#1: MSDS
• A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely with products and materials
#2: Shut off button
• This is a button that controls the main power supply to all machines in the shop. It is used in emergency situations and when you want the power to be turned off and prevented from being turned on
• Needs key
#3: Locked Out Machines
• When a machine has this piece of paper on it, it means it is locked out
• DO NOT OPERATE!• Machine is broke or dangerous to operate• Wait until maintenance is performed
#4: Ventilation • Many processes in the shop ,particularly
welding, produces fumes and clouds that are harmful to breath and should not be inhaled for long periods of time
• Sucks up the fumes and leaves clean air• Should always be on when in shop
#5: Safety Glasses
• Protect your eyes from metal, dirt, grease, fluids, and other debris
• Must be worn AT ALL TIMES in the shop• Must have proper classification
#6: Welding Helmets• Protect face from sparks and pieces of metal• Protect your eyes from flash• Differently shaded lens: Always look up
#7: Welding Gloves
• These are NOT oven mitts• Made of leather• Made to protect your hands from sparks and
debris• DO NOT USE TO PICK UP HOT METAL
#8: Welding Apron
• Made of leather to prevent from burning or catching fire
• Protects you and your clothes from sparks, debris and fire
• MUST BE WORN when in the shop
#9: Fire Extinguisher
• Located near door and near MSDS and other safety equipment for quick location
• Must know how to use• 3 Classes:
#10: Room Ventilation
• Button controls the room ventilation• Dust, debris, fumes, etc accumulate in air
when working in shop• Ventilation sucks out fumes• ALWAYS on when working
#11: Electrodes• Used to conduct current through a work piece
to fuse two pieces together. • Consumable, in the case of gas metal arc
welding or shielded metal arc welding, • Non-consumable, such as in gas tungsten arc
welding
#12: Gas Metal Arc Welding Machine (MIG)
• Used in MIG and TIG welding• Electric arc forms between a
consumable wire electrode and the workpiece metal(s), which heats the workpiece metal(s), causing them to melt, and join.
• Shielding gas feeds through the welding gun, which shields the process from contaminants in the air.
#13: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (stick) Machine
• Uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld.
• Electric current, in the form of either alternating current or direct current from a welding power supply, is used to form an electric arc between the electrode and the metals to be joined
#14: Oxy-Acetylene Torch/ Welder
• Oxygen tank and acetylene tank• Uses regulators to feed oxygen and acetylene
into torch – creates flame• Can use for welding and cutting
#15: Oxygen Tank (Cylinder)
• GREEN TANK and RED HOSE• Very dangerous and is extremely flammable• Under very high pressure (torpedo)• Should be used after torch is lite
#16: Acetylene Tank (Cylinder)
• BLACK TANK and GREEN HOSE• Safer than Oxygen tank but under high
pressure• Use to light torch
#17: Metal Stock
• Pieces of metals that we will use in this class• Various sizes and types• MAKE SURE you know what metal you are
using!
#18: Material Room
• This room is for TEACHERS ONLY• DO NOT ENTER• Material is kept in this room• If you need material, ask a teacher
#19: Filler Metals
• Metal added in the making of a joint through welding, brazing, or soldering.
• This area is where we would work with the metals (we do not use many filler metals n the course) (already on welding material – flux)
#20: Torch Cutting Area• Area for cutting metal with an Oxy-Acetylene
Torch• Place metal on grate – MAKE SURE METAL
BEING CUT ISNT ON A GRATE• Grate is removable to retrieve pieces
#21: Metal Disposal
• Metal should not be thrown out in regular garbage
• Look for metal trash can with “metal” on the top
• Throw out scrap pieces (check with teacher if not sure)
#22: Project Baskets
• Put projects in basket after each class (your name will be stamped
• Will be safely locked away• Will be locked up after every class and at end of day
#23: Eye wash station
• Next to door by WHMIS • Any metal, sparks, or debris in eye =USE• Flushes out eye so debris does less damage to
eye
#24: Welding Shield
• Used to protect others from sparks, debris and flash
• Should always be used in shop
#25: Mitre Saw
• Saw used for cutting metal to desired lengths • DO NOT use until trained and with proper
supervision
#26: Welders Chipping Hammer
• Used after SMAW welding to get rid of covering over the weld
• Lightly chip at weld and the brush away with brush
#27: Wire Brush
• Used after chipping hammer to get rid of debris
• Does not hold metal shards• Does not damage metal
