REDESIGNAcknowledging communication as an issue that needs consideration, we propose a lightweight feature addition to Craiglist. As shown in our sequence model, users indicated it was difficult to browse Craigslist given only the few links they received from their fellow users. Without more information, it was not possible for them to know which posts had been previously viewed or rejected by their peers (150).

The inclusion of our new feature(s) allows the user to save or share their craigslist ‘session’, which contains ratings and viewing history. This way, multiple users can easily share the same basic information while browsing Craigslist ads. Ratings are implemented with a simple thumbs-up/down indicators, a search filter, and a way to easily e-mail the session link (124). Rating and sharing will aid in communication and decrease the complexity of tracking leads and the redundancy of collaborative group shopping.

DETAILS

• No login is required to use Rate or Share/Save

• If a user is logged in, saved sessions are available from the user’s page, instead of being e-mailed to their address.

• Shared sessions are always sent as hyperlinks via e-mail (form)

• Example: http://pittsburgh.craigslist.com?php_sessid=FLY126_56zG.....

• Creates a shared history, stored in the session.

• Users can filter by history (or ratings)

• Lightweight: requires no additional queries or tables on the database server. Uses little or no additional overhead. Information can easily be stored inside PHP’s session inside a multidimensional array.

• Elegant: does not violate Craigslist’s overall approach of no login required, and e-mail driven data storage.

• Ease of use and ease of implementation

WHY NOT ?

Rather than try to be all things to all people, we chose to add a single simple feature to Craigslist, and solve a communication problem. Unlike your opinions, links with numbers aren’t easily remembered, and sharing links is the foundation of group shopping on Craigslist (as per this CI). By allowing users to be aware of the items their fellow shoppers like/dislike/have viewed, we feel we have significantly enhanced group shopping on Craigslist. We won’t provide here an exhautive list of unimplemented possibilities, but if specific questions arise as to our selection of features or mode of implementation, supplements can be made available upon request. We’re also available for discussion (nothing beats a good conversation!)
