David Chapman

Athlete Biography

Pistol shooter David Chapman will line up at his third Olympic Games in Rio having also competed

at Sydney 2000 and London 2012. He won Australia’s Rio 2016 quota at the Oceania Championships

after shooting the minimum quali丿cation score and then claiming the bronze medal at the event.

Chapman competed at his 丿rst World Cup events in 1985 before giving up the competitive side of

the sport for over a decade after getting married. His return to the sport was well warranted when

he lined up at his home Olympic Games in 2000 where he 丿nished 20th in the 25m rapid pistol.

He made the 2006 Commonwealth Games Team where he won a silver medal in the 25m rapid air

pistol pairs event alongside Bruce Favell. Four years later in Delhi he won bronze in the same event

with Bruce Quick.

Chapman and his daughter Hayley made history at the London 2012 Games when they became the

丿rst father-daughter duo to compete for Australia at an Olympic Games.

He was Commonwealth Games Champion when he won the rapid 丿re event and set a new Games

record (23) in the 丿nal at the Glasgow 2014 Games. Consistent results throughout 2015 and the

start of 2016 saw him win selection for the 丿rst Games on South American soil in August.

Mitchell Iles

Athlete Biography

At just 17 years and 133 days trap shooter Mitchell Iles will become Australia’s second youngest

ever shooting athlete to compete at an Olympic Games. Only Rio 2016 teammate Aislin Jones will

be younger.

Iles 䇧rst started shooting when he was 12 after his grandfather and he followed his grandfather,

Australian shooting legend Bill, into the sport. He went on to compete at his 䇧rst Australian

Championships in early 2015 where he won the junior event after just four months in the trap

discipline.

At his 䇧rst Junior World Championships in 2015 Iles shot a quali䇧cation score of 114/125 to reach

the 䇧nal and eventually 䇧nish 䇧fth in Lonato, Italy.

Since November, Iles has hit two world class quali䇧cation scores of 122/125 and one of 121/125 to

prove he can match it with the best trap shooting has to o㼫㈯er.

He highlighted his unique talent when he won the 2014 ZZ World Championship (simulated pigeon

shooting) having not participated in it before. Although he wasn’t overly keen on competing in the

event, his grandfather Bill encouraged him to and went on to become the youngest ever winner of

the event.

Aislin Jones

Athlete Biography

In Rio, Aislin Jones will become Australia’s youngest shooting athlete to ever compete at an

Olympic Games. Jones will be 16 years and 179 days when the Rio 2016 Games commence, seeing

her surpass the previous youngest in Anne Marie Forder who was 18 years old when she competed

in the 1996 Olympic Games. (She then proceeded to 2000 where she won a bronze medal in

women’s air pistol.)

After showing initial potential in simulated 䘀쐂eld shooting, Jones switched to skeet shooting in

2012 after encouragement from, and coaching by, Lauryn Mark, who 䘀쐂nished fourth in Women's

Skeet at the 2004 Athens Games.

Jones competed at her 䘀쐂rst international events in 2015. She debuted internationally by taking on

the best juniors in the world in the ISSF Junior Cup. She immediately highlighted her talent on the

range, shooting 69/75 to narrowly miss being top quali䘀쐂er and 䘀쐂nished sixth having achieved her

Olympic Minimum Qualifying Score. She went on to place 23rd at the 2015 Junior World

Championships in Lonato, Italy. She rounded out the year as top quali䘀쐂er into the 䘀쐂nals at the

Oceania Championships equaling the Oceania Region ISSF Women's Skeet record of 71/75 while

setting a new Oceania Junior Women’s Skeet record.

In January 2016, Jones became the youngest woman to win the Australian National Skeet

Championship at 15, just 12 months after her national debut. Soon after she headed to Qatar

where she quali䘀쐂ed fourth and 䘀쐂nished eighth overall in the 2016 Qatar Open.

Jones learned to shoot at moving targets in a quarry with her Dad winding cans along the ground

on a 䘀쐂shing line when she 䘀쐂rst started shooting with a 20 gauge shotgun.

Warren Potent

Athlete Biography

Olympic bronze medallist and 2014 World Champion Warren Potent will make his 饁fth straight

appearance at an Olympic Games in Rio having 饁rst taken up the sport as a 16-year-old in 1978. The

ri✈震e shooter competed at his 饁rst National Championships in 1980 and went on to win the 50m

prone teams event at the 1986 World Championships in East Germany.

After just missing out on selection for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, and then taking a break

from 1990-97, Potent made his debut Olympic appearance just down the road from where he grew

up in Sydney’s west. He 饁nished 19th in the 50m prone event before claiming 42nd four years later

at the Athens 2004 Games.

Heading into the Beijing 2008 Games Potent equalled the world record mark of 704.8 across

elimination and 饁nal rounds to highlight his credentials as a medal contender and shooting his

third Games Potent didn’t disappoint. He shot a quali饁cation score of 595, four points o汇꺈 the lead,

before shooting the highest score in the 饁nal to move from fourth to third to claim the bronze

medal.

A silver and bronze medal followed in the 50m prone individual and pairs event at the 2010

Commonwealth Games in the same year he again shot a perfect 600 quali饁cation score. Potent

went on to compete at his fourth Games in London but couldn’t match his Beijing heroics 饁nishing

32nd in 2012.

Potent became Australia’s FIRST ri✈震e shooting world champion in 2014 when he claimed victory in

Granada, Spain. The result saw him secure Australia’s 饁rst quota in the sport for the Rio Olympics

before strong performances in the selection events ensured he would again wear the green and

gold on the Olympic stage. A silver medal at the World Cup event in Bangkok in early 2016 proves

he still has the form to stand on another Olympic podium.

Daniel Repacholi

Athlete Biography

The big man of Australian shooting, Daniel Repacholi will hit the range in Rio for his fourth Olympic

Games. Standing at 202cm tall, he helped Australia win one of the three men’s pistol quotas

available after claiming the 50m pistol title at the 2015 Oceania Championships. The gold in Sydney

was his seventh continental title with his ††rst coming 14 years earlier in 2001.

He burst onto the scene when he claimed each of the junior national pistol records in 2000. Four

years later he made his Olympic debut at Athens 2004 when he ††nished 36th in the 10m air pistol

and 23rd in the 50m air pistol events. International success wasn’t far away when he went on to win

gold alongside David Moore at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the 50m pistol pairs and bronze

in the 10m pistol pairs.

Repacholi then lined up for the Australian Team at the Beijing 2008 Games where he ††nished 31st

and 40th in the 10m and 50m pistol events. Two years on he secured his ††rst Commonwealth

Games individual medal when he won bronze in the 10m air pistol in Delhi.

A consistent run of form throughout 2011 and the start of 2012 saw him secure selection to his

third Olympic team for the London 2012 Games. He secured his best results to date at an Olympic

Games ††nishing 19th in the 50m air pistol and 28th in the 10m air pistol.

Repacholi won individual gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 10m air pistol while also

securing bronze in the 50m air pistol. He claimed both events at the Australia Cup 1 and 2 events in

early 2016 to have him in strong form leading as Rio draws closer.

Athlete Biography

Jack Rossiter will become one of Australia’s youngest ever shooters to compete at the Olympic

He broke onto the scene when he claimed both the junior and senior 10m air riꇎe titles at the 2013

Dane Sampson

Athlete Biography

Having cemented his position in recent years as one of the nation’s leading ri᠘㸾e shooters, Dane

Sampson will line up at his second Olympic Games in Rio.

Sampson followed in his parents footsteps when he took up shooting at the age of 12. Long having

dreamed of representing Australia at the Olympics, he made his Games debut in London where he

㜷㜷nished 37th in the 50m ri᠘㸾e 3 position, 48th in the 50m ri᠘㸾e prone, 42nd in the 10m air ri᠘㸾e.

The Queenslander competed at his 㜷㜷rst Commonwealth Games in 2014 where he made the 㜷㜷nals in

each of the three ri᠘㸾e events. His best result came in the 50m ri᠘㸾e prone where he placed fourth as

teammate Warren Potent won the gold.

Sampson secured Australia’s quota in the ri᠘㸾e 3 position competition after winning the Oceania

Championships in late 2015. In a strong showing he also claimed the 50m ri᠘㸾e prone event at the

site of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

He started 2016 positive results on the international circuit scoring two top-20 performances at

the 2016 Pilzen Grand Prix before narrowly missing the 㜷㜷nal of the 50m ri᠘㸾e prone at the World

Cup event in Bangkok.

Catherine Skinner

Athlete Biography

Having taken up the sport when she was 12, Catherine Skinner will get the chance to wear the

green and gold at an Olympic Games in Rio after establishing herself as one of the world’s leading

trap shooters in recent years.

She began shooting in 2006 and competed in her 耀rst junior World Cup event soon after. She broke

through to win a junior World Cup silver medal at the Munich event in 2010 and progressed onto

the senior World Cup circuit a year later.

Skinner claimed Australia’s only shooting medal at the 2013 Summer Universiade when she won

trap gold in Kazan, Russia. In what was an impressive year for the Victorian, Skinner also won two

silver medals at World Cup events in Nicosia, Greece and Al Ain, UAE. She would return at the 2015

Summer Universiade as the Australian 耀ag bearer to win bronze.

She continued her strong form throughout 2014 to see her 耀nish with bronze at World Cup events

in Granada and Tucson setting her up for a big World Championships in Gabala. Skinner quali耀ed

through to the 耀nal shooting 72/75 and despite narrowly missing the gold medal match she went

on to claim bronze and secure Australia a quota for Rio 2016 in the event.

The year also saw Skinner make her Commonwealth Games debut at Glasgow 2014. After

qualifying for the semi-耀nals as the highest ranked shooter she just missed the bronze medal

match in a shoot-o耀. Teammate, both in Glasgow and now at Rio 2016, Laetisha Scanlan went on to

win gold.

Adam Vella

Athlete Biography

Olympic bronze medallist, World Champion and multiple Commonwealth Games Champion – Adam

Vella has just about done it all in trap shooting. Born and raised in Melbourne, Vella took up the

sport when he was 13 and has since become one of the nation’s most decorated shooters.

Teaming up with fellow Australian shooting royalty in Michael Diamond and Russell Mark, the trio

won the trap teams event at the 1999 World Championships. He went on to win gold with Diamond

in the pairs event and silver in the individual event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games before

defending his pairs gold four years later in Delhi. Vella secured individual trap gold at the 2014

Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

He was ranked as the world’s top trap shooter in 2003, a feat he also achieved in 2007, and went

into the Athens 2004 Games as one of the medal favourites. Having qualiꌄ輚ed in equal fourth with a

score of 121-125, he shot 24/25 in the ꌄ輚nal to secure a place on the Olympic podium.

Having missed out on competing at the Beijing 2008 Games by a single target, Vella returned to

Olympic competition in 2012 in London where he shot 119/125 to miss the ꌄ輚nal by three targets.

He qualiꌄ輚ed Australia’s quota for the sport at the 2015 Oceania Championships in Sydney and after

a strong build-up to Rio will compete at his fourth Olympic Games in the green and gold.

When he is not competing Vella runs his own shooting range that o䈐䓒ers recreational shooters to

try out and potentially take up the sport. Along with Vella, fellow Rio 2016 athlete Laetisha Scanlan

is one of the Oz Shooting instructors.

James Willett

Athlete Biography

At just 20 years of age, James Willet has enjoyed a rapid rise in the sport. While he began shooting

when he was 12, he only began the double trap discipline at the beginning of 2015 and has

upstaged many of his more fancied rivals around the world during his opening year in the sport.

Having to commute over three hours to Werribee to train, Willett and his father Arthur built a

shooting range at their farm in Corowa near the NSW/VIC border.

Willett showed his potential to match it with the world’s best when he set a Junior World Record in

qualifying with 142/150 targets at his ††rst ever World Cup event. He then shot 23/30 targets to

narrowly miss out on the bronze medal match.

He went on to compete at his ††rst World Championships in the sport in 2015 opting to compete in

the senior event despite still being a junior. Willett quali††ed for the ††nal in equal third with a score

of 139/150. Willett then quali††ed for the bronze medal match where he lined up against Kuwait’s

Ahmad Alafasi. Both shooters shot 24/30 before Alafasi won the shoot-oဠ†.

He won the double trap quota for Australia at the Oceania Championships when he shot 135/150 in

qualifying before going 28/30 and 29/30 before claiming his ††rst World Cup victory when he won

the Rio 2016 test event.

Lalita Yauhleuskaya

Athlete Biography

Pistol shooter Lalita Yauleuskaya will make her sixth Olympic Games appearance (fourth for

Australia) at Rio 2016. The former Belarussian pistol shooter automatically quali††ed for Rio after

winning one of the selection events in a benchmark score. Her quali††cation score of 585 would put

her well in contention for a medal in Rio.

Making her Olympic debut in 1996 for Belarus, she won a bronze medal in the 25m air pistol at the

Sydney 2000 Games. Becoming an Australian citizen in 2001, she represented Australia at Athens

2004 where she claimed 21st and 10th in the 10m and 25m air pistol events. Four years later in

Beijing she claimed 14th and 18th in the same events.

She secured silver for her adopted country at the 2010 World Championship before making her

††fth Games appearance in London where she ††nished 40th (10m) and 17th (25m).

Yauleuskaya made her ††rst Commonwealth Games appearance in 2002 where she won three gold

medals for Australia. In total she has won seven gold, a silver and two bronze medals at Manchester

2002, Melbourne 2006, Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014.
