MAKING Adifference An Innovative Leader We Need

Lifetime resident of Porter County and Valparaiso’s Police Chief Michael Brick-ner is running for Porter County Sheriff because he sees it as an opportunity to provide professional, innovative leader-ship to the Sheriff ’s Department. Chief Brickner has served 28 consecutive years in community law enforcement with the Val-paraiso Police Department and believes this continuous service has allowed him to remain up to date on cutting edge advancements and improvements regard-ing public safety.

During his time as Chief of Police the Valparaiso Police Department has been recognized as one of the premiere police organizations in the State of Indiana. His goals as Sheriff are to implement a philosophy of sound fiscal management, professionalism, accountability, cre-ative resource allocation which includes manpower and scheduling, cutting edge technology, heroin and prescription drug enforcement, safety to residents and, most importantly, safety for our schools.

Chief Brickner has a lengthy list of pro-fessional accomplishments, recognition, and leadership awards achieved during his tenure as a police officer, detective, and now as chief. Just a few of the pro-grams initiated by Chief Brickner and successfully in operation at the police department are:

Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas describes Chief Brickner as “an exceptional leader who is highly respected for his accom-plishments in taking the Valparaiso Police Department to a level few police depart-ments achieve. He is a true professional and will serve the county with the highest distinction.”

If your family has a history of heart disease, there’s a good chance that heart disease could be in your future. So don’t take a chance. Take our free heart risk assessment at PORTERHEALTH.com/HEARTAWARE or CALL 800-453-2330 to schedule your free assessment in person with our screener.

LIVINGhealthyThe Flu Season is ApproachingBe prepared and get vaccinated…

Leaves are changing and a chill is in the air – not to mention coughs, runny noses and sneezes. Fall is here, and with it comes the advent of flu season, which means it’s time to get your annu-al flu immunization.

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious cases can result in hospitalization or death.

The best way to avoid getting the flu is to have an annual flu vaccination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Flu vaccines are offered in many locations, including doctor’s offices, clinics, health departments, pharma-cies and college health centers, as well as by many employers, and even in some schools.

Health experts recommend that adults and children receive a flu vaccine well ahead of the flu season. Seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and generally peaks in the U.S. in January or February, but can continue to occur as late as May.

Just like other vaccinations, the flu vaccine is made from a killed virus. When this virus is injected (flu shot) or inhaled (nasal-spray flu vaccine), your body’s immune system recognizes that a foreign substance is present. It then makes antibodies, which are proteins that attach to the virus. These antibodies signal the

immune system to attack and destroy the virus. The process of antibody generation takes about two weeks. Afterwards, if a live virus enters your body, the immune system can respond and destroy it. Since the flu virus changes every year, last year’s antibodies won’t protect you from this year’s flu. That’s why an annual flu vaccine is necessary.

Who should get vaccinated?

Everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a flu vac-cine this season, according to the CDC. It’s especially impor-tant for some people to get vaccinated, including:

• people who are at high risk of developing serious complica-tions (like pneumonia) if they get sick with the flu

• people who have certain medical conditions including asth-ma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease

• pregnant women• children younger than 5 years of age (and especially those

younger than 2)• people 65 years of age and older• people who live with or care for others who are at high risk

of developing serious complications, including household contacts and caregivers of infants less than 6 months old and healthcare personnel

Who Should Not Be Vaccinated?

Some people should not get a flu vaccine without first consult-ing their doctor. These include:

• people who have had a severe reaction to a flu vaccination• children younger than 6 months of age• people who have a moderate-to-severe illness, with or with-

out a fever (they should wait until they recover to get vac-cinated.)

In addition, anyone who has ever had a severe allergic reaction to eggs or has had a severe allergy to any part of this vaccine should talk with their doctor before having the vaccination.

The flu vaccine is not guaranteed to prevent the flu, but mini-mizes your chances of contracting the flu virus and, if you do get the flu, the vaccine helps to minimize the symptoms

Talk with your doctor about getting your flu shot or any other vac-cinations that you may need. And if you don’t have a doctor, we can help you with that, too. To find a doctor to meet your health needs, call 1-800-541-1861 or visit PorterPhysicianGroup.com.

Ask theDoctorWhat Shorewood Residents are Asking…

Dr. Adam Conn, M.D.

Q: Are there any surgical options to help long-term heartburn or GERD suffers?

A: Most conventional treatments for heartburn are temporary because they treat the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem. Chronic heartburn is likely caused by GERD, or gas-troesophageal reflux disease. This condition triggers an exces-sive amount of gastric juices backwashing into the esophagus, which can cause discomfort. “Patients with severe GERD are finding relief from a surgical procedure called Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF),” said general surgeon Adam Conn, M.D. “During the TIF procedure, we insert a flexible tube through the patient’s mouth, and we reconstruct

a tight valve that prevents the reflux of stomach content into the esophagus,” explained Dr. Conn. “It is done under general anesthesia and takes less than an hour to complete.” Dr. Conn added that most people go home the next day and return to work within a few days.

Dr. Conn is a member of the medical staff at Porter Regional Hospi-tal. He is board certified in surgery and, he and Dr. Jac Cooper per-form the TIF procedures. To schedule an appointment with Associates in Surgery, call 219- 983-6240. precious pets

Al and Carol McMichael enjoyed the Fourth of July weekend with their annual family get-together at “Camp Valpo”. All three of their children traveled with their families to the McMi-chael home in Shorewood. The Atlanta McMichaels: Jeff and his two boys, Jett and Preston arrived early in the week to enjoy some time with Nana and Papa swimming at the pool and boat-ing. Steve and Peggy from Germantown, Wisconsin with their three sons, Matt, Brett and Bryan were the next to arrive, fol-lowed by the Grays Lake, Illinois clan belonging to Connie and Rick; which includes Andrew, Lauren and her fiancé John. We can’t forget the Illinois canine members: Ginger and Lucy!

The family enjoyed, fishing, swimming, the annual cornhole (bag toss) tournament, as well as just old fashion family time! The family especially enjoys this patriotic holiday and it shows in our choice of clothing and our decoration of the boat.

How many people does the company employ? 9

How long has it been in business? 5 Years

What prompted you to start your own business? We had been doing photography out of our home for almost 15 years. When a shop became available in downtown Valparaiso, we decided to start our business, as Cupid Wedding & Portrait Studios. After opening we decided to expand the business and offer Dresses for Bridal and Spe-cial events. After four years downtown it was time to grow and refo-cus our business and we moved to our new location at 1117 Calumet Ave.

Describe what your company does: We are a full service Bridal and Special event Boutique. We sell Wedding, Bridesmaids, Mother of the bride and Flower Girl dresses. we also sell Special event dresses for Prom, Homecoming and black tie events. This includes shoes and accessories. we also do wedding photography as well as Portraits and Senior pictures. Not to leave out the guys, we do Tuxedoes as well. New at this location we also have a full service Hair Salon and Makeup artist. We are your One Stop Shop.

Anything extraordinary/unique that your company does: We keep track of every dress we sell and guarantee that we will not sell the same dress to the same event.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice can you offer to the residents of your neighbor-hood? Before opening our business, I was a retail manager for over a decade. I've taken that experience and added my personal touch to offer the best customer service experience in NW Indiana.

How did you decide on this industry? I decided to expand my store from Photography to incorporate dresses as well when my teen-age daughter was going to high school. We had visited several local stores including a favorite of mine in Chicago and I was shocked at the horrible customer service. I knew I could do a better job and had the ability to give every customer the personal service they deserve.

Tell us about your family: Our two children went to Benjamin Franklin Middle school and are both graduates of VHS.

Your Ultimate Retirement-Planning Checklist

Tune into Making Finance Personal on 560AM Every Sunday at 3 PM

By: Jason W Urbaniak, AIF®

Jason W. Urbaniak, AIF®Managing PartnerWealth Management Group Oak Partners Inc.Crown Point, Valparaiso, Naples, FLLisle, IL P (219) 795-1000www.oakpartners.com

There are many mistakes I see people make in planning their retirement that are easily avoidable. Most are fully aware of what they are, but the lists below address just about all of them; they are included here for you to check off to make sure none drop between the cracks.

1. Do not underestimate your longevity, as Americans are liv-ing much longer now than when you first began planning your retirement. (In 2014, American life expectancy is projected to be

78.49 years; about one out of every four 65-year-olds today will live past age 90, and one out of 10 will live past age 95.)

2. Remember that although inflation is negligible now, there have been many years when it was substantial, and it may very well return during your retirement.

3. You must keep your spouse in the loop: If you either pass on or are unable to act, your spouse must have all the information necessary to make sound decisions.

4. Be aware there will be substantial health care expenses not covered by Medicare, and plan for them. Don't miss any Medi-care deadlines, as you can't back track with Medicare.

5. Make an appointment with your attorney to review and update your will, sign a medical power of attorney and sign a living will. Make an appointment with your accountant to get advice as far as taxes are concerned.

To get started on the retirement planning end of the spec-trum, your financial planner will need a few things from you. We use the answers to build out your financial plan which allows us to test your retirement income strategy versus his-toric market returns. Below are some of the questions I might ask a potential retiree……

What is my total net worth? What am I spending each year? What are my sources of income? What kind and how much life insurance do I have? What expenditure changes do I plan after retiring? Is my estate planning up-to-date?Are my will and health-care issue documents current?Have I named the proper beneficiaries for insurance and retire-ment accounts, etc.?Does my family have access to where all documentation is located?Does my family know my wishes if I am unable to act or die?

The next key question: Where will my retirement income come from and how much is projected in each of these areas?

InvestmentsSocial SecurityPensionProfit-sharingIncome from work after “retirement”Tapping home equityOf course there are special circumstances that could add several additional areas to this list. The homework of starting to answer these questions with your advisor will make your retirement plan just that much more tangible. Until next time,Jason W. Urbaniak, AIF®

You’ve earned the right to get that sports car you’ve always wanted, and now you can have it—sans the guilt from shelling out an exorbitant amount, minus limitations in seating only two, and no scorn from those judgmental ones at the gas pump, either. Four-Door Sports Coupes are a perfect balance between sport and luxury, egotism and practicality, edgy and elegant, power and efficiency. Shark-like in their appearance, under $100K, and decked out with the luxuries one would expect from the top shelf manufacturers, these cool, comfortable and capable rides bring a new segment of the population to the buying table. The Mercedes 2014 CLS 550 is available in rear-wheel or 4Matic all-wheel-drive variations powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.7 liter V8 delivering an exhilarating 402 hp. Its standard stop-start system lowers fuel consumption to an EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined for the rear-drive; just 1 mpg less on the 4Matic. Fine-ly engineered accoutrements make the refined ride of the CLS hard to match.

We drove the base model BMW 640i Gran Coupe powered by a 315-hp turbocharged incline six-cylinder engine. Rear wheel drive gave it a heavier, muscular, secure-feeling ride—like a rocket being launched. Everything about it resembles the 6-series 2-door coupe, with a key difference being that its wheelbase is 2.4 inches longer, creating more rear seat leg room and seating three rear passengers, unlike most others in the segment that seat only two. A M-Sport package added to our model’s overall athletic stance and feel.

Audi’s leadership in turbo diesel technology makes the TDI a favorite, delivering 24/28 mpg! Mated to Quattro all-wheel-drive, the A7 delivers an extremely balanced and nimble drive. It also seats 5 passengers and its hatchback body style gives it superior cargo space. Audi’s electronic features also stand out, particularly the nav system with maps provided by Google Earth.

beside it. The 2014 model is stronger and longer, while remaining purely Porsche in form. Inside finish could only be described as “modern sculpture” with plenty of futuristic angles. Its 3.6 liter V-6 gets 310 hp, which it delivers effortlessly with perfect power to weight ratio and no head jarring; rated at 18/28 mpg.

Many who may have never considered Maserati may rethink that now; our test model was delivered for $87,730 and the base starts at $65K. Point and launch this one confidently in any direction, but expect a sportier response with 404 hp via two parallel-mounted low-inertia turbochargers. All this with Q4 all-wheel-drive delivered 15/25 mpg. Pure Italian fashion with dramatic color combinations, the iconic Trident emblem, plenty of ummph, and that sensuous engine growl entices the spirited driver to this one—and there’s room in the back to bring along the kids or some friends you can’t resist showing off to.

The Perfect Balance
