which captured the imagination of a large number of microcomputer users. For a time, the

nthusiasm for DTP could be described as being over!optimistic, or even worse. Fortunately, this

phase in the development of systems for DTP has passed and a more realistic approach is now being

taken. DTP, with the appropriate hardware and software, enables documents to be produced at a

"uality approaching those produced professionally. #icrocomputers can be used, but so can other

classes of computer. DTP is only coincidentally connected with Publishing. $t has become clear that

tation. $t has a number of page layout features and competes with leading commercial applications

such as 2dobe Page#aker, Page Plus, =uark>Press or 2dobe $n Design. cribus is designed for

layout, typesetting and to prepare files for professional "uality image setting e"uipment. $t can also

create animated and interactive PDF presentations and forms. Eample uses include writing small

newspapers, brochures, newsletters, posters and books. 2n official cribus manual, published

pretty well. o far, ord and PD+ documents will only be imported as plain teEt. 2lthough cribus

supports Bnicode character encoding, it currently does not properly support compleE script

rendering and so cannot be used with Bnicode teEt for languages written with 2rabic, Hebrew, $ndicand outh ast 2sian writing systems. $n 2ugust 4@34 it was announced that a third party had

developed a system to support compleE $ndic scripts. The 3.: version is eEpected to provide a better

write the native file formats of other DTP programs like =uark>Press, #icrosoft Publisher, or $n

DesignL the developers feel that reverse engineering those file formats would be prohibitively

compleE and could risk legal action from the makers of those programs. onetheless, basic support

for =uark>Press Tag files and $n Design s $D#A, as well as $n 5opy s $5#A formats has been

added to the development branch. Due to licensing issues, the software package does not include

support for the Pantone color matching system (P# ), which is included in some commercial DTP

applications. onetheless, there are legal ways to obtain and incorporate Pantone colors within

cribus. cribus is already being shipped with more than 3@@ color palettes, most of which have

been donated by various commercial color vendors, but also include scientific, national orgovernment color standards.
