Vincent Tabuteau, Managing Director of Asia Marine, tells about his soggy introduction to Thailand nearly 30 years ago and why he plans to remain here for the long haul.

Where are you from? I was born in France but spent most of my childhood in Brazil.

When did you move to Phuket and why did you come here? I arrived in 1983. I was running a yacht charter in Greece when I heard about a job as a skipper in Phuket. When I got to Bangkok there were fl oods, just like this year. It was a big culture shock – I’d never been to Asia before.

I arrived in Ao Chalong and at time there was nothing there, no pier, no houses. It took me an hour to fi nd a ride to Koh Lone where the boat I was working on was moored. I found the boat and stayed on it through the October monsoons. There was nothing to do, no clients. Soon I found a hotel, a small cabana at Pansea Beach where The Surin resort is now, and started running day tours for them.

What was it like to live and work in Phuket back then? At the time there was no internet, of course, but also no phone, no fax lines – totally isolated. There were no gasoline stations, only barrels with manual pumps. It would take half an hour to fi ll your tank.

We started doing yacht charters to Phang Nga, which at that time had a lot of mystery. There were no tours going there then, no one would go alone. The sea gypsies looked like pirates; it was wild, there were a lot of legends and stories about the bay. At the time Asia was booming and you could see the potential for Phang Nga Bay as a tourist destination. I was pushed by the energy here. There were so many jobs, so many projects.

With my mechanical engineering background I got involved with building junks for a tour operator in Bangkok. In 1991 I moved to Bangkok, to manage the whole company and also for my children to go to school. At the time there were no international schools in Phuket. I spent 20 years in Bangkok managing a large tour operator. Asia Marine (before Thai Marine Leisure) was part of this group of companies since 1989 as marine services provider and cruise operator. We managed the June Bahtra Junk cruise or the Mekhala Teak barges in Bangkok

Tell us something about your current business, Asia Marine. Some years ago when the yacht importation taxes were eradicated we reorganized the company to cover the many dimensions of yachting in Phuket including charters, brokerage, management and insurance. Tourism is very volatile and sensitive to extraordinary events. So we try to remain diversifi ed. Today we manage a fl eet of 15 charter yachts with or without crew and we are the exclusive Thailand dealer for 5 brands of yachts: Catamarans such as Fountaine Pajot, Trawler and Privilege or Monohulls such as HanseYachts or Feeling . We developed a department for luxury yacht charters and have recently launched a new website, www.asiayacht.com, to promote the ever growing number of superyachts coming from Europe to operate in South East Asia .

How’s the coming high season looking? Despite the fi nancial crisis, the bare-boat business is looking good for this high season, even if people tend to request a discount before knowing the price! Also they will put more people on their usual model. On luxury yachts we have added to our fl eet a gorgeous 92-foot sailing boat, “Capricorn“ and a 65-foot Princess, “Isabella Rose“. Both operate day cruises and overnight charters from Phuket. During the latest Monaco Boat Show we were appointed SE Asia Central Agent for the spectacular “Silandra V “, a 75-foot performance sloop built by Nautor Swan. So I am quite optimistic for the long-term. Phuket is now well established as the Asian Riviera. It’s the newest trendy spot to have a boat or operate a charter yacht.

You’ve been active in developing and promoting sustainable tourism. What do you think are the biggest challenges to sustainable tourism in Phuket today? You can see tourism spots being destroyed by their own tourism. Eco-tourism has been part of trying to convince people not to go in that direction, but it’s still a niche. The problem of eco-tourism now is that it’s just a buzzword. People think it’s the same thing as adventure or outdoor tourism like elephant treks. For me, eco-tourism is more about eco-development – it should be done at every level by everyone, from thinking about your hotel air-conditioning to recycling. It will come, but it will come by necessity, not by belief.

Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? I’m the vice-chairman of the Thai Marine Business Association, a professional association for the yachting industry. We try to fi nd a way to communicate with the authorities on issues such as tax law, visas, and the environment, and develop common marketing strategies. After successfully lobbying to remove the 200 per cent import duty on boats, the association went dormant. During the years of political instability since the 2006 coup there was no one to talk to. Now we’re starting to fi nd new energy and direction.

Do you have family here? I live here with my wife, Rattana, who I met in Bangkok. We’ve been married since 1985. Not long after we wed she joined me on my delivery of the fi rst junk to Phuket. We sailed from Bangkok to Phuket via Singapore. She didn’t like it, and still doesn’t like sailing. We have two sons, one at university in Montreal, the other studying hospitality in the UK. They both like to sail but they’re city slickers!

What kind of car do you drive? Why? The company car is one of the smallest you can fi nd. The family car is ... what do you call it? An SUV? I couldn’t even tell you the brand. Toyota maybe? I don’t like cars.

What do you like best about living in Phuket? I like the environment, boats, the people. You can see the sky. I’ve always liked it here. I came here fi rst and always planned to come back. It’s a good place for business, too. Thais are pleasant people to work with – all my staff and colleagues are Thai.

What's the most diffi cult thing about living here? Nothing, really. Nothing specifi c to Phuket. There are more traffi c jams, yes, but this is not unique to Phuket. It’s happening all over Thailand.

What do you think the future holds for you? I have no idea, but I’ll be staying in Phuket. Life is harder in Europe. I have no reason to go back.

What else do you do with your free time, if you have any? I don’t have any free time.

International Primary CurriculumThe IPC focuses children’s learning on a combination of knowledge, skills and understanding. No one can properly predict the nature of work and life opportunities that will be available for today’s primary age children by the time they are adults. Many of the jobs they will have don’t yet exist; especially in the fi elds of ICT, technology and science. So the IPC focuses on a skills-based approach, developing adaptable and resilient globally-minded learners, prepared for the fast-changing world that they’ll be living and working in.

The British Business Association of Phuket (BBAP) was founded in 1998, 13 years ago – when there were few expatriate groups on the island. The driving force behind it was former British Honorary Consul, Alan Cook MBE, and its stated mission was to exchange business information, network, promote Anglo-Thai relations, support selected charities and foster the promotion of tourism and other benefi cial developments.

But, by 2010, there were questions about BBAP’s continued relevance, given the proliferation of other expatriate clubs and associations that had sprung up in the intervening years. Membership and attendance at events had been steadily declining, and there was a growing perception that the BBAP was more social than business, more for south island-based retirees than Phuket business people.

Fast forward to the BBAP AGM February 2011.

My name was put forward to become Chairman; I agreed, but not without some concern about my ability to commit, given my many other business, social and family commitments – not to mention my frenetic travel schedule which sees me spend about a week every month in Hong Kong, London, Phuket and other cities around the world. As it turned out, mine was the only nomination for Chairman, so it was a ‘fait accomplit’. The rest of the 2011 committee was voted in and we boldly embarked on re-launching BBAP as an engaging and relevant association both for those living in Phuket and those interested in all things British.

Surprising myself (and, I expect, others), through careful scheduling, I’ve made all the committee meetings and most BBAP events so far!

The main challenges of this new role were communicating our redefi ned agenda and increasing/diversifying the membership to balance business and social agendas. We prioritised the launch of a new website, which went live in September 2011 to much acclaim from the membership and others; benefi ts to members include a free listing and links to their businesses in Phuket. The website is now being continuously upgraded, providing members with news on upcoming events; soon a forum will allow members to actively voice their views and opinions on how we can further improve the BBAP.

As 2011 progressed, the attendance at Pub Evenings and Monthly Dinners gradually increased, with new members signing up at every event. One important feature of many of our events is interesting and engaging guest speakers. For example, Ferrari F1’s Rory Burn spoke at a recent dinner about his experiences engineering cars for multiple World Champion Michael Schumacker; Paul Moorehouse, former Glitter Band Drummer and now a Phuket real estate entrepreneur, will entertain us at an upcoming Pub Evening.

Feature : BBAP forges ahead

Events such as the Christmas Family Brunch have been reintroduced after a lapse of several years and another family day, in conjunction with Ao Chalong Yacht Club, is planned for Easter 2012 – complete with an Easter egg hunt for the kids as well as a chance for them to try their hand at sailing small boats. BBAP will also play a key role in assisting BBAP member, Honorary Consul Martin Carpenter, to organise events associated with an upcoming visit to Phuket by the British Ambassador.

The membership demographics are now markedly diff erent, with a better balance of younger members and those actively involved in Phuket businesses. This doesn’t mean we’re any less of a social organisation, just that we’re again relevant to our mission as a business association. As part of that mission, we’re now engaging with other associations such as the Australian Chamber of Commerce (Austcham) and the British Chamber of Commerce (BCCT) to organise joint events to further broaden our appeal.

We’ve also put fund raising for Phuket charities back on the agenda and are taking an active role as a campaigner for greater road safety in Phuket, given Britain's role as a leading nation in this most important health and safety issue.

Please visit our website www.bbap.org and come along to one of our events. You’ll be made to feel welcome, you’ll meet some interesting people and even make new business contacts – not to mention new friends on this fabulous island of Phuket.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Open daily 9:00 – 20:00 hrs.Tel: +66 (0)76 271233

10/2 Srisoonthorn Rd., Cherngtalay, Thalang, Phuket 83100Website: www.lemongrasshouse.com

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

PHUKET PROPERTY – STILL A FANTASTIC BUY European property prices declining? Not from where I’m looking.

David Wade is a Director of Tropical Homes Real Estate with offi ces in Kata Beach and LagunaTel: +66 (0)81 787 1108,+66 (0)81 808 8896 Email: [email protected]

We hear a great deal these days about the collapse of the Eurozone, high unemployment in Spain and political turmoil in Italy; Greece, Portugal and Ireland on the verge of bankruptcy and so on. We're also led to believe that property values in these countries, Spain in particular, have taken a nosedive as a result and prices are now a fraction of what they used to be. Don’t believe a word of it! Choice property (not the hundreds of half-fi nished townhomes that were built several kilometers from the beach in desert landscapes that people were lulled into buying during the boom times) in popular destinations are still considerably more expensive than their Phuket counterparts. Try a well-known realtor in Spain, Viva Estates, and search their 'reduced property' section and compare. One typical example: A 170 sqm 2-bedroom ground fl oor condo with no sea view in Estepona, recently reduced from 750,000 Euro to 550,000 Euro. That’s reduced to 22.5 million baht! For 19.5 million baht we can off er a 210 sqm condo with fantastic sea views, only 100 metres from Kata beach.

Another comment I often hear from clients is that they remember coming here 10 years ago when property was cheap. The reality is that 10 years ago there was virtually no high quality property for sale on Phuket. In fact, property prices have changed little since 2007, while the cost of land and construction has increased. Take into consideration all the above and I believe that, once the recession is deemed to be over, we're in for an unprecendented boom here. I know there are those who will think I'm attempting to hype up the market, but I really am basing my statement on the facts.

An explosion in demand from the fastest growing economies in the world within a fi ve-hour fl ight, the eventual recovery of the traditional markets of Europe, a shortage of high quality property and an island for which prime land to build upon is running out. Demand will outstrip supply, confi dence will return and, after several years of doom and gloom, people will want to spend again. There's plenty of money around, but there are just a lot of people who are afraid to spend it at the moment. Only last week I was having dinner with two friends, one of whose prime concern was where he could put his money and sleep soundly. I put this question to a senior banker client of mine in Singapore. This was just part of his reply:

“Your client is not alone; this was a common line of thought during the 2008 fi nancial crisis − the 'more you have, the more you have to lose' scenario. Central banks have already started, and will continue, to crank up the printing presses to inject cash into slowing economies, resulting in the debasement of currencies. Metals will become a store of value, monetisation reversing back to where we were before paper money. There's not a single currency which people are currently happy to be holding in the present global uncertainty. Name any one and I'll give you a variety of reasons why you shouldn't hold it. Also, as interest rates are so low (and look like staying that way for some time) there's no incentive to hold deposits in cash. Globally, governments are looking for more creative ways to take cash away from the population, including greater policing of cross-border transactions, more stringent tax collection and higher direct/indirect taxes.”

He futher went on to say “In my eyes all the above are leading to greater diversifi cation of asset portfolios, away from traditional stores of value such as stocks and deposit accounts, into assets which will still have a value even when a currency is debased, ie fi ne wines, works of art, precious metals and... property. My view is that this situation will continue for some time.”

So there you have it in a nutshell. And thanks Simon for your contribution.

Clients sometimes ask me why property in Phuket is so expensive. To be quite frank, I wonder where they're coming from. Phuket is SE Asia’s premier island resort. Compare it with, say, Majorca which is one of Europe’s most desirable island resorts and the diff erence is still greater. Take balearic-properties.com, just one agent with more than 200 properties for sale over 1 million Euros with the most expensive at 18.5 million Euros. Here are two comparisons of similar quality and locations:

Majorca: A modernist luxury villa in Son Vida of 745 sqm built up area in a 3,850 sqm plot. 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. Super views of the bay. Price: 10 million Euros or 410 million baht.

Phuket: A magnifi cent modernist villa overlooking Nai Thon. 1,480 sqm built up area on a 3,210 sqm plot. 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms. Super views of the bay. Price: US$ 6.45 million or 193 million baht.

I could give many more examples but you can check for yourself. The other big diff erence between the Spanish resorts and Phuket is the amount of property available for sale. Our clients are often shocked to fi nd out how little is available in the price and locations they want. Go to the Costa del Sol and you’ll be shocked how much there is for sale. So why do people still imagine that property is expensive on Phuket yet cheap in Spain? Perhaps they think labour costs are much cheaper here − and in this one respect they're partly right. Basic labour is cheap by European standards, but for the professionals − architects, engineers, surveyors and project managers − there's no diff erence. Materials are no cheaper; in fact most imported materials are more expensive here. There's a greater availability of land on Phuket, but prime plots are now very diffi cult to fi nd and for most people prohibitively expensive. Phuket has a huge global market to aim at, whereas Spain and the rest of southern Europe is still largely dominated by British, German, Dutch and Scandinavian buyers, though as everywhere else Russian buyers are having their impact.

Mediation

Mediation in Thailand is a more informal, and often cost-eff ective, alternative dispute resolution method to arbitration and a Civil Court proceeding and may be initiated from the parties by mutual agreement at any time during the course of a dispute (including during an ongoing arbitration or Civil Court case). A mediation proceeding may, however, also be initiated more formally through the alternative dispute resolution offi ce of the judiciary and in many court proceedings is actually encouraged and required as a precursor to trial. In such cases, an offi cial mediator is appointed by a competent court in Thailand to attempt to encourage the parties to settle out of Court. Mediation is often considered by parties to a contractual dispute where the issues are not complex and the parties a prepared to seek an out-of-court dispute resolution.

Informal mediation, that is mediation without Civil Court involvement, may be binding or non-binding on the parties dependent on whether a there is a mediation agreement in place. Typically, a professional mediator experienced in the commercial activity underlying the dispute (i.e. real estate development; construction agreement etc) is approached by the parties to be appointed. After an appropriate mediator is agreed upon by the mediator, counsel for each side typically submits documentary evidence and a brief on the case to the mediator before the selected date of the mediation. If a binding agreement is in place, and a settlement is reached on the elected date of the mediation, the parties are obligated contractually to perform as agreed under the binding settlement. Generally, the informal mediation is suggested when the costs of litigation or arbitration a ripe to spiral out of control and the parties are keen to settle the case and move on.

Whenever parties to a dispute agree to proceed to mediation, it is key to have a mediation agreement in place detailing the rules of mediation proceeding and the obligations of the parties, whether the mediation is conducted through a court sanction or privately. Generally, this agreement is provided by the mediator (but could be provided by a party to the dispute), and is subject to suggested changes by the parties’ representatives. Most mediation agreements should have a confi dentiality clause in addition to a provision which precludes disclosure of the contents of a mediation to a trial judge to protect the parties in the event the dispute escalates to a civil court proceeding. Furthermore, the mediation agreement should set out the basic rules of evidence for the proceeding and set out how the costs are to be distributed between the parties, and determine whether the mediation should be binding or non-binding on the parties.

Conclusion

Parties to a contract should be aware of all alternative dispute resolution options when entering into a contract. Arbitration may keep proceeding costs down and an award is generally enforceable under Thai law. Furthermore, the Parties may elect to have foreign or locally qualifi ed representatives and an arbitrator if they deem necessary and the proceedings may be conducted in English language (as opposed to Thai in the Thai civil courts) under stipulated rules. Parties should note, however, that arbitration can become protracted in a similar fashion as fi ling a case in a Civil Court as an arbitration proceeding is in many ways akin procedurally to a court case.

Mediation could be a cost eff ective strategy for parties to quickly resolve a dispute where settlement seems to be certain but requires willing parties and careful management. The primary concern with mediation is that the Parties should be eager to settle, and even if a binding agreement to settle is obtained at a mediation proceeding, the parties must be willing to contractually perform the settlement outcome as agreed.

Feature

Happy New Year! This month we introduce the Phuket Hot List, a new series that gives you a closer look into our favourite

areas around the island. We’ve been keeping our eyes and ears alert to the island buzz to discover what’s new, as well as revisiting those sometimes-overlooked spots that remain simmering hot over time. This month, we’re strolling the sands of stylish Surin Beach in search of the best spots to dine, play, and celebrate the tropical life.

Surin Beach,Where Hot Sands Meet High Style

From the Vertigo site, you also get a bird’s eye view of another villa project underway at the impeccable Amanpuri. The luxury villa resort that’s discreetly welcomed royals and rock stars since opening in 1988 is now reaching over to the other side of the cape with a new set of villas, all of which, we hear, have already sold out. World renowned architect Ed Tuttle, who was the original designer of the property and villas 23 years ago, is also the designer of the new villas. Next to Amanpuri, there’s been a shifting of sands, too, at The Surin, which reopened in mid-December after an extensive renovation. The former Chedi resort’s beachside cottages have been superbly spruced up and from what we’ve seen we’re certain they'll bowl over guests yet again with their unbeatable position on the peaceful, pristine Pansea Beach.

Adding to Surin’s abundant assemblage of luxury villas is Vertigo, a new collection of 16 modern villas at truly dizzying heights on Surin Hill. The fi rst villa to appear at Vertigo is the developer’s own Villa Zamani, which has quickly emerged as one of the island’s most popular rental villas, complete with a team of live-in staff , a huge cinema room with hot-red leather theatre seats and fantastic views over Bangtao and Surin bays.

Basic beachwear, sarongs and gaudy cover-ups are as easy to fi nd here as anywhere else on the island, but Surin also brings more elegant tropical fashions to the more discerning sunseeker set. Paul Ropp features handmade Balinese clothing, shoes and jewellery that are quite simply wearable works of art. The silks and cottons are a vision of intricacy, rich colour and tropical fl air, from chic chiff on lingerie to cotton and silk tops with exquisite embroidery. Looking beach-ready fabulous doesn’t come cheap, however, with most items priced between 5,000 and 10,000 baht.

Just across the road is Island Bliss, with cotton and silk leisurewear by Australian designer Cassandra McMillan, who’s extended her range into this bright and friendly Phuket shop after years in Phnom Penh. Her attention to detail and eye for colour add a lavish touch to a distinctly Bohemian style. Our favourites include the hot-pink silk party dress, the soft and billowy white cotton tunics, and the sparkling Indian bangles.

The big players on Surin’s beachfront dining scene are well known: Taste, Pla Seafood and Catch Beach Club. Every year, they keep notching up the Wow Factor with new designs, new menus and new ‘lifestyle’ enticements including yacht charters, stretching ever more broadly across the beachfront (perhaps a little too broadly for some people’s tastes). As a change we thought we’d try out some of the lesser-known Surin dining spots to see how they stack up. Cefalù, next to Taste, is a simple, bright place with white tables set under swaying casuarina trees, with authentic Italian right down to the friendly, fussy Italian host who rushes around constantly checking on his guests. Lunches are especially inviting with all salads at 99 baht, pastas 149 baht, pizzas 169 baht, and a set menu for 250 baht. Those seeking a light lunch won’t fi nd it here: even the salads are gigantic! With a good range of wine to boot, we found Cefalù to be truly magnifi co. It also off ers free delivery service, though dining at the beach is hard to beat.

As a party spot for celebrities and hangers-on, Surin’s not known for its child-friendly activities, but the Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Surin Beach off ers a welcome family escape if the kids tire of the bucket-and-spade routine at the beach. Marriott guests get fi rst dibs, of course, but those staying elsewhere can pick up a day pass (2,000 baht per family per day) to enjoy free reign over the huge swimming pool, waterslides, fi tness centre and Kid’s World play zone. For a bit extra you can cultivate your creative side and join an art or cooking class for children and adults.

After years as a jet-ski-free zone, the Surin scene now has its share of these buzzing little vessels. We’d love to see

them zoom away into the sunset, never to return, but as we’ve

seen at other west-coast Phuket beaches, these ‘no-insurance’ nuisances are likely here to stay.

Good value is sometimes elusive at Surin, so we perked up upon seeing the ‘99 baht happy-hour cocktail’ sign in front of the long-running beachfront Nok Seafood restaurant. The food is fairly well priced, too, with a great selection of tasty Thai seafood dishes, plus some decent pizza for those who pine for a European meal. The casual setting, wooden tables on a sandy fl oor shaded by white parasols and screw pines, is pretty much the postcard-perfect tropical scene. Here, happily, happy hour extends into three, from 4pm-7pm, with 50-baht glasses of Chang beer also on off er.

Off the beach, a Hollywood celebrity chef has been making waves since his recent arrival at Surin Gate Kitchen, especially with his four-course set dinner on Wednesdays for 750 baht that has had Phuket foodies scrambling to book a table. Cudos, meanwhile, has been chalking up some kudos of its own, with its terrifi c tapas, Australian beef, duck breast and other hearty specialties, all in a swanky setting reminiscent of a classic big-city eatery. Its elegant interior and stylish walled garden makes this a perfect place for either a power lunch or a mad martini night on the weekend. Be sure to save some space for the divine crème brûlée or chocolate tart with mixed berry compote.

Big Buddha: If you look southwards from Wat Chalong the skyline is dominated by an enormous statue of the Lord Buddha. Forty-fi ve metres high and fi nished in white marble it is the largest such image in Thailand. Up close it is massively impressive and the elevated site off ers panoramic views of the island. The shrine is still a work-in-progress but the Buddha image is ninety-fi ve per cent complete and the construction scaff olding has now been removed. A museum is planned and there is even talk of constructing a cable-car system from Patong to the site.

Patong's Bangla Road: Many people come to Phuket just to revel in the razzmatazz of Patong’s hotspots but even if your tastes are generally more moderate, you really should not miss the opportunity to visit this international icon of the hedonistic lifestyle. A short street in the heart of down-town Patong, Soi Bangla packs more than a hundred bars, restaurants and discotheques into a single traffi c-free, brightly-lit celebration of glitz which operates from dusk until dawn.

Walking up and down or dropping into throbbing cacophonous homages to Mammon like the Tiger Disco or Rock City will leave you with vivid memories as enduring as those of the beautiful beaches you enjoyed in the daylight hours.

Please come back.

Promthep Cape: Continue on to the southernmost point of the island and you will fi nd Promthep. This viewpoint with excellent parking

and restaurant facilities off ers outstanding views of sandy beaches framed by rocky headlands lapped softly by the azure waters of the Andaman Sea. At sunset, the skies become a horizon-wide kaleidoscope of slowly changing pastel shades; quite unbelievably beautiful.

Wat Chalong: Buddhism is overwhelmingly the dominant religion of Thailand, practised by at least 90% of the population.

Temples (known locally as Wats) are where Thais go to worship and seek spiritual guidance but they are also a focus for

social and cultural activities, and are often spectacular examples of South-East Asian architecture. The largest

and most impressive temple on Phuket is Wat Chalong located on the south of the island on Chao Fa West Road. It is well sign-posted.

Old Phuket Town: Much of Phuket’s development has taken place in the last ten years and the building style is resolutely modern - some say, stridently so; but parts of Phuket City are little changed from a hundred years ago. At that time the Island was a busy trading port and supported a thriving tin-mining industry. The then captains of industry built their prestigious homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese. Narrow housefronts ornately decorated with red and gold, the mystic signs representing sacred guardians of the access, yielded to storied accommodations with tall ceilings and interiors often incorporated delightful gardens. Nowadays the streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more. Well worth a visit.

Useful info

Most of us want to be fit and experts agree that what we eat, when we exercise and how much regular sleep we get all play a factor in keeping ourselves healthy. There are also the risk factors, such as alcohol intake, smoking and obesity that affect many of us − and in Phuket possibly more than in our home countries. Being on a tropical island with a large and vibrant party atmosphere, it's understandable that some of us do drink a little more alcohol than normal as well as adding a few more centimetres to the waistline from eating at the island's great restaurants.

HealthCheck-ups

Having a regular, some say yearly, health check-up makes good sense, and from the increasing numbers of patients using Phuket’s hospitals to see where they stand, it’s becoming a very popular thing to do, even for tourists.

In Phuket, most hospitals off er quick and very reliable health check-ups. One advantage of doing this in Phuket is that you'll usually experience that renowned Thai service, while the prices are extremely reasonable, sometimes costing a fraction of the price paid in some western countries.

Check-ups in Phuket hospitals come in many forms, from basic packages to executive programmes, which include full laboratory and cardiovascular investigations, exercise stress tests and x-rays. Some programmes are even more extensive, including CT scans and complete dental services. Most can be completed in a few hours and results are available within a few days. Because most of Phuket’s better hospitals have all the facilities at the same location, the need to travel to diff erent clinics, laboratories and x-ray facilities is not a factor.

Useful infoHealth Check Ups

Peter Davison is the Manager International Services at Phuket International Hospital.

Tel: +66 (0)76 249400, Email: [email protected]

The main aim of any check-up is to detect illness at an early stage, or better still, prevent illness occurring in the fi rst place. Having a regular check-up also promotes wellness and facilitates prompt, expert and (hopefully) compassionate treatment of injuries and diseases. It's surprising how many conditions are picked up on routine medical check-ups. Diabetes, breast lumps, elevated blood pressure, and skin cancers to name a few.

About 20% of people coming for health check-ups have high blood pressure. This increases to more than 50% in adults over the age of 65. The role of high blood pressure in strokes and heart disease is very clear. Only half of the people with high blood pressure have had the condition diagnosed, and it takes only minutes to check. Also Around 3% of adults are diabetic and, again, only half are aware that they have the condition.

Health check-ups also screen for cancers, such as pap smears for cancer of the cervix and PSA testing for prostate cancer. Cholesterol levels can also be checked, as this also has been linked to your chances of having a heart attack.

But, with all these tests, and a range of hospitals and clinics providing them, how do we choose which is best for us?

Firstly, using cost and discounted prices as a guide to selecting a check-up is not advisable. A cheap programme has fewer tests, whilst an expensive programme can include a range of tests that you don't need. For example, if you're under 30, there's little benefi t in having an exercise stress test unless you have a history of heart disease. The best way forward is to know what type of tests you need. If you don’t know, do some research, or ask the hospitals and providers what is best suited for you. Once you know what tests you actually need, shop around for the programme that fi ts your needs. If you can't fi nd a programme, just request the tests that you want, and make up your own personalised check-up programme.

Having a regular health check-up is inexpensive and makes good sense. Consider it the same as making an investment in your body. Finding out the state of your health now could save you lots of money in the future. It could also save your life.
