    FOREWORD

    Alhamdullilah, with the grace of Allah SWT, Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) has been able to

    publish its very first book, Students Guide Book. With the publication of this StudentsGuide Book, it is

    hoped that students in particular and the public in general will use it as reference .

    It is the preliminary information about the Academic Departments, the programs offered and the units that

    help to further strengthen learning in PTSB. PTSBs desire is to produce first class human capital,

    competent, skillful, creative, innovative, progressive and critical thinkers to meet the needs of the nations

    workforce.

    Indeed, publishing the first edition of this guide book is a starting point to the development of delivery and

    pedagogy in PTSB. Dissemination of information is not only limited to this guide, but students can reach itthrough PTSB website :www.ptsb.edu.my/portal andwww.cidos.edu.my.

    Last but not least, my sincere words of appreciation to those who have been involved in making the

    publication of this Students Guide Booka reality and Insyaallah, all these noble efforts will get blessings

    1.0 Introduction

    Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB), is strategically located on a 100 acre land in Kulim Hi-Tech

    Park (KTPC). It started operations on the 3rd

    of March 2003 and was formerly known as Politeknik Kulim.

    The polytechnic, the second in Kedah Darul Aman, was officiated by His Majesty the Sultan of Kedah,

    Sultan AlMutasimu Billahi Muhibbudin Tuanku AlHaj Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan

    Badlishah on the 27thof March 2007.

    PTSB is an advanced learning institution that effectively serves the educational, cultural and social needs of

    the community and country. Over the years, PTSB has tirelessly endeavored in guiding the younger

    generation towards academic excellence whilst expanding its teaching and learning facilities and

    capabilities.

    Its four academic departments, namely Mechanical Engineering Department, Civil Engineering Department,

    Electrical Engineering Department and Commerce Department, working in collaboration with General

    Studies Department and Mathematics, Science and Computer Department, to ensure that PTSB graduates

    gain an edge over others when they enter the labour market.

    PTSB also aims to be a flexible learner-centered educational institution, providing a conducive learning

    environment in supporting short courses for the community at large and fulfilling its corporate social

    responsibility objectives. With strong commitment from its frontline and support staff, PTSB strives to be the

    best polytechnic in the country. With the ISO 9001:2008 accreditation ensuring quality and consistency of

    the teaching and learning process, and continuous effort to raise the qualification and professionalism of its

    teaching staff, PTSB is well positioned to face future challenges in meeting the needs of industries in the

    Kulim Hi-tech Park, Kedah and Malaysia in general.

    PTSBs most important clients are its students. Throughout their years in PTSB, the students are groomed

    and trained to have necessary technical and life-long learning skills. Opportunities to pursue practical

    education and hands-on learning are provided through the implementation of industrial attachments with the

    aid of qualified experts and professionals. These efforts signify PTSBs commitment to produce quality

    manpower and world class credentials to fulfill the need for semi-skilled workers in the public and private

    sectors in Malaysia.

    4.0 OUTCOME-BASED EDUCATION [OBE]

    Outcome-based education (OBE) is an educational model for students to demonstrate their knowledge andable to perform according to the required outcomes. It is a student-centred approach that focuses onstudents learning. It starts with a clear picture of what students should know, what they should be able todo, and what desirable attitudes and values needed to organize the curriculum, instruction, and assessmentto ensure an ultimate learning (Spady, 1994:1). Thus, OBE involves the restructuring of curriculum andassessment that reflects achievement of high learning order and mastery learning.

    OBE helps students to be aware of what they should learn, aware of what they are learning and the controlover their own learning. It leads to successful student learning and encourages lecturers to be well prepared.It also provides students with appropriate,purposeful learning experiences and opportunities for students todevelop originality, self-motivation and independence while acquiring useful knowledge and skills.

    2.0 CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

    2.1 INTRODUCTION

    Civil Engineering is one of the academic departments in Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah. It started itsoperation in 2003 and previously known as Politeknik Kulim where it offered two programmes at diploma and

    certificate level. They are Civil Engineering course and Land Surveying course.

    Civil engineering is moving forward by offering efficient and professional services in its education based onthe two programmes in order to produce potential graduates who are hardworking, charismatic andprofessional. To realize this, CED has professional, dedicated and experience lecturers and it also hascomplete infrastructures such as classrooms, lecture hall and computer lab which is fully equipped andcomfortable for the students to achieve a successful academic.

    This department is currently led by Mr. Mohamad Kamarudin bin Darus as the Head of Department. He isassisted by 2 Heads of Programme, 57 academic staff and 1 non academic staff. Currently, the number ofstudents is 1118 with an average intake of 180 to 250 students for every semester.

    Objectives:

    Always upgrading the quality of learning and teaching in the related field.

    Producing students who are semi professional in civil engineering and land surveying studies at

    certificate and diploma levels to fulfill the human resource needs in public and private sectors.

    Starting from July 2010 semester, the intake for certificate students has ceased to exist due to the newtransformation of polytechnic to become one of the well known higher learning institutions in Ministry OfHigher Education. Thus, the current programs are restructured and the following is the new programstructure:
