A note from Lorri………

Dear Shooting Stars,

October is a great month to zoom towards success. For one, it's

Customer Service month. What will you do this month to make

sure your business is set up to give the very best customer ser-

vice you can?

Not only is this customer service month, it’s also domestic vio-

lence awareness month. As you know, this was a cause near

and dear to Mary Kay’s heart, which is why it’s one of the main

focuses of the Mary Kay Foundation. I encourage you to do

your part. Whether that’s sharing about our foundation at each

skin care class or encouraging customers to round up their or-

der a few dollars and donating those proceeds to the foundation,

there are so many great ways to get involved. We can all do our

part.

Now that we’re all thinking about the holiday season, I want to

encourage you to take a moment at the beginning or end of

each day and measure your success. So often we run from fire

to fire this time of year and instead we need to focus. Begin

each day focused on the result you want from that day and what

behaviors will take you there. Some days will be simpler than

others, and a lot of days you may find ways to sneak your busi-

ness in at perfect times. Can you deliver product to your chil-

dren’s sports games? How about making phone calls while

waiting to pick them up? In today’s high-tech world we can re-

spond to emails while standing in line. This is one great option,

but so is putting your phone down and warm chatting with the

woman waiting next do you. I know that if you have a few key

things you’re focusing on each day, you can figure out what key

behaviors will get you the best results. Make sure to just focus

on what is within your control, not the response, and you’ll have

the best success. For example: how many calls you want to

make, classes to book, etc. as your goal. That way you don’t

stop calling until you get the results you’re looking for rather

than being frustrated by customers who can’t book today.

I know we are going to have an incredible month. Our new

products are fabulous. We've gotten a lot of great momentum

from last month's sharing promotion, and I just know a lot of our

unit is going to "Fall Into Red" this month! Will you join us by

working your business and making this your best holiday season

ever? You can make any dream come true that you truly desire

and are willing to do the work to fulfill! Let's make it happen!

Love and Belief,

Lorri

Care For Your Customers

Denise Kucharski, Independent Future Executive Senior Sales

Director of Fordland, MO, has three important tips for building customer

relationships. Number 1: Consistency of contact. Mary Kay taught us that we should have our name in front of our customers every four weeks. I believe the Preferred Customer Program can help you achieve that. In addition to mailers, I personally contact my customers every six weeks, Denise says. Number 2: Be aware that you are competing with department stores, she advises. Make your products cute and appealing, like department stores do. And provide regular service so customers won’t be tempted to pick something up while they’re out. Number 3: Chitchat is important. I always find time to ask my customers about their jobs and their families. I want them to know that I’m interested in their lives, not just their money. Denise often makes notes about her customers’ personal lives on their customer profiles. If it’s something major like a death in the family or a promotion, Denise sends a card. Before Seminar, I went through my customer file and discovered that out of 200 customers, 77 have been with me for over 10 years! And 32 customers have been with me for over 20 years! I think that says a lot about customer loyalty.

Rewarding Customers

People love to receive gifts and know they're appreciated. By offering your customers a little extra, you're letting them know how much you care and how much you

appreciate them for their loyalty, says Independent Executive Senior Sales Director, Sylvia Boggs, of Charlotte, N.C. I adore my customers! She lets them know it by treating them to special gifts like samplers and Trend Look Cards. When you nurture your customer relationships, your customers become close, almost like family. Plus, when you treat your customers well, they'll take care of you. Sylvia says a fun way she's found to grow her business is by asking her best customers to host a class or party using The Look. This gives them a special incentive to get their friends together for a fun event. And I reward my hostesses for their efforts by giving a gift and a big thanks in front of their friends. These are just a few of the ways a little extra can create excitement and strengthen customer loyalty. And with the BizBuilders program, you can earn free products that could be used to build those lasting customer relationships for life.

On The Grow Looking for a great way to grow your business? Independent Future Executive Senior Sales Director Lisa Anne Harmon of Venetia, PA, recommends customer referrals. Referrals are so important, Lisa Anne states. I know that when my customers trust me, they're happy to refer family and friends who would enjoy the great products and services I offer. Lisa Anne considers a referral a great compliment and offers several tips on how to encourage them. I look for opportunities to ask for referrals, like any time a customer comments on how great a product is. That's when I'll ask if she knows someone who would also like the product. You can also customize referral

questions. For example, in the winter, I might ask customers if they know anyone with dry skin who would like to experience some great moisturizers. Holidays are a great time to ask if they know someone who would like a new glamour look. Then in May, I ask customers if they know anyone who is planning a wedding and wants a makeover. Being specific about the great products and services you offer can really help you build your skills in getting referrals.

Making the Personal

Connection Independent National Sales Director, Diana Sumpter of Dickson, TN, knows the importance of developing friendships with her customers. It's what helps her and other Independent Beauty Consultants go from making a one-time sale to building loyal customers for the life of their businesses. Diana has built her business on this belief and shares her insight, plus a few great tips on how she uses the personal touch to build great relationships with her customers. “I believe what separates Mary Kay from any other brand is not only a first-rate product but first-rate personal service. We need to go the extra mile - like enclosing a package of dry chicken soup mix in a get-well card to a customer who's not feeling well. I also like to send congratulations cards to customers and their families when they experience promotions or celebrations. Birthday cards and calls from me let them know we appreciate them as people and not just as customers." "Mary Kay Ash taught us that if we treat each customer with the utmost care - like she's wearing a sign that says 'Make me feel important' - then we will have a customer for life.” Articles included are from previous copies of the Applause Magazine.

“The potential income, growth opportunity, and guaranteed

paycheck is there for EVERYBODY who wants it,

works for it, believes it, and grows into it.”

I've been hearing lately from current consultants and potential recruits that they need a 'guaranteed' paycheck. I understand and I agree. When I first started my MK business, I NEEDED a 'guaranteed' salary. I was earning $60,000+ and had monthly bills that went along with that kind of an income. In fact, I joined MK because of the money potential. I had to keep working my 60-80 hours a week schedule because I needed my 'guaranteed' salary. In my first two months in MK, I made all the excuses not to do my MK business. "It's been a long 12-hour day, I'm too tired… I don't want to get on the phone tonight, I've been on the phone all day.. They won't book with me anyway... I don't wear makeup... I don't like to sell... I don't like women.... I don't know anybody; I just moved here... I can't talk to strangers.... Those scripts don't sound like me...... I don't have time to do a weekly plan sheet or my six most important things to do list".... etc., etc., etc.

In fact, I complained to my director, Janet, "This MK thing is just not working. I am so tired of working my MK business and nothing is happening, I can't believe I even joined this company."

The truth was that I was 'THINKING' about my MK career all the time because of its hope, promise, and potential. I wanted to live the life of a National Sales Director. If they could do it, so could I. The problem is: I was thinking about MK all the time; I was not WORKING my business, not WORKING the IPA's (Income Producing Activities). I was just thinking about them.

In your current job, if you just thought about working, but didn't show up to work, would you get your guaranteed paycheck?

What if you didn’t do the job requirements they told you to do? You see, you ARE disciplined enough every day to get up, rush the kids to day care /school, go to work (whether you feel like it or not), fight rush hour traffic, get to work, and do things that you don't want to do. You go to lunch when they say, fight rush hour traffic on the way home, pick up the kids at day care before 6 pm so you don't get charged extra, rush around to get dinner on the table, do homework, do baths, do housework, etc…, go to bed, just to get up the next morning and do it all over again.

Instead of holding a class or two in the evening (or on weekends), consultants and potential recruits say, "I need to be at home with my kids having quality time since I was gone all day." I understand and agree that quality family time is so important. I encourage you to think long term and big picture. Consider making a short-term sacrifice for long-term gain. If you keep doing what you have always done, you will always have what you currently have. Will your monthly guaranteed paycheck be over $10,000 a month? With your MK career it could!!!!

Consider many of our NSDs’ monthly checks! Something else you may want to take into account: Your current 'guaranteed paycheck’ may not be guaranteed in this current economic situation. We all know people who are losing good jobs they have had a long time because so many companies are struggling.

The potential income, growth opportunity, and guaranteed paycheck is there for EVERYBODY who wants it, works for it, believes it, and grows into it. All you have to do is DECIDE!! Decide to really WORK your business DAILY, treat it like a J-O-B. DISCIPLINE yourself to WORK your business whether you feel like it or not. Practice and develop your booking, selling, and sharing skills. Choose to follow the law of averages. Book two classes to hold one. Hold five interviews to sponsor one new team member. Work your business like a business. You must also decide to discipline yourself to grow personally. Stop making excuses, stop complaining, and stop blaming. (I know from personal experience). When I decided to treat my MK as a business, as a job, to put it into my schedule, to work MK whether I felt like it or not, I won a car in 3 months and became a director 2 months later. My first director check was $3000+ and it has never fallen below that. In fact, it has increased to $7000-$15,000+ monthly... GUARANTEED MK income.

You can have a guaranteed MK income too. It is all about choices and work habits. You’ll find that with that guaranteed Mary Kay income, many other rewards follow. Mary Kay’s mission is to empower women. By offering good customer service, a quality product, and sharing the opportunity with those who need it, we are able to profit financially, emotionally, and in so many other ways. What do you want out of life? What do you want to be remembered for? Do you want to make a significant difference in MANY lives? DREAM BIG, WORK BIG, PRAY BIG, BELIEVE BIG!!! Make these next 4 weeks the BEST 4 weeks of your MK career. Do more, be more (personally growing, and growing in your relationship with God), and receive more!!!

“I was thinking about MK all the time; I was not WORKING my business…”

Words of Wisdom by Mary Kay Ash

The world is full of competent people who honestly intend to do

things tomorrow or as soon as they can get around to it.

Accomplishments, however, seldom match those of less

talented people who are blessed with a sense of the importance of

getting started now.

A Great Lesson on Rejection from Ann Vertel I remember the first time I was allowed to go out trick-or-treating on Halloween night with just my friends. (Of course, I'm sure my dad was following along at a safe distance, but he'll neither confirm nor deny that accusation!) Our mission was a singular one - get as much candy as possible in the shortest amount of time. In other words, I wanted my big plastic orange pumpkin overflowing with goodies. We literally ran from house to house as we scoured our neighborhood intent upon our goal. On occasion, we approached a house, rang the bell, and nothing happened. The lights were on but no one answered the door. Put in that situation, what do most kids do? They move on to the next house. "Come on, let's go," and they're headed down the block. They don't stop for a second to wonder why the owners didn't answer the door. They don't take it personally. They don't think that they're wearing the wrong costume. They don't walk around the house peering in the window trying to see why the owners

didn't answer the doorbell. They don't sit down on the front step and pout. And can you even imagine that they would just quit and go home? No way. You see, kids are neat people to observe with regard to how they handle rejection. It just never occurs to them that the rejection is about them! And why? Because it's not. Kids have a unique ability to observe the world just the way it is. As we grow up, our self-esteem takes a few hits, and we start to think that everything that happens to us is about us. It's not. When you hear “No, no thanks, I'm not interested, it's not for me, I don't like selling, please don't ever, ever, ever, ever, ever call me again for any reason whatsoever”....it is about them, not you, and not the opportunity you have to offer. Run to the next house, and the next one, and the next one. That's where the candy is. Remember, your goal is a full plastic pumpkin, and you don't care which houses or how many houses it takes to make that happen.
