Syllable
A syllable is a word or part of a word with
1 Vowel Sound
S = 1 (V)
ALL syllables and words MUST have at least one vowel sound.
Pattern: Vowel + Consonant
Say the short vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u.
When you hear a short vowel sound before a consonant sound to close the syllable, the vowel sound will be…short.
VC = short vowel sound
Pattern: Vowel-Consonant-e
When a vowel makes a long sound, it says its letter name.
Say the long vowel sounds: A E I O U
When you hear a long vowel sound before a consonant sound, spell it with the pattern:
Vowel – Consonant – Silent e
VCe = long vowel sound

When you have a 1 syllable base word with a short vowel sound before final (f), (l), (s)…
… use ff, ll, or ss.
