Feature Sabang Regatta Party

The Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism chose the beachfront Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC) to host a party on 19 August, aimed at attracting participants to the inaugural Sabang International Regatta, which was due for a send-off with a Champagne breakfast at ACYC just as this issue of WINDOW went to print.

REGATTA PARTY AT ACYCSABANG

Invited by ACYC, an estimated 300 guests showed up to the promotional party, with a very high proportion actively involved in the yachting scene – the regattza organisers’ key target.

Guests wined and dined on fare prepared in the yacht club’s kitchen and were treated to energetic Indonesian traditional dance performances and live music on stage.

During a break in the entertainment, key members of the regatta organising group presented detailed information about this new yachting event and invited guests to pose questions. Then the partying went on in earnest into the early hours of the morning.

“The yacht club is a perfect waterfront venue for a party; we’ve got one of the best locations on Phuket,” said Commodore Grenville Fordham, adding, “Anyone, member or non-member, who is planning to hold a private party can contact me; we then work together to put a plan and a price in place.”

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the fi rst seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained.

The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the fi nest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection.

The fi rst thing that you will notice are the friendly staff . The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

The Siam Supper Club International

The Siam Supper Club is defi nitely an icon!! It screams the word. There are few places in the world that provoke such a sense of time and place.

The venue is a long bar and grill that has become synonymous with the cool of a bygone age still leaving it's sophisticated imprint. It's cool... in the same way scotch on the rocks is cool. Beautiful... no glorious jazz fi lling the few empty spaces. One of the most interesting collections of sepia black and whites remain true to this same time and place.

When one is at The Siam Supper Club, one has to give up the mantle of tourist or visitor and for a brief time assume the rank of resident or... Phuketian. For when you're at The Siam Supper Club you are well and truly placed in a subtley lit and timbered comfort zone where a cocktail is still a cocktail damn it, the wines are big and the fabulous food reminds you of how things used to be. Ah! The tropics!

Big wines. Fabulous food. Great music.

People Profi le

David Roberts, CEO of Aedas International (architects) in Hong Kong and partner in DaVinci Ristorante Pizzeria in Nai Harn, explains how la dolce vita (the good life) is all in its design.

David Roberts

For further information about DaVinci Ristorante PizzeriaTel: +66 (0)76 289574Website: www.davinciphuket.com

Where are you from? I was born in Wales, and then lived in Birmingham until the age of 14. During the 'winter of discontent' in England, with everyone on strike, my family moved to Tasmania, Australia. In 1988, working as an architect in Melbourne, I was off ered a job opportunity in Hong Kong, where I remain.

When did you fi rst come to Phuket and what made you decide to stay on? I came to Phuket in 1992 to join the King's Cup sailing regatta with a bunch of Hong Kong guys and fell in love with it. For me it was the fresh air and natural beauty, not the nightlife. These days, I spend about one week a month here.

You've recently built a villa in Phuket. What made you decide to build a villa and live here part-time? I'd been visiting Phuket often over the years and bought my fi rst villa here in 2005. Five years ago I thought it was time to put some roots down, and began building a three-bedroom villa on one rai of land initially; we've since expanded the plot into four and a quarter rai. The villa is complete with a cinema and games room, wine cellar and infi nity pool, while still under construction is a three-hole golf course designed by Jon Morrow of Red Mountain and a helipad with a 16-vehicle car park underneath. We've created my idea of what a home is all about. I'm very sociable and we now have an ideal place for entertaining my friends. Though we always see ourselves as having a base in the UK and my business is in Hong Kong, Phuket has become a part of my lifestyle.

You're now a partner in DaVinci restaurant in Nai Harn. With your background in architecture, how and why did you get involved with a restaurant business? I'm an expert in restaurants having eaten in lots! My business partner Mark Norris had moved to Phuket, and his original plan was to develop a retirement village. Then, in 2009, we heard that DaVinci was up for sale. We saw its potential and brought in another partner, Jana Sasik, who manages the daily operations and whose husband Claudio – a chef with experience in Michelin-starred restaurants – provides a lot of guidance. It's exciting to build a business from the ground up, something I hadn't done for 20 years.

DaVinci is evolving into more than just a restaurant. We're getting involved in lifestyle, leisure and real estate, and we're contemplating opening a second restaurant in Bangkok soon. We now have two yachts, a 39ft sailing yacht by Composite Catamarans and a 54' Manhattan Sunseeker, and have hosted regatta events. I believe there's a strong relationship between design and lifestyle; we provide the lifestyle for the design we create.

What kind of car do you drive? Where to start! I love cars and I collect them. In Phuket, I have a Range Rover Sport, one of the launch models in Vesuvius Orange, of which there are only about 200 in the world. I also have a Toyota Hilux for practical purposes, a Honda Jazz that our house guests use, and a vintage mini Mayfair. I also have seven more cars in Hong Kong and the Philippines, including a Jaguar XJ, a Jaguar XK, a Mini Cooper, a Kia Sportage and a Toyota Fortuner. Our next car will be a Range Rover Evoque, a 'baby' Range Rover for my wife. I'm also proud to have on display at DaVinci the V10 Ferrari F1 engine used by Michael Schumacher for his win at the 2004 French Grand Prix, given to us by its designer.

What do you like most about living in Phuket? The air quality is fantastic and I like the climate all year round. Also, I feel connected here. We've become part of the local community through DaVinci.

What's the hardest thing about living here? Going to the airport to leave!

Do you have family here? My wife Leirife, who's from the Philippines, travels with me between here, Hong Kong, the UK and our other island home on Boracay. I have a 17-year-old son named Lloyd Frank Roberts who's at King's School, Canterbury in the UK. He says he wants to become an architect, too, so he may have to do something about his name! (Ed: Similar to famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright) I have a step-daughter, 18, at university in Melbourne and a step-son, 16, in the Philippines. I should also mention Molly the Shih Tzu 'lion dog', our only family member living full-time in Phuket. We're planning to get two Dobermans soon, but we expect Molly to continue her reign over the villa after they arrive!

Are you involved with any local community organisations or charities? I'm currently Chairman of the British Business Association of Phuket (BBAP). We aspire to become one of the premier organisations in Phuket providing the opportunity for informal and relaxed business networking with interesting speakers at events, as well as the opportunity to socialise and meet new friends. We've just relaunched the website www.bbap.org and are keen to welcome new members of all nationalities. I also sponsor and support the education of two children through the Phuket Has Been Good to Us Foundation, and, through DaVinci, support a sailing programme for children at Ao Yon. DaVinci also donated a pontoon to the Ao Chalong Yacht Club earlier this year to improve accessibility to the club as part of our continuing support for the yachting community in Phuket.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My

fi rst feeling when I stepped through

the impressive gates of the Sukko spa

was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are

dressed beautifully in traditional Thai

style and the spa design, infl uenced by

the ancient Siamese capital, creates a

haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I

had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background

music, my mind was fi lled with a

peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the

warm traditional welcome (again from

Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating

Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where

the idea is to fl oat away past stresses

and wish for luck and joy from that

moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist

and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages

lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can

be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal

recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are

totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the

herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your

treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that

left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began

with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric

Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub

was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but

fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist

asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses

that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the

Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face

feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept:

"Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to

exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self

stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for

something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai

Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-

defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax

can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club,

where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet

safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas,

is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from

Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from

Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon

Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It

is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai

style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously

landscaped tropical forest.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes

massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method

to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the

American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in

Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties

of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular

Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for

mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils,

face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife

Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into

a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care

products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top

resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is

never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened

to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are

enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your

choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia,

Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his

hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and

cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made

from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile

extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good

idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and

feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can

be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-

blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E

enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and

has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best

of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a

selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where

you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect

gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the

privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

Long before 'lifestyle design' concept came into vogue there was a group of people in Phuket, guys mostly, who were travelling a decidedly off beat path to success. Alongside Phuket's growth into an international tourism destination, they built their lives and businesses around a love of living loud and fast with motors to match, assaulting the streets with their choppers, Harley-Davidsons, sports bikes and sexy cars.

At the forefront of this big motor lifestyle design is Somnuek 'Nicky' Phonkaew, who has parlayed his passion for roaring engines into a thriving business that keeps stretching into ever more pockets of Phuket life. Starting out with a Patong biker bar more than a decade ago, he now runs a multi-faceted operation that includes a biker-themed resort, Harley tours and rental, big bike repair and detailing, a private villa, and luxury sports car tours.

Stepping into Nicky's Handlebar is like entering the headspace of a manly man in fantasy mode. The bar-restaurant is fi lled to the rafters with biker memorabilia from around the world, and the beer is served quickly and ice-cold. Tucked away behind the bar is a shop with some 20 Harleys and other gleaming big bikes, as well as a hot red Ferrari and yellow Lamborghini. Behind this is

the 27-room Handlebar Hotel, a vivid illustration of Nicky's quirky personality and motorhead aesthetic tastes: loads of colour, cheerful with a bit of grit.

Big-bike elements are infused throughout the design, from the metal sun loungers made from gears to door handles of stainless-steel motor parts and wrenches. The rooms are in steel-toned concrete with rustic teak ceilings, and a large biker-styled lighted logo at the head of the bed. Blue lighting glows from the bed's underside. There are no whips or chains to be seen, but they wouldn't look out of place here.

Helping Nicky bring alive his vision of a motor dreamland was John Underwood, one of Phuket's top designers whose distinctive industrial style and elaborate lighting designs are seen in many top resorts and villas in the region.

Nicky's also formed another unlikely creative partnership with his newest hire, Kevin Shortt from Ireland, who has joined the growing business as General Manager. Polished and clean-cut, looking less a biker than someone who's just stepped off the pages of GQ magazine, Kevin brings in some considerable hospitality experience, having worked for a number of fi ve-star branded resorts around the world including Four Seasons, Banyan Tree and Le Méridien.

It seems that between Kevin's marketing skills and Nicky's extensive motor-lover network they won't have any trouble fi lling the rooms. Indeed, Nicky reveals that for Phuket Bike Week, an event that takes place every April during the Thai Songkran New Year's festival, his hotel is fully booked for the next fi ve years.

The hotel and bar are certainly great places to unwind, but the main attraction at Nicky's remains ... The Ride.

Nicky runs his Harley tour with his cousin Jarod 'Kai' Rakton, who, though quieter and more reserved than Nicky, is probably the world's most cheerful biker. Both born in Phang Nga, they delight in taking groups of fi ve to 13 riders on tours around the back roads and stunning scenery of their home province.

There are few better ways to explore the Andaman region than on a Harley, squinting in the tropical sun while streaking past coconut trees and karsts, being part of a sparkling serpent of bikes rounding the curves, motors revved to the max.

The day tour covers some 250 kilometres, starting in Patong and winding its way up Phuket's west coast, then over the bridge to Phang Nga. A lunch stop on a fl oating restaurant, a visit to a big glittering cave and scenic rides along coastal roads are among the highlights, but it's the camaraderie and thrill of chewing up miles of tarmac on a powerful, beautiful bike that make the tour especially memorable. Those wanting a longer ride can join the Ranong tour, a two-day adventure covering 900 kilometres.

Nicky's amazing and unlikely trip from rural Phang Nga to the bright lights of Patong has been taken fi rmly in the fast lane, but one wonders if, after more than 20 years of riding and married with a three-year-old daughter to care for, he might now be ready to mellow out.

When asked, Nicky smiles slyly, whips out his iPhone and starts a video. Recording from the inside of his Lamborghini on a recent drive, the video camera is fi xed on the speedometer as it zooms from 80 kilometres per hour to 100 to 150, and then climbs further and further up to a heart-stopping number well beyond 250kmh, the sound of the engine screaming in the background.

Slowing down? Not quite yet. Nicky's big ride has only just begun.

Lighting

Long Life : LEDs Have a long life of up to 50,000 hours. Fluorescent tubes are rated 10,000 to 15,000 hours and incandescent bulbs at 1,000 - 2,000 hours. Therefore LEDs have very long shelf life and frequent replacement of LEDs is not required.

Lower Power Consumption : LEDs consume much less power compared to conventional lighting methods. Light output of LEDs is ensured by our highest quality power supply module. Typically, 50% or more savings can be achieved by using LEDs.

Durable : LEDs have no fi lament which can be damaged with external shocks or vibrations. Filaments of fl uorecent lamps and incandescent bulbs are fragile and can easily be damaged.

Cool Light : In contrast to most light sources, LEDs radiate very little heat in the form of Infra Red Radiation that can cause damage to sensitive objects. Whatever little heat is generated is eff ectively dispersed by design of heat sinks of our light fi ttings

Colour Eff ects : LED lighting is found in a wide variety of colours; LEDs do not need special colour lenses or fi lters to change colours. It saves lots of energy and cuts down tremendously on material cost, making them perfect for decorative purposes.

Our last article in the September edition of Shop WINDOW on Lifestyle Magazine explained that House Registration Books (“Tabiaan Baan”) or Blue Book (Thor. Ror. 14) and Yellow Book, for foreigners, (Thor. Ror. 13) should not be confused with an ownership document regarding a building. A House Registration Book is an offi cial document issued by the government and is evidence of a household and of the registered address of the persons living in a building. It also contains information such as house location, house confi guration and house number. It is not strictly necessary to have the name of the owner or foreign occupants in a House Registration Book.

Evidence of the Ownership of a Building

Apart from condominiums, buildings in Thailand do not have an ownership title deed document. Evidence of ownership is proven by either a construction permit (the person named in the document is assumed to be the owner) or the offi cial Thai language building sale agreement issued by the competent land offi ce or by control of the land underneath a building, combined with occupation and exclusive use of that building subject to conditions and facts of use. Investors in real estate in Thailand should generally investigate and establish if the seller can show a construction permit or land offi ce sale agreement. Unregistered houses or houses not built according to the construction permit carry a risk of being deemed to be illegally built unless the variations are verifi ed and approved or fall within an area of discretion. Construction permits must not only be taken into account when investing in real estate in Thailand, but also when building a structure on a land plot or renovating an existing building. In every case where the structure of a building is modifi ed it will be necessary to apply for a construction permit prior commencing the work. It is not possible for a lawyer to establish all the facts necessary to verify the appropriateness of a building, and an independent qualifi ed surveyor should be commissioned to inspect the construction drawings to compare against the actual building.

Application for a Construction Permit

Generally a lease or owner of a building would not need to apply for a construction permit just to work on the interior of the building. A construction permit is needed if a person wishes to construct a building, modify it or move the building. The relevant law for the issuance of a construction permit is the Building Control Act. The Building Control Act deals with the rules and regulations for the appropriate procedure in the construction of property. Particularly, it enumerates the various applications needed for construction, building and restriction requirements and the corresponding penalties for failure to comply with such measures.

The applicant of a construction permit has to submit the required application documents to the sub-district administration organisation (“Or Bor Tor”). Such application documents involve the land documents for the respective land plot, the construction master plan (construction drawings and specifi cation) and the identity papers of the applicant or corporate documents in case of a company. Besides the review of the application documents the competent offi cer will visit the prospective construction side. The Thai authorities must issue the construction permit if the application does not violate Thai law. Besides the Building Control Act the bases for such review is the Town and City Planning Act. This Act deals with the varying use of land as determined by the zones within which they are located. It further prescribes the division of any parcel of land into various zones wherein each is the exclusive venue

of a particular scope of activity – commercial, residential, etc. The aims for the issuance of these two pieces of legislation have been for the sustainable development of land within Thailand and the protection of the natural environment aff ected by construction and development projects.

If after the review of application documents and the site visit the conclusion is that the documents are not suffi cient to issue the construction permit the sub-district administration organization will deny the issuance of the permit and inform the applicant in writing with the reasons for the non-issuance.

Eff ect of a Construction Permit

If the application is approved and the construction permit issued by the sub-district administration organization the person who appears on the document is allowed to build a certain construction on a defi ned land plot. The benefi ciary of the construction permit has the legal permission to build the structure according to the master construction plan presented with the application documents as long as the construction permit is in eff ect. The permit is no longer in eff ect if it is revoked by the competent authority or terminates through elapse of the relevant time period. The validity of a construction permit is between one and three years depending on the size of the construction project. There is the possibility for the applicant to renew the construction permit prior to the expiry date. Any renewals should be scruitinsed very carefully before being relied upon. The applicant has to keep in mind at any time that it has a duty to report the progress of the construction works to the sub-district administration organization and, if requested, schedule a site visit with the offi cers to let them inspect the construction site to confi rm that the construction in progress is in line with the information given in the application for the construction permit.

Try the Local Food. The island has a unique cuisine and both its entrées and desserts are a combination of local and Chinese cooking styles. International visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to sample the mouth-watering and unique off erings of Phuket’s kitchens. We have the inside track on toothsome dishes which will tempt your taste buds. Please allow us to off er a few examples:

Phuket has plenty of choices when it comes to places to see and things to do. This month we’d like to off er you a guide to some activities which will give you an insight into Phuket’s cultural side, away from the usual tourist attractions. We hope that this may enhance your holiday experience and perhaps persuade you to return in the future.

View Antique Buildings.: A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based on tin mining, and even back then was an international centre with a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretch back from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains, and are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations. Rommanee Road is a fi ne example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road. Nowadays, these streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more.

The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the town branch of the Siam City Bank are further examples of architecture from the past. All well worth a visit.

The festival occurs on the fi rst day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar (usually around late September or early October). This year it runs from the September 27 - October 5. The festival mostly takes place within Phuket Town. Enjoy the amazing street processions which usually occur early morning around the town. At the same time, you can sample a wide range of vegetarian food. Choosing a doctorSelecting your own doctor, rather than having one selected for you, is something that many people do not give much thought to. But with so much choice available, what makes a good selection and how can you make a more informed choice about who's going to treat you or your family.

First of all, are they qualifi ed? All doctors in Thailand need to be certifi ed by the Thai Medical Council to practice medicine. To become certifi ed, doctors must complete six years of study and one year of internship, where they practice in a government hospital, before they graduate as a General Practitioner or more commonly named, a GP. If they graduate, they'll be given a license number and a certifi cate issued by the Thai Medical Council.

Generally GPs must then pay back to the government over a three year, or longer, term when they work in the government health system. In reality, some GPs elect not to do this and pay a specifi ed sum back to the government to be excluded from this requirement. Currently the amount is around 400,000 Baht per year, so if a doctor wants to go immediately into private practice after graduating, without working for

the government, it will cost him or her – or the hospital they're hoping to work for – over 1,200,000 Baht.

General Practitioners can then become specialists, such as an Orthopedic Surgeon, Gynaecologist or a Pediatrician. This involves extra study and takes a minimum of three years. Once complete, the surgeon or pediatrician passes the fi nal examination of the relevant Thailand Royal College and is issued another certifi cate to practice in their speciality. Some Thai doctors do their specialist training overseas, for example in America, where they can also become American Board Certifi ed. In reality this means that they've passed the requirements to practice in their fi eld within America.

Most foreigners in Phuket will either go to one of the hospitals or to a private clinic if they become sick or injured. Hospitals have an advantage

over clinics through the large number of doctors that are employed, giving you, the patient, more access to specialists. At the local clinic, the doctor may have only completed initial training, and may have little knowledge about other specialist areas. If you're being treated by a doctor, ask what qualifi cations they have. Better still, ask to see their certifi cates.

Getting recommendations from friends or others on the island is also good advice, and possibly the best way to screen out some doctors who do not treat foreign patients to the level expected. Interestingly, foreigners have very diff erent attitudes towards doctors than the Thais do. Being a doctor in Thailand is an esteemed profession, and many Thais look up to doctors as being ‘superior’. They generally accept what the doctor recommends for them, without questioning or requesting reasons why. Generally foreigners demand more from their doctor, ask more questions and are more informed about their illnesses. In fact, sometimes patients know more about their illness than their doctor! Some Thai doctors will not explain their diagnosis or give adequate information about the treatment they are prescribing. This is because they're not used

to it, and their Thai patients do not require it. Foreigners do, and if your doctor does not give you an adequate explanation or

take the time to satisfy your needs, select one that does. With so many doctors on the island there's a range of choices

available and fi nding one that answers all your questions is essential.

Many foreigners have developed a rapport with their doctor to the extent that after-hours telephone numbers are exchanged

and the doctor is available for house calls and telephone consultations. Having this type of

a relationship with your doctor and taking an

active role in your health care can help you get the best care possible from your doctor. One way to do this is to improve your relationship with your doctor. Don't be afraid to speak up. It's important for you to let your doctor know if you don’t understand something. If you don’t ask questions, your doctor will think you understand everything he or she has told you. If you feel that your doctor is over-prescribing medications, a common practice in Thailand, then complain.

In summary, I recommend looking for a doctor who is rated to give quality care, has trained and is certifi ed to meet your needs, takes steps to prevent illness, for example encouraging you to stop smoking or lose weight, and can treat you at the hospital or clinic of your choice. In addition, they encourage you to ask questions, they listen to you, explain thing clearly and − as you are the customer − they treat you with respect.
