The following list will provide you with advice on the location of supermarkets, and price comparisons, as well as some useful tips, which will help you to make the right choices.

Your customary eating habits may change, but do not worry; there are always alternative options available.

Remember that it will always be healthier and more economical to prepare your meals using fresh or frozen ingredients rather than buying pre-prepared meals or take-away food. Frozen fruit and vegetables are as good for you as their fresh equivalents but they are often cheaper and can be kept longer.

Try buying your food on a weekly basis with your flatmates or friends, as this will save you time and money. Most supermarkets offer an online ordering and delivery service for a small charge.

Be aware that foods with shorter use by dates are often discounted when the supermarkets are about to close at night. There is usually a small dedicated section in each supermarket for discounted produce.

If you are eating out always ask if there is a discount available for students.

International FoodThere are a wide variety of foods (meat, fruit, vegetables, spices, etc) available from local shops. Edinburgh is a cosmopolitan city and there are specialist and ethnic shops and restaurants throughout the city. Halal meat is readily available and there are a number of stores within 5 minutes of the central campus. Although there are no kosher delicatessens in Edinburgh, you can buy bread and other limited items of food from specialist shops or from some larger supermarkets in Edinburgh.
