Dear Fellow Lions, Leos and Lionesses,
I would like to thank you for your participation in our District’s annual Conference on April 20, and 21st. We have set an all time record of having 417 registrants. This shows me that you are excited with our District’s progress and the Lions spirit is alive and well.
Please accept a special thanks to all the Lions and individuals that donated and advertised in our commemorative Spring Conference Program book. Your financial contribution enables us to put on a conference of this size by subsidizing the expense and making it affordable for the attendees.
130 attendees joined the ‘Definitely Diva’ opening night. The music they played appealed to all. This year we made sure that there were lots of party snacks for Lions who came directly from work. We definitely achieved fun and fellowship.
Our panels were well attended. The subject matter was relevant to our Lions communication and activities today. PID Patti Hill enjoyed meeting our Lions and felt that this year’s support for our District Governor has opened the door for many of our younger Lions to take an interest in higher office.
The Lions supported the amendment to the District Constitution & By-Laws by a large majority to include definite guidelines on governance and requirements of all future District projects. District officers’ election has been completed and Lions Clubs International has been notified.
We have had many positive comments from our ‘Medal of Merit’ presentation to the heroes that rescued the passengers from the fateful flight 204 that took place in October 2011 in Richmond BC.
We have accomplished all of goals that we initially set out to achieve and have even excelled from our best expectation for this year.
I would like to give special thanks to CC Hal Palmer for addressing our District at the STARS banquet and mentioned that we are the top District within Multiple District 19 this year. He mentioned that there is still time to shoot for more stars and complemented all of us for a very successful year.

Zone Chairperson Lion Andy Stalker was awarded Lions Clubs International Presidential Medal by District Governor Linda Wong at the Star Banquet.
Zone Chairperson Lion Teresina Lau was awarded Lions Clubs International Leadership Medal by PID Patti Hill at the District Luncheon.
This Leadership Medal is presented to those Lions who have made a significant leadership contribution during his/her year in office.

RESULT on the Proposed Amendments to be voted at the Spring Conference on April 21st, 2012
Re: Proposed Governance & Requirements of a District 19A Project: Any organization applying to Lions Clubs International District 19A (District 19A) for any kind of endorsement(s) must comply with the following requirements as conditions precedent- 1. To submit to District 19A three most recent years of its financial statements audited or most
recently submitted to BC Government authorities. 2. (A) To submit to District 19A it’s most recent progress reports for three years.
(B) To submit a complete list of its appointed or elected officers, their positions and a list of all members on record.
3. To submit a list of donations received from Lions Clubs, Lions and Non-Lions during the last 12 months.
4. To submit a full disclosure of any money or remunerations received (for whatever reasons) by its agent or officer who is a Lion/Lioness/Leo and/or any officer or member of the applicant organization.
5. The applicant organization, in its application, must not propose to use the name of District 19A so that the public would not perceive it as a part of District 19A.
6. To submit to District 19A the applicant organization’s constitution and by-laws. 7. To submit adequate indemnity insurance to save District 19A harmless from any and all
liabilities. 8. To sent its authorized representative to report its financial and progress reports to the District 19A
Cabinet, three times each year and to file its written reports to the Cabinet Secretary of District 19A. 9. Any applicant organization which has met the above-mentioned requirements would receive
appropriate consideration by the District 19A Cabinet for possible approval at a subsequent Cabinet meeting.
Congratulations to Leo Julie Lym Vancouver West Leo Lions Club being selected as the recipient of the Leo of the Year Service Award. The Service Awards recognize outstanding achievements by Lions and Leos who exemplify the true belief in service. She is invited to join the Lions at the Service Awards ceremony, which will take place during the Second Plenary Session of the 2012 Lions Clubs International Convention in Busan, Korea on the morning of Monday, June 25. At the ceremony, all finalists will be recognized and the winner will be announced. If you register for the convention and attend the ceremony, a stipend of US$300 will be sent to Leo Julie following the international convention.

Bullying is the biggest problem in our schools. This is the reason why I instigated an Essay Writing Contest among the Leo Clubs in Vancouver and Burnaby with the first prize money of $1500. The topic is "I believe that bullying can be eliminated in our schools." The winner is Grace Zhao of Vancouver West Leo Club who is a grade eleven student at Magee Secondary. ~ Lion Paul Wong, Honorary member of Vancouver Granville Lions Club
I believe bullying can be eliminated in our schools. "Courage is fire, and bullying is smoke" ‐ Benjamin Disraeli There will always be someone out there that will try to bring one down, whether it's because of jealousy or plain dislike. From pre‐school name calling to high school violent fights, bullying has been getting out of control and needs to stop. Bullying affects the live of many students, and could even result in self inflected accidents. Society relies on us in order to make a difference and act as role models for the future generation to come. Bullying can be eliminated by starting with ourselves. What we allow ourselves to do, which may not always be the best choice, is what we promote. Treating others the way you want to be treated is the first step one should take to eliminate bullying, or at least reducing the chances of being bullied. Build your character to the person who you want to be. By being a bystander, one actually promotes and allow the bullying to occur. The best solution when someone is being bullied is to tell an adult. There is no better way to help a resolve conflict than telling someone older with more experience and getting them to help. We should also take the initiative to spread awareness of the harm it can do to students. One does not know the difference they can make in the school or community. Another huge factor is have courage. When you are strong and courageous, bullies would not want to target you. Being weak only makes them think you are an easy target. Being brave and courageous is just one of the many ways that could help to eliminate bullying. When one spends time with friends, bullies are less likely to pick on tem when they are surrounded by supporters. Bullies have weaknesses too. They are usually vulnerable people who lack the love we have in our lives. Their true self is hidden underneath that exterior thick armor that comes off as being tough and powerful. Don't be afraid of bullies. Instead stand up to bulling. In the school environment, the teachers and staff are the role models. If a teacher acts abusive and aggressive, students will only think it is alright to do the same. Bullies like to bully because they believe that they have the support of others and that their behavior makes them popular. When teachers don't intervene, the bullies will continue with their bad behavior. There should be special programs implemented into the school so teachers can take actions when bullying occurs. Better yet, I believe that with more students against bullying, they can help prevent it from starting in the first place. With enough advocates and students who are willing to take the lead, bullying can be eliminated in our schools. The bottom line is, don't be intimidated by a bully. They are humans with feelings too, and like a hard‐boiled egg they have a soft center. Be assertive when necessary and don't be afraid to stand up to a bully. Like Robert Kiyosaki once said, "Toughness is not being a bully. It is having a backbone."
