Once again congratulations to one and all for being one of the
few Universities in India to be certified ISO 9001:2008 by the
International Standards Certifications Private Limited,
Australia. Earlier the quality management system of Shobhit
University was ISO 9001:2000 certified. The certification
indeed distinguishes Shobhit University from all other Indian
Universities. A Seminar on Recent Applications of Robotics &
Embedded C organized by the School of Biomedical
Engineering and Robosapiens on August, 28, 2010 was a
delight for both the students and faculty. Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra, Hon’ble Pro Chancellor, who
inaugurated the workshop and all the invited participants were visibly impressed with the University
students demo of the soldier robo, garbage collector robo, line follower robots and other technical
marvels. It has been decided to set up a Robo Lab and have a core group of developers to design and
develop a moon rover robo prototype that will be offered to the Chandrayan II Team at ISRO. My best
wishes to them. Shobhit University is one of the first University in the region to become an NKN node
for futuristic e libraries, virtual classrooms and global database connectivity through the National
Knowledge Network, a visionary and futuristic enterprise of Govt of India to usher in knowledge
revolution. My heartiest welcome to the new Shobhitians both the teaching and student fraternity
who bring fresh vigor to our ever growing family!

Shobhit University: First in the region to join the National Knowledge Network
Shobhit University has the proud privilege of being the
first University in the region to join the National
Knowledge Network (NKN). National Knowledge
Network, a high speed information network project for
connecting the knowledge institutions across the
country, is being implemented by a high level committee
constituted by Government of India chaired by Dr. R.
Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government
of India. Dr. Chidambaram conveyed this to Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Anoop Swarup and invited him to a
seminar being organized by NKN. This adds another
feather in Shobhit University’s cap.

Prof. Harcharan Singh Ranu, Senior Scientist and Lead Technologist, Saud University, Riyadh
visited Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME), Shobhit University on August 26, 2010.
Prof. Ranu has been the president of American Orthopaedic Biomechanics Research Institute,
Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Prof. D.V. Rai, Director CBME introduced Prof. Ranu and highlighted his
contributions in area of biomedical engineering.
An accomplished engineer and educator with over 30 years of experience in academia,
government and industry, Prof. Ranu spoke about his Contributions to Biomedical
Engineering. He was the first scientist to calculate Poisson's ratio for cartilage from the dog's
femoral head. Prof. Ranu, discussed the development of “3-Dimensional Foot Print Device”
which is used to measure the plantar foot pressure for normal subjects and diabetic patients
with neurotrophic ulcers. This device has been helpful in reducing ulceration and amputation
significantly in the diabetic population. He highlighted various aspects of diabetic foot
syndrome and the use of memory biomaterials for special shoe insoles, such as gel bubble, to
prevent high forefoot pressures. Prof. Ranu also spoke on the development of laserectomy
technique used to relieve low back pain for herniated human spinal disc. This technique works
on Ranu’s principle which states that a small reduction in volume of the nucleus by laser
ablation results in an exponential drop in intradiscal pressure in the nucleus. He apprised the
audience about a technique to simulate 3-Dimensional Micro-fracture in different sports, e.g.,
Hockey Players, Gymnasts etc., and 3-Dimensional surgical simulations of spine.
Prof. Harcharan Singh Ranu, is Senior
Scientist and Lead Technologist at Saud
University, Riyadh.
Prof. Ranu has been Consultant for the
American Orthopaedic Biomechanics
Research Institute and a Visiting Research
Scientist at the Rizzoli Orthopaedics
Institute, Italy. He has been a Professor
and Director of Doctoral Program at Life
University, in Marietta, GA and previously,
Professor & Chair of the Dept. of
Biomechanics at New York College of
Osteopathic Medicine. Prof. Ranu
received his Doctoral degree from the
University of Westminster & the Middlesex
Hospital Medical School, London, England
for his research on the “Effects of Ionizing
Radiation on the Mechanical Properties of
Skin".
Prof. Ranu is also a Visiting Professor at
medical teaching institutions in Argentina,
Australia, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, China,
India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Turkey
and U.K.

The island nation of Mauritius has invited the Shobhit University, Meerut
to set up campus at the Mauritian Capital. This invitation was extended by
a team of education ministry officials headed by minister of tertiary
education, Dr. R. Jeetah during their visit to Indian technical institutes
setting up campuses in Mauritius.
“The aim is to upgrade staff and faculties to make the country more
appealing to international and domestic students for pursuing higher
studies” said the Mauritian education ministry spokesperson.
Shobhit University management is waiting for the HRD ministry’s nod on
the project, which could enhance the two-way flow of students between
the two nations. “There are a number of glitches to be ironed out before
the proposal could take off like the setting up of a mechanism for
equivalence of degrees between the two countries so that smoother
educational exchange is possible.” said Mr. Devinder Narain.

A new smartphone chip prototype under development at the University of
California, San Diego will improve smartphone efficiency by making use of
"dark silicon" the underused transistors in modern microprocessors.
Recently UC San Diego computer scientists presented GreenDroid, the new
smartphone chip prototype at the HotChips symposium in Palo Alto. Dark
silicon refers to the huge swaths of silicon transistors on today's chips that
are underused because there is not enough power to utilize all the
transistors at the same time. The new GreenDroid chip prototype from
computer scientists at UC San Diego will deliver improved performance
through specialized processors fashioned from dark silicon. These
processors are designed to run heavily used chunks of code, called "hot
code," in Google's Android smartphone platform. One example of a conservation core. The small boxes in the image are the pattern of logic gates that are spatially placed over a small portion of the GreenDroid chip.
