Our courses are designed for musicians, producers and performers – whether you’re a beginner or a professional.

Feedback tells us that you love working with our team of experienced industry professionals. Building on that feedback, we have a mix of returning favourites and brand new projects. Upcoming courses include:

§ An Introduction to Holistic Performance – Alexander technique, yoga and meditation for performers (31 May – 1 June)

§ Dubbin’ is a Must! – reggae and ska for under 18s (5–6 July)

§ Come and Play Motown – be part of our Motown big band for the weekend; all instruments/voices welcome. Age 14+ (26–27 July)

§ Musical Theatre & Opera Singers’ Weekend – one of our most popular courses returns with outstanding tuition in world-class facilities (20–22 June)

§ Beginners’ Guide to Audio Recording – learn how to record live in a professional studio, using industry-standard software to edit and mix the results (17–18 May)

Are you a beginner or experienced singer? A classical musician who’s looking for more playing opportunities? Our large ensembles provide a dynamic and friendly environment in which you can hone your skills.

Running between January and June, our ensembles meet for weekly evening classes, and culminate in a public concert at the end of term.

CHORAL SOCIETY an established choir for beginner and experienced singers – all voice types welcome. Meets on Thursday evenings from 9 January. Membership fee: £100.

SINFONIA for musicians with a minimum of grade 3 (strings) and grade 5 (wind/brass). Meets on Tuesday evenings from 7 January. Membership fee: £170.

COMMUNITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA for classical musicians with a minimum of grade 7 in their chosen instrument. Meets on Tuesday evenings from 28 January. Membership fee: £85.

If you’re aged 10–17 and interested in exploring musical ideas, playing in bands/ ensembles and learning music technology, then our Saturday Music School might be the perfect way to begin your weekends in term-time.

Saturday Music School is a fun but challenging programme of three-hour sessions that are tailored to your abilities and interests, providing outstanding tuition and facilities. As well as gaining recording experience, students will get to perform in two public showcases and may be selected for the conservatoire’s annual Gala Concert.

We offer two routes:

SMS PERFORMANCE Small group lessons with specialist tutors for musicians aged 10–17. You’ll get the chance to perform in string quartets, jazz and rock bands, and pop groups; learn music theory, composition or keyboard skills; and take part in workshops on subjects from reggae and ska to game soundtracks and Indian music.

SMS TECH Designed for musicians aged 13–17 who are interested in music technology and production. The programme covers home recording, studio work, live recording, music for media, microphone techniques and what it’s like to work in the music industry.

Throughout June, July and August, we’re running a number of Summer Schools to help top up your musical skills as well as your tan...

In June, we’re hooking up with the technical team at the O2 Academy in Leeds for our very first Summer School in Pro Sound and Lighting. This two-week course will give budding sound and lighting engineers (age 18+) rare hands-on experience of programming, using the mixing desk and lighting rigs, and working with bands live on-stage at one of the city’s best-equipped music venues. There are only 16 places for this course, so make sure you book early.

Back on campus, we’re running Summer Schools in songwriting (11–13 July), jazz (27 July – 2 August), and film music (26–29

August) – in which participants will learn from experienced industry professionals in our state-of-the-art facilities.

From 12–14 August, Lee and Krish are back to deliver our successful Summer School in studio and songwriting techniques for young musicians, in two groups for those aged 10–13 and 14–17. Bursaries may be available to students from low-income backgrounds for this course – contact [email protected] for details.

Sinfonia is a friendly, welcoming group of adult learners who are passionate about playing classical music. Tutored by conductor Andrew Watkinson, Sinfonia studies three programmes of music each year, with performances for friends and family in an informal setting. Sinfonia will perform in a concert on 1 April 2014. No audition is required, but Sinfonia aims to provide orchestral experience for players who have achieved a minimum standard of grade 3 (strings) and grade 5 (wind/brass). Tutor: Dean McDermott Course Fee: £150 Age: 18+ This 10-week evening class is for players who have ideally completed the First Steps in Piano playing course or who have recently started to play the piano and wish to continue the study of keys, scales, intervals and exercises. Participants will work on playing hands together, aural skills and extending their range outside a five-finger position. Improve your fluency at the keyboard, hand coordination, keyboard skills and harmony knowledge. All material will be taught on digital pianos in a small classroom setting. Tutor: Dean McDermott Course Fee: £150 Age: 18+ This 10-week evening class is for complete beginners to piano with no experience of reading music. Students will be introduced to the keyboard and will learn about how music is constructed, treble clef, aural awareness of pitch and rhythmic values. Tutor: Bob Birch Course Fee: £150 Age: 18+ This practical course will introduce students to some of the key concepts in jazz piano and improvisation, alongside basic theory. Reading music to a basic level would be an advantage, but a desire to learn is more important! By the end of the 10 weeks you will have a good understanding of lead sheets and be able to play from a wide range of jazz repertoire. Tutor: Bob Birch Course Fee: £150 Age: 18+ Learn a variety of standards, looking at stylistic techniques such as block chords, harmonic substitution, accompanying singers and playing solo piano; open your ears to more advanced chord voicing; and study some jazz techniques. As an intermediate/advanced class you will have experience in reading music and perhaps a working knowledge of basic harmony. Tutor: Karen Gourlay Course Fee: £120/bursaries Age: 16+ Based on the ABRSM Classical Music Theory syllabus, this course is designed for musicians who want to develop their theory skills and understanding of harmony and composition. Coursework includes writing specified chords for voice or keyboard, identifying suitable chords for a melody, composing a melody with a modulation to a different key, and questions on short extracts of music focussing on the elements and context of the works. BEGINNERS’ GUIDE TO COMPUTER MUSIC10 May – 11 May 2014 10am–5pm

Tutor: Alex Halliday Course Fee: £125 Age: 18+ This course will teach you the fundamentals of digital audio workstation (DAW) technology and associated processes, including digital audio editing, drum programming, dynamic processing, time based manipulation and fx processing. The course will also incorporate mixing and mastering strategies using generic DAW and third party plugins. You will also look at how traditional songwriting and production have spawned into modern genres from punk to dub step. Tutor: Rob Mitchell Course Fee: £125/bursaries Age: 16+ Suitable for all instrumentalists and rhythm players with some experience on their instrument, this course looks at modes, blues, rhythm changes, time, feel and grooves – with improvisation at the heart of the teaching. You’ll cover techniques for tackling common chord progressions such as the II-V-I and I-VI-II-V through exercises and direct application in the jazz repertoire. Tutors: Rob Mitchell & Anna Uhuru Course Fee: £150 / bursaries Age: 14+ Learn the music and skills to perform the infectious grooves of Motown’s back catalogue. For one weekend you will be part of a Motown band, working in sections – rhythm, strings, horns and vocals – to perform classic tunes from the era; culminating in a recorded, open rehearsal. The course is suitable for musicians with a minimum standard of Grade 5 who read music or have a good ear for parts. FILM MUSIC SUMMER SCHOOL26 August – 29 August 2014 10am–6pm (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday) 10am–8.30pm (Thursday)

Tutors: Brian Morrell, Craig Golding & Stefan Gordon Course Fee: £350 Age: 18+ Learn about the art and science involved in scoring music for the moving image. This four-day course will focus on composition, orchestration, musical awareness and production, with specialist lectures on the conceptualisation and creation of music for the moving image, and practical composition sessions in dedicated Mac labs. This course is designed for young musicians with at least two years of music-making experience who are interested in the creative use of technology to write, record and mix music, and want to learn about working in a studio environment. You’ll come away from the course equipped with recording experience, the confidence to compose and perform, a recording of your work and networking opportunities. Five days (Monday – Friday)

Tutors: Dan Green & Karen Gourlay Course Fee: £225 Age: 16+ This five-day intensive course covers either ABRSM Classical or LCM Pop theory syllabuses up to grade 5, specific to the participant. The course has been carefully designed for students who were unable to take the June 2014 theory exams, who need to re-sit theory exams in November 2014 or need to brush up on their theory knowledge in order to meet undergraduate entry requirements. HOW TO ENROL AND PAYPlaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis on receipt of payment and booking form. Payment must be completed before your place on a short course can be confirmed. Unfortunately, we are unable to reserve any places without payment.

REFUNDS POLICYIn the event of a booking cancellation being received in writing to Leeds College of Music from a participant:

§ More than 14 working days before the event commences: a refund of full fee less a 15% administration charge will apply

§ 14 working days to four working days before the event commences: a 50% refund will apply unless Leeds College of Music can fill the space created by the cancellation, in which it may, at its discretion, refund the full fee less a 15% administration charge

§ Three working days or fewer before the event commences: no refund will be applicable

CONCESSIONSWe are currently unable to offer any concessionary rates for our adult short courses. Bursaries may be available for participants under the age of 18 from low income families via the Leeds Music Education Partnership www.lmep.lcm.ac.uk. Applications with supporting evidence must be made in advance of the course start date (ideally 14 days +) to enable us to process the request. ACCESSThere is full wheelchair access to all Leeds College of Music venues, including wheelchair accessible toilet facilities. Please let us know in advance of any special access requirements. We live in the heart of Leeds’ Quarry Hill cultural quarter – about 100 metres from St Peter’s Street, behind the BBC Yorkshire studios. We’re about 10–15 minutes’ walk from Leeds City railway station, and just over the road from Leeds City bus and coach station.

CAR PARKING

We unfortunately don’t have any car parking space, but we recommend visitors use the multi-storey car park on Harper Street near Leeds Kirkgate Market.
