No matter what product you are manufacturing or producing, you aren’t going to stay in business unless you can get your goods to market. The connection

between manufacturing and transport is a vital one. Valley Worldwide Logistics Solutions (VWLS) is here to help you with that vital connection, offering complete domestic and international freight transport services.

“We really are the one source global connection,” said Wayne Larson, Director of Global Logistics. “We are very diversified and work with a wide range of freight and logistics solutions including ground, sea, air and rail.”

The VWLS Duluth office works with a variety of area manufacturers transporting timber, steel, agriculture commodities and more, according to Larson. All shipping containers are railed to one of the following ports—Prince

Rupert, British Columbia,Vancouver, British Columbia, Montreal, Ontario, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mobile, Alabama or New Orleans, Louisiana—then put on a vessel to destinations all over the world.

HistoryVWLS, originally was founded as Valley Express in Fargo, ND, in 1979 to provide truck brokerage services to potato growers in the upper Midwest. Today, Valley Express has the capacity to handle temperature-controlled, dry shipments, specialized, intermodal, hopper bottom, and flatbed traffic. They provide transportation services to thousands of shippers across the continental United States and Canada.

VWLS was added to the parent company in 2013. They applied for and received the federal maritime commission license for oversea shipping containers the same year. VWLS offers a complete range of air, and ocean import/export freight transport services. They have an extensive network of carriers who can accommodate FCL and LCL commercial shipments.

Valley Express also added a permit division that can secure oversize, overweight, over dimensional, wide load, and super load permits, as well as fuel and trip permits in each state jurisdiction.

The parent company Valley Express has their corporate office in Mapleton, ND (Fargo), with 11 offices in Minnesota, North Dakota, Kentucky, Montana and Washington. They have 215 trucks on the road covering the continental United States and Canada, backed by 75 office personnel.

FutureThe parent company is currently investing $7 million in a new truck maintenance facility in Mapleton, ND, as well as Valley Tire, a retail tire outlet for automotive, agriculture, and commercial tires.

What's New at Iron Range MakerspaceIRM’s entrepreneur efforts have helped support 27 small businesses! We continue to support entrepreneur efforts, not just with IRM tools and equipment, but also with NE MN resources.

Recenthighlights:• The Hibbing Daily Tribune printed a front page article

featuring Carter, a youth member who has become quite skilled at the laser, and one of his many mentors, Gary Liubakka.

• Gary Liubakka taught a class on “Fly Fishing” in April; students faced a strong wind as they practiced casting fishing lines outside the Makerspace.

• About 20 women attended a LeanIn “make” event in April. They started building in the fabrication lab, cutting and welding 3 images in steel. Next, they progressed into the wood shop to build 3 pallets to hold the metal structures. Finally, they moved into the clean lab to affix the steel to the wood and stain what became 3 wall hangings. Two were raffled off to

the attendees and one donated to the HOPE Springs 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Hibbing Oncology Patient Emergency Fund.

• Online donations and class registrations are now available.

Lookingforward:• IRM members will be at and encourage others to

attend the Maker Faire at the MN State Fairgrounds on June 2; see more at: http://msp.makerfaire.com/.

Events:Iron Range Makerspace events are open to the public. Shop tours available. Contact Andrew Hanegmon: 218-966-1192 or [email protected]

Thank YouThe April 11 AMFA meeting in Virginia gave attendees a chance to learn as children learn, thanks to Principal Diane Morin and STEM Teacher, Hannah Christenson, from Bay View Elementary School. Their presentation, Orbs, Lines, and Magnets: Coding and Circuit Basics for Kids showed how these tools are used to teach and engage students. Appreciation also goes to RMS Tritec for welcoming AMFA into their facility for a tour.

The State of Manufacturing® survey is the most comprehensive survey of Minnesota’s manufacturers, revealing their perceptions and opinions on the economy and other major issues impacting business. Procedurally, the process involves a survey of over 500 manufacturing executives from small and medium size manufacturing companies, conducted by Rob Autry, a well-known national pollster. The survey is complemented with 15 focus groups, and results are published in a book.

Enterprise Minnesota and its partners will release

the10thannualsurveyresults at the Minneapolis Convention Center on May 17, followed by “release events” in each of the six Minnesota Initiative Foundations regions, including The Northeast Minnesota release on Thursday,May24thinDuluth, Radisson Hotel Duluth-Harborview from 9am - 12pm.

The Trifac Fund – the workers compensation self-insured group for Minnesota manufacturers since 1997 – will report 2017 results to participating members at the Trifac annual meeting on May 21 at Mendota Heights.

A brief preview may be in order. For current year operations, Trifac operated near breakeven, reporting a 3% loss on $5,381,000 of earned premium. However, recent changes in federal tax law combined with a Minnesota regulatory decision (affecting ALL self-insured groups) requires the collection of additional premium (ranging from .34% to 6%) from companies participating in Trifac during specific prior years. The shift in the corporate tax rate from 34% to 21% required a downward revaluation of a deferred tax asset carried on the Trifac

books. A directive from the Department of Commerce to match reserve discounting to investment returns drove an increase in the Fund’s carried reserves.

Both of these adjustments are one-time events being handled in accordance with regulatory requirements. Additional information on Trifac operations, initiatives for work place safety, and support for safety grant awards will be presented at the annual meeting.

New Legislation Impacts Trifac Fund

The planning committee could use your help: donations are needed to stage a successful Silent Auction. Perhaps your company, or a neighboring manufacturing, produces or sells a consumer product that is likely to generate bids at an auction. Or, solicit a donated (or discounted) gift certicate from a local eatery, hotel, pub, or sporting event. And, as always, cash donations are welcome. Contact the office to add your donation to the list of auction items.

The 2018 Golf Committee is once again chaired by Todd Hanson (Productivity, Inc.) with assistance from Mary Brandt (Advanced Minnesota) and Bill Gundersen (WC Gundersen & Associates). If you have a knack for securing sponsorships, golfers, or auction prizes, we’d welcome your participation on the 2018 Golf Committee!

Hahn Health PlanTestimonial - Saving DyCast Specialties 10% A couple months ago we got the referral from MMA and submitted all applications to Hahn Financial Group. Hahn

was able to answer all our questions. They all took the time we needed to understand how the program works.

It wasn’t painful or time-consuming to explore the Hahn program; Hahn made it as seamless as possible. DyCast had faced challenges submitting claims with a clinic in the region, as their billing

department didn’t want to call the phone number provided on the card we handed them. We immediately let Hahn know of this problem; it was taken care of in less

than 24 hours. Hahn made sure everything was taken care of. EBSO, the plan administrator, has been extremely good at keeping us informed where they are at in the process of working on a claim.

What our employees are excited about is the fact that the provider network is nationwide! We made sure to have Mayo Clinic included.

2018MMAGoals1. Revenue generation: Generate non-dues revenue,

with a focus on programs that bring value to member companies.

2. Legislative Advocacy: Provide a unified voice for manufacturers through collaboration with the Minnesota Manufacturers Coalition and other organizations.

3. Image of Manufacturing: Support activities that contribute to a positive perception of manufacturing and manufacturing careers.

All of the above is very positive, in addition to saving DyCast Specialties nearly 10% of where they would have been with the same deductible, same coverage with a national network. - Ed Bolas, DyCast Specialties

High Efficiency Machining Payback #5:

Lower Machine Horsepower

Almost every shop floor has lighter-duty CNC machines that are typically older, smaller or just have a different purpose than some of the more expensive machining centers.

Because High Efficiency Machining (HEM) uses finesse in-stead of force, lower horsepower machines can often be used far more effectively and efficiently than traditional roughing routines. HEM uses small 5-10% roughing step-overs com-pared to traditional 50-75% step-overs. This significantly reduces spindle load and horsepower needs.

To increase material removal rates, HEM uses up-to and over 200% step-downs and radial chip thinning for faster feed rates. All of this is made possible by using dynamically modi-fied roughing motions (i.e., the finesse) to produce a constant chip thickness.

This reduces run time and costs, and therefore generates additional savings by allowing for better usage of existing equipment.

HEM can help you get more out of these machines by cre-ating toolpaths with a smaller step-over but a much deeper step-down. Benefits include:

• Less deflection and risk of tool breakage

• Lower spindle load for reduced wear on the machine

HEM creates toolpaths with a

smaller step-over but a much deeper

step-down.

• Lower horsepower requirements

To summarize -- reduced horsepower requirements can be the HEM game-changer because it helps lighter-duty machines boost shop productivity by generating safe and efficient machining at increased material removal rates.

Roger Peterson is a senior Mastercam training and support consultant at Prototek Engineering, a Chaska, Minnesota based CAD/CAM provider. He can be reached at 952-391-5598 or [email protected] with any questions.

This infographic shows how machining has evolved and improved into today’s HEM capabilities (DYNAMIC MOTION is Mastercam’s version of HEM).
