Year 2 Taskworks Camp
Our Year 2 students and teachers leave tonight for their overnight camp at Taskworks. The purpose
of the Taskworks Camp is to provide safe and challenging activities that help students work in a team
environment and require students to use higher order thinking through a range of different
activities. For many, this will be their first camp experience, which is very exciting for all involved!
We know that our students will have a fabulous time and we look forward to hearing about their
experiences on their return to BNPS tomorrow (Friday) at approximately 3:00pm.
2017 Victorian State Schools Spectacular!
We are proud and excited to have our Balwyn North Primary School students participating in the
mass dance and choir sections of the 2017 Victorian State Schools Spectacular: ‘Anything is Possi-
ble!’ A special congratulations goes to Alexander MacRae who will perform in the main choir in the
show.
This year's Spectacular will be held at Hisense Arena on Saturday 16th September, with two shows at
1:00pm and 6:30pm. The three-hour Spectacular will be filmed for broadcast by Channel 7. We will
let you know when we receive further details. We wish our hardworking students and teachers all
the best for the show!
Whole School Transition
On Monday, students of BNPS were involved in a whole school transition session. The
purpose of this session was to introduce students to a new classroom environment and teacher.
Teachers provided activities that were engaging and fun, but also gave the students a sense of what
will be expected of them in their new year level. It was the students’ first taste of what school will be
like for them in 2018, with more sessions planned for Term 4, culminating in the final session where
students will meet their class teacher and classmates for 2018.
Swimming Program
As you would be aware, the BNPS Swimming Program will once again take place in week 3 and 4 of
Term 4. Prep to Year 2 students will be using the Kew Recreation Centre and our students in Year 3-6
will be swimming at Watermarc in Greensborough. This program is an integral part of the school
curriculum and all students are encouraged to take part. There are numerous benefits from an
intensive program for both students who do or do not regularly attend swimming lessons or squad
training. Our students in Year 5 and 6 will have a particular focus on a fitness and aquatic program.
We thank you for your support of this important program.

Principal for a Day
‘Principal for a Day’ gives a wide range of community and business leaders from all walks of life a first-hand experience of a
normal day in a Victorian government school. Over 150 business and community leaders took part in the day this year. Tim
Smith, Victorian Member of Parliament, representing the local seat of Kew, attended our school on Friday the 8th of
September. It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange a range of insights with Tim on the day.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER
District Athletics
As you know, last week a team of students went to represent our school in the North
Balwyn District Athletics. Out of those students, three were able to finish in the top
two in their event(s), thus making it to the next level: division.
Good luck to all of those students going to division!
Results will be posted as soon as possible.
Chess Tournament
Today, a group of our most talented chess players went to compete in an inter-school
chess tournament at
Bialek College! We're sure that they'll all do extremely well and we will post how they
went next week!
State Badminton Tournament
On Tuesday, six students travelled all the way to Altona to compete in a state badmin-
ton tournament. Each student played eight games against schools like Serpell, Mount
View, Doncaster and Glendal in division one. Overall, we placed fifth in our division,
and fifth overall.
A great job done by that team of students, congratulations!
From your School Captains,
Ryan, Catherine, Michael and Emma.
Today’s Chess Tournament
Today, 11 eager students played in a chess tournament at Bialik College. The competition was particularly fierce, with several very strong schools competing. With Chess Captain Callista Leong-La at the VSSS dance rehearsal, all of our players needed to lift their games to make up for her absence.
They did!
Sean Hawkins finished the day undefeated, with 6 wins and a draw from the 7 games played.
James Deng and Zhi Lin both managed 5.5 games and David Wang, Elizabeth Ngodinhson,
Julia Hawkins and Kovida De Silva all won 5 games each. Clare Zhu, Oliver Chen, Ryan Ngo
and Harold Moon completed our team with commendable performances against strong opponents.
Sean Hawkins received the trophy for equal best score in the tournament and Elizabeth and Julia were named equal best girls on the day. These wonderful scores gave our team 2nd place overall, in a very difficult tournament.
Congratulations to each member of the team. Your determination, perseverance and dedication to the game has made us all very proud!
