, hide a track, or lock a track so it can't be edited. You can turn these on and off as needed.

Notice that your Timeline will fill in with green if there is a gap in a track. This will happen to the end of the project.

Trimming a Clip

Click on a track in the Timeline to select it. Place your cursor at the start or end of a clip and drag the clip to the right(if at the beginning) or left (if at the end) to shorten it.

You may see a Transition box where there is a gap in the shortened clip to the left or right of another clip in your project. Select the transition box and click either the scissors or the minus icon to remove the box or the gap. If the scissors do not remove the gap, use the minus icon.

Making sure you have selected the correct track to edit, you can also drag the Playhead to a point in a clip and use the Split At Playhead icon to cut the clip into separate clips. Then select the portion you do not want and use the scissors or minus sign to remove it and remove the gap between media. You can use this technique to remove sections of the same clip.

Instead of the scissors or the minus sign, you can select the Horseshoe icon, drag and the clips will snap together.

Another method to edit a clip is to use Open File > browse in your computer's directory to select a video file, and it will appear in the player.

Use the left and right arrows underneath the Preview window to trim your video.

Then at the bottom of the Playlist, click the plus sign to add the selected clip to it.

Drag the clip to a track in the Timeline.

To view and change the Properties of a clip, (1) select the clip in the Timeline, then (2) select Properties in the Menu bar, then (3) view the information about your clip.

To create a simple cross dissolve transition, select one clip in the timeline and drag it over an adjacent clip. You will then see a purple and blue box between the clips. If you drag the Playhead a bit before the transition and click play, you can preview how it looks in the Preview window.

To change the duration of the transition, position your mouse at either edge of the transition box and drag it to the left or right. A fatter box means the transition from one clip to another will take more time. A thinner box means the transition time will be shorter.

There are other properties of the transition you can change. With the transition box selected, go to Properties and view a few options. Notice that if your clips both have audio, the audio will also cross fade.

You can also change the transition by clicking on the down arrow and selecting a different one.

Locate the Fade In Video andFade Out Video filter and select one or both.

(If you click on the asterisk to the left of a filter, that will add that filter to your Favorite filters.)

The Properties window details the filter selected.

In the timeline, you should see a gray slice at the beginning

beginning or end of your clip, depending on which filter you used. This example shows a fade out filter.

Mouse over the gray slice until you see a blinking black circle. You can drag the circle to the left or right to lengthen or shorten the duration of the fade.

You can do the same fade in and out with an audio clip selected.

Click Filters and then select the icon that looks like a disc.

Try applying additional filters. You can add more or remove

remove ones easily.

If you make changes to the filter, save the new filter. You will need to supply a name.

Position the Playhead where you want your text to appear. If you only want it to appear for a limited time during a clip, use the Split at Playhead tool at the start and end point for the time you want the text to appear. There is no other way to limit the duration that the text appears in your project.

For this example, I split the clip at the 2 points indicated by the yellow arrows.

Make sure the section in which you want your text to appear is selected.

Next, go to Filters and select the Text filter for video. (no screenshot for this, see if you can do it!)

Once the Text filter is selected, add the text you want to display.

To view all of the formatting options, click and drag the series of dots at the bottom right side and center bottom of the Filters window.

To change the style and size of your font, click the box as shown in the screenshot, and then click on the button that shows the current font and size.

Make your selections and click OK when done.

Alternatively, once your text has been entered, you can place the Playhead in the clip where the text is now located, resize the text by clicking in the text box on a corner and moving your mouse inward.

Once your project is done, you will need to Export it as a video file.

Make sure you are exporting from the Timeline. A good format to choose is .mp4 since it can be played on almost any media player.

Click Export File. Then decide where to save the exported video.

The Jobs window will open and you can watch the progression of your export.

Browse to where you have exported and watch your video!

Includes green screen, chroma key

The Green screen or chroma key effect lets you add a subject that has been filmed against a green background and place it on top of a background image or video clip.

Add 2 video tracks to the Timeline.

Add your media to the Playlist and place the green screen clip on top of the image or video that you are using for your background.

Make sure the track with the green screen has Compositing turned on so you see a single layer. The background clip should have Compositing turned off so you see 3 layers.

We will be adding 2 filters to the clip with the green screen background.

Note: each clip can have multiple filters.

Select the green screen clip, then click on Filters in the Menu bar.

The Filters panel will open, then click the + sign to select a filter.

Look in the Video Filters and select Chroma Key: Simple.

Click on the eyedropper next to Key color and move it to your green background and click. This will identify the color that will be 'keyed' out. The Key color will change to the color that was selected by the eyedropper.

To adjust the opacity of your green screen content, click and drag the bar found within the Distance meter until your subject looks natural.

To resize and/or move the subject, make sure the green screen clip is selected and then add the video filter to the green screen clip, Size and Position.

You will see a black dot in the center of the clip. To resize your clip, drag the dot around to reveal a corner box, then click on a corner box and drag

Also known as compositing, this technique enables the user to add multiple clips and resize them so they appear as a picture in a picture in your project.

Add the media to your Playlist. The example to the right shows a blue background and an image that will be the PIP. You can have multiple media added as PIPs.

Make sure the background clip is under the PIP clips on your Timeline.

For clips you add above, be sure to click the layer symbol so it shows one layer instead of 3. That will enable compositing (combining individual elements into one).

With the clip selected in the Timeline that will serve as the PIP, add the video Filter Size and Position.

Move the black dot so a corner is revealed and then drag to resize the clip, and move the clip to a different area of the screen. Alternatively, you may use the other settings to the left to adjust
